High-Quality youTube videos

Recommended Posts

I came accross this today and I thought it was awesome, especially the MP4 stream... since many place (like my college campus) filter flash videos so this is a great way around that.

YouTube has been testing higher bitrate encodings of it videos, which you can see if you add a &fmt=8 or &fmt=16 to the video url. Historically, all videos have been delivered to the lowest common denominator: sorenson encoded 320x240. By adding &fmt=6 to the URL, the video is served up in 448x336 resolution and I'm guessing it's using the VP6 codec (can anyone confirm?). &fmt=18 gives you the iPhone-style MP4 stream.

The large majority of Youtube videos are encoded in 320x240. You can try all you want, the resolution can't be upgraded.

However, I do have stumbled upon some videos where you have an option to view it in higher quality. Then the resolution is indeed higher. But I suppose this is a recent move and I still don't know how you can make your uploads available in higher quality.

Actually, you've misunderstood.

These hacks provide you with an alternate higher quality encoding of the original uploaded video, not a reencoding of the old (current) YouTube video.

Here's proof it works:

Those have the option of clicking for a higher quality video though, some video's do not have this option and i doubt the hacks work on these, seeing as the uploaded video would be 320x240. (This is what the people who doubt the hack thing right?)

EDIT: Nope sorry i stand corrected, it works on videos without the high resolution option  Its nice with the &fmt=18
