ReiserFS on windows

Recommended Posts

i'm a convert to linux now. i configured the pc at work to be a dual-boot box - windows and ubuntu ultimate edition. there is still windows for my co-workers who still don't want to use linux. since i don't own the machine and it is for all, i only use linux if they don't use the pc.

my question is, if they're using the pc under windows, how will i access the partitions/files in linux?

tnx.

OT: also, where can i find the list of windows apps equivalent in linux. i mean for example, ms office = openoffice, how about adobe indesign equivalent in linux?

Indesign equivalent in linux is probably scribus... http://www.scribus.net/

Ther are several sites where you can find more info on alternative software.

Open Source Alternatives is a good place to start, but ther are others:

The linux Alternative Project

http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Linux_...indows_software

even ubuntu has it's own page

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareEquivalents

You'll soon find out that this counterparts lack several features, so you may want to try Wine, wich is an "Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix." check their database to see wich programs, versions are supported and at what degree of sucess.

And remember, open source doesn't mean it's free ;)

As for ReiserFS

theres this http://p-nand-q.com/e/reiserfs.html but it's read only.

this: http://yareg.akucom.de/index.html is an implementation of the above with some aditional features and GUI.

this: http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/ext2fsreiser.html also read only and needs total commander.

basicly you're only abble to read form ReiserFS in Windows.

So I'm with markjensen on you be better of with ext3, it's not as fancy as ReiserFS but it has better support in windows. (read and Write)

Best of luck with your linux adventures! :D

With the term co-workers and this statement --> "since i don't own the machine and it is for all"

I assume this is a place of work? I am happy for you that you want to switch or try using linux. But a place of business on equipment that is not yours, is not the place to be playing with it!

Since its seems they will need access to files your going to store on the linux partitions? Unless the BOSS ok's the move to linux, and that everyone is willing to use it. I would suggest you use linux on your own hardware.

But to the guestion directly - as already stated RieserFS would not be windows friendly choice for your linux filesystem, ext3 would be the better option.

wow, that's a lot of answer. thank you very much. and as of now, i already configured the linux box to use reiser on the / partition and ext3 for the /home. :)

  • 2 months later...

looks more like an hardware failure you are talking because I've rebooted countless time my linux on reiserfs and never failed. I even move my partition from a 80gb to a 250gb without any problem.

The only reason this linux is down right now is a kernel crash because I made some error with udev and kernel compile, so a user error. Reiserfs is stable as much as ext3 even more. You have to see if you want the performance of ext3 or reiserfs depending on kind of file, usage and size.

    • MS will replace open AI with their own models soon enough.
    • Funny how that works, yet seems so hard for these companies.
    • Same here. I have been using it on my office and personal PC and have not noticed any memory issues. As of now it's linked and using about 50mb for me. Must be specific to certain PC + Phone combinations. With so many component variations out there, it's hard to determine what could be causing it. Of course, MS would be in a better position to do so.
