Anti-Virus for server 2008

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what anti virus people are using for server 2008 in particular the 64bit Standard edition..... I know its not essential but i want to be sure - i dont like having it used as a file server with no anti virus on it.

Thanks,

Matt

I stopped recommending Symantec after EndPoint came out. I did three upgrades from Corp Edition to Endpoint and each time the week after I would get a call asking why their machines are running so slow. The one time I did have to ring their Technical Support line I was on hold for 58 minutes without speaking to a single support agent. This was the final straw for me. I played with Sophos and found they have a decent partner program which means we can actually make more profit from our AntiVirus installs. When I did ring their Support I got answered straight away. I guess it helps that they arn't as big as Symantec. Sophos are making a program that will search all machines on your network and uninstall the competitor product. This couldn't come soon enough for me as going around every machine at customers sites to uninstall Symantec is a major drag.

I know this posts sounds like a sales speech, but moving away from Symantec was one huge lift off my shoulders. The one dislike I don't like is their Small Business version. The enterprise console gives you alot more control over your clients.

Symantec Endpoint Security v11.0 is running great.

+1 love it even more than Symantec Corp as its derivative.

I was about to say the same thing ;)

We use this but since I don't manage it we can't say it sucks... it could be the administrator himself....

I also am deploying Symantec Endpoint 11 to my 2008 servers. No issues so far. No lag no slowness.

The guy further above mentioning slowness etc, may be a conflict / bug with upgrading from previous version, but I can confirm in my environment that a clean install of endpoint works with no issue.

There's an extensive list of which anti-virus software works (and doesn't work) with Server 2008 here:

http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpres...urity-software/

The comments underneath the table are also worth reading - I used the instructions here to get Kaspersky AV 2009 working with 64-bit Server 2008.

I tried both NOD and Kaspersky, neither works on server 2008, I havent checked if there is a SERVER version out, I just used whatever I had on vista before.

I am using NOD32 v2.70.39 right now with Server 2008. There are many different versions of NOD32, but you probably had the v3.0 "Home" edition. The Home edition doesn't work on Servers.

Running EndPoint 11.0 on Server 2008 Enterprise 64-bit no problems at all. Its not slow, and the management console is streamlined. Works great on Windows Vista too.

We were running an early version of Symantec End Point Protection and it did not work at well. We went back to 10 for the time being as Symantec assured us that the problems we were having were supposed to be fixed with a service pack. I've 'heard' that it's much better with the latest patches. Will be trying it out soon.

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
