I don't really have the option of purchasing more equipment, although I'm sure it'd make this task much easier. I've been reading a bit since my original post, and does anyone think using ICS would be a good method? The PC with the modem could be connected to the wireless router via ethernet for the wireless router to be used more as a wireless access point. I could use the modem PC as the functioning 'router' and set it to share its dialup connection with all computers on its network. I'm not familiar with the details on this, but if anyone knows if this is a good idea or knows more on the topic, a response would be very appreciated.

it would be way to slow if you connected it to a wireless network, so your friend cant recieve wired boardband ? if not.. is there wireless internet you can purchase over there? because down in australia we have unwired which is internet service wirelessly which all we need is a provided wireless modem.. because dial up is way to slow to share. even though only one person going to use it on the network..

I live in a large city, but my friend lives in a small town about 15 miles away. There they have no access to broadband internet of any kind. Sharing the dialup connection seems to be the only route to take. If it's only being used by one machine at a time would it still be too slow?

it would be fine if a wireless router would help. She would need another piece of hardware which would convert the DUN to LAN so the router can connect to it and then share it wirelessly. It's either that or using a old PC as the host and sharing it through that. Is it a dedicated line for dialup or just the regular use it when you need it on the mainline setup?

apparently though, some of the older routers (Apple Airport) had wireless and a built in modem in it also. I can't find any model numbers now but it's either those or what i mentioned above or these:

which is a WWAN router. It uses the same cell phone signal she gets at her house (hopefully one of them works) and shares it wirelessly. Guess she wouldn't have to go that router as she could ust stick the card in her PC anyways but if it's for her and the rest of the house those things come in handy. (Not so cheap though... )

Edit - here's one of those Airport base stations - http://cgi.ebay.com/AirPort-Extreme-Base-S...1QQcmdZViewItem

She only has one phone line and there is a desktop PC that could be used as the ICS. I'd love to be able to get a router that supports dial-up, but I don't really have that option. Anyone know how I can configure ICS to work as the "router" and still get the wireless to work with her laptop?

There would be nothing wrong using ICS on the PC with the modem to share the dial-up connection through the wireless router. You will just have to make sure that the routing is setup properly on the router.

IE. PC with dial-up will have to have an IP of 192.168.0.1. The router will need to be configured as a different IP (ie 192.168.0.254). You will need to setup the dhcp on the router to dish out 192.168.0.x range IP's plus 192.168.0.1 as the default gateway AND dns server. Otherwise just configure the laptop manually.

It will still, however, be hella slow sharing a dial-up connection!!
