nVidia Control Panel - Video Card Fans

Question

I'm not sure if this is considered to be a software or hardware or PC modding issue at the moment. I think it is the nVidia Control Panel...

Here's the story...I have the PC as listed in my signature. I use the absolute latest stable drivers available from nVidia. I'm not too big on how much noise my PC makes - all I care about is framerates! - so I want to kick my two video card fans to 80% while gaming. The control panel says you do this by using a nice profile which loads certain pre-set settings when certain things occur - like launching a specific application. However, this did not work in the least bit. Then I tried to just have the fans at 80% all the time. But the fans resort to what seems to be defaults randomly. Sometimes I can close the control panel and the fans stay at 80% for a few seconds other times they slow down right when I close the control panel. I've also tried leaving the panel open and playing my game, but the fans still slow down. The most annoying thing to me is when things don't work how they are suppose to. Hope you guys have some insite.

EDIT: Oh yeah and I have also tried the latest Beta drivers...

Now that you bring it up, I remember reading about RivaTuner before. I'll give it a try when I'm home in a bit. However, I would very much prefer if the control panel could be fixed or maybe I'm not doing it right...I don't like installing applications and utilities that do what I could normally do without them, even if it is a bit more work.

I tried using nTune, but it would not load the profile I had setup. Whenever I rebooted, I had to go back and set my fan speed again.

EXACTLY, I forgot to mention that I installed nTune too. Except I had no luck at all with it...wouldn't load the profile...ever. Also, I'm wondering what OS you have installed.

I have a similar problem with ntune in vista when I try to OC, I can OC, save the profile, set the custom rules so it is st to start up when windows boots, but when I reboot it goes back to stock and I have to manually load the profile, VERY annoying. And rivatuner is even more annoying because it prompts for UAC at boot.

I noticed that too, there has to be some way to make it just run without the prompt.

Well I have my UAC set to automatically accept the UAC prompts. This is something new I set as of yesterday, so I'm going to see if works out.

Here's a link of where I found it:

I just booted to Vista, and had a reg file I got from BrandonLive that fixed the prompts.

Well this is intriguing i guess...RivaTuner is doing the same thing. It look like you can set fan speeds directly on the video cards and also through the forceware drivers. Changing the speeds both ways still results in the fans going back to lower speeds.

EDIT: If I reboot, RivaTuner does apply the fan settings every time, but they go back to defaults after about 20 seconds. I guess this is less random than using nTune.

    • The level of stupidity at Google and Microsoft is beyond belief. All they are doing by killing this is forcing people to jump over to Firefox and ditch them all together, therefore giving Firefox the market boost it needs to finally crush them all in the end.
