BSOD when downloading large files from torrent/newsgroups....

I'm suffering an annoying problem - BSOD when downloading large files from torrent/newsgroups. It tends to only happen when I'm using Firefox to surf the net while stuff downloads. It never happens while I'm using IE7.

I've tried turning down the number of connections for utorrent or Alt.Binz and I've never had any of that pipelining stuff turned on in Firefox...

No error messages except to state that previous shutdown was unexpected.

There are some Error entries about "The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service service which failed to start because of the following error:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

but I don't see what that has to do with downloading files because this recent BSOD occured only 5 minutes after initiating downloading a file

If possible, you might want to try over a wired connection, just to eliminate your wireless NIC drivers from the equation.

Well, the problem is intermittent but I'll give it a go.

I forgot to mention - my newsgroup download is via an SSL subscription so perhaps not have the secure socket stuff turned on was the cause. I've had that service on manual lately and not seen a BSOD yet.

All latest drivers.

I'll try a memory test, too.

This problem happened before SP1, too.

I've turned on SSTP service too because my newsgorup account connects via SSL and that could be linked....?

If you mean SSDP, it's related to Universal PnP. It shouldn't affect SSL connections.

    • Tim Cook: "The US over time began to stop having as many vocational kinds of skills." What's the point of wasting time getting those skills if you can't get a job with them? Good Lord, maybe he and his cohort of CEO's who exported all these jobs to China should just shut the f**k up :D

    • Closed-loop cooling and a custom 800G network protocol let the $7.3B campus run as one AI training machine. Microsoft confirmed June 23, 2026, that its Fairwater campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is fully operational — and the engineering behind it makes the facility something fundamentally different from every data center that came before it. Where conventional cloud infrastructure racks up general-purpose servers and parcels out workloads to each one independently, Fairwater links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell GPUs into a single, coherent cluster using a two-story building design, 800-gigabit-per-second Ethernet fabric, and a proprietary networking protocol co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA. The result, according to Microsoft, is the closest thing to a purpose-built AI supercomputer that any company has ever placed in commercial operation. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319205/20260627/microsoft-opens-fairwater-wisconsin-ai-campus-runs-one-supercomputer-via-800g-ethernet.htm
