WSUS DB instance taking up too much RAM...

Recommended Posts

I just implemented WSUS at one of my clients, and the RAM usage of the SQL db instance is way too high.

Does anyone have experience adjusting the amount of RAM a DB can use?

I'm familiar with Enterprise Manager; unfortunately this client doesn't have Enterprise Manager available.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Found this: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/20...-more-time.aspx

And this: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/20...that-matter.asp which makes the process easier.

After getting an access error, and performing this, I still get an access error; neither sqlcmd, osql or the GUI allow access.

what versions of wsus and SQL?

SQL 2000 and MSDE ram consumption can be configured from SQL enterprise manager

SQL 2005 inc express edition have SQL Server Management Studio Express

I found this, but cannot connect to the databse.

After attempting to use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect, I even tried osql and sqlcmd with no luck.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

I assume by the fact you are running SQL Server Managment Studio that you are using SQL Server 2005.

I think you have more than 1 problem if you cant connect to your SQL Server. Try rebotting the sql server then try and login to it again.

Do you have remote desktop / physical access to the sql server. Login to Machien as an Administrator. Run the Managment Studio app, and attempt to login.

bobbba: Sorry for not including the WSUS version. I'm 3.0.

The SQL version is 2005 Embedded, which comes free with WSUS.

I can not reboot the server, and rebooting the server will not help.

The real question is, has anyone ever connected to the "Windows Internal Database," aka MICROSOFT##SSEE, before? If so, what are the credentials needed? The NT Auth\Network System user is running the sqlservr.exe instance, and local Administrators has full control to the ldf/mdf that is the database.

As you can see I'm kind of stuck, and, albeit not massively critical; it would be worth gaining access.
