[Official] Age of Conan

Not enjoying it that much so far (It's not 'Wowing' me anyway). Only level 6, almost 7... The load times are pretty bad (when you enter a new section). The graphics are much better than WoW but hardly amazing, I don't like the artwork much.... They don't appear to warrant the huge gfx/cpu combo to make it run and look well (e.g. poorly optimized).

Has crashed a few times as well, once just after character creation, at the loading screen before the beach.

The voice acting is pretty good. Not sure I like the 'shield' system.. But I guess that makes the combat a little less boring.

Overall it lacks that polish that you expect as it's almost ready for the public.

It is a "stress test" beta so it's not the version the public will get.

Its pretty dang close considering the game is scheduled to release in like 16 days?

I agree with you imachip. I really expected this to be good enough to be the "wow killer" but I am very disappointed. I mean overall I give it a 7.5-8, but definately not going to quit wow over it. I mean it has some great aspects, like the pvp is great!! much better than wow's pvp to me, but the single player side, I don't like.

I really don't like the combat system at all, I was hoping it would be the "next big thing" but honestly if I wanted a combat system like that, I would go play streetfighter or Tekken or something. The graphics are great though when running Vista and DX10, but as imachip stated, no reason for it to be THAT much of a system hog for what it shows.

Overall I think AoC probably has enough to pull some old wow players over, but definately not enough to be the wow killer as we all hoped.

The game already went gold, which means the cd's are already packed and are waiting to be shipped. So if this isn't the game we're getting then for god's sake they will have to fix everything with large patches..... It's already a 12gb game and some are expecting 25gb for the polished copy.

I've noticed that it seems to run much better under Vista for me than XP. Not as much pure framerate but overall smoothness and level loading times. The game also seems to use more memory (2-300M) under Vista which I assume accounts for this.

I am liking the combo system the more I use it, especially as they get longer and mroe powerful. Makes anticipating the enemy's shields more rewarding.

The open beta is actually an older client. An official on the Conan boards was quoted in saying that the open beta used a client that was actually older than the PVP beta that happened a few weeks ago. The current version that is supposedly less laggy and less buggy. We shall see.

It takes forever to install this stuff.

to install? i've been in line to download the game client from fileplanet for the past 12 hours and i'm only #522 on the westcoast server!!

i can't even imagine how long it'll take to download the 12GB AFTER waiting litterally 20+ hours i'll have to wait to get to the front of the line. this is ridiculous. they need to start releasing this stuff in torrent form  or at least let some partner sites have a direct download up

It takes forever to install this stuff.

Yeah, took me about 40-50 minutes to install this beast. That's worse than Gears of War was!

I predict massive failure in the future of this game. Age of Conan: Loading Adventures.

Age of Conan will do quite well actually. It has a built in fan base (there are many, many people who love the Conan universe and lore, as it is VERY deep). And while it may have bugs now, and take awhile to load new areas etc, that can all be ironed out in patches very easily. No MMORPG launch goes without a hitch (except LoTRO, GW and a couple others) really, so it isn't that unusual.

Well, unless they do something major to the client, I won't be able to run it on this PC. I am not kidding, I get 3 fps in most areas of the game. Everything is on low or off, and it's just unplayable.

If I ever get my uber rig in here, that's a different story, I'm sure I can max it out (in DX10 to boot) on that rig :D

Anyone else having a problem logging into the beta right now? I keep getting an error saying my password is incorrect :(

you're using the wrong client

How does the fighting style work and everything... I heard some things. Like you move your mouse and what ever direction it moves is where the sword swings and stuff.

kinda. it's real time fighting so if you attack and then turn your character around then you'll attack which ever direction you're facing. you can choose to attack at diagonal angles as well because people with sheilds get to choose which direction they want to block from

i just cant get over the combat system. having the 1,2,3 keys bound to basic swings makes it F'n hard to get to all the combos. and there are ALL kinds of combos! if they revamped the control system and how it pertains to combat i would seriously consider this game.

graphics are nice, however the atmosphere seems lacking, and i cant put my finger on why. its odd, the graphics are far superior to WoW in every way. the lighting, the high polygon models, the shaders, everything. but for what ever reason, it just does not have the same imersive feel as wow. which is crazy, really, because ive always thoughts WoW's graphics where sub-par, regardless of their EXTREMELY talented artists.

The closest thing I can compare the combat system to is Marrowind's Oblivion, with more options/steps. You do have the ability to select a target but there is no auto attack. You have to choose which type of attack you want to use for each swing, over head (straight forward), swing left or swing right. Different combos require different swings.

The graphics are better than wow but not as good as EQ2's. (this is speaking from experiencing the PVP weekend). 5 more days and I can download the actual game and start playing.

I don't think out of the gate it will be wow killer but give it some time, it has the potential to put a dent into blizzards money farming ways.

WoW seems to be more....socially oriented. a few big open cities that everyone flocks too

i've only gotten to lvl 13 so far but i see none of that in AoC. the cities are massive and very "busy" looking. i just think there's too much going on, BUT this game has a tone of lore behind it so you can't really tone it down

oh and the graphics are "dark". i like bright, shiny, open spaces. but it seems the more realistic games try to look the more dark they end up being. just not my kind of game i guess. oh well, i'm just playing this beta as i wait for the Darkfall beta to come out

i would much prefer an oblivion style combat system where left click is attack and right click is block. this way all my number keys can be assosiated with special abilities and items.

on the note of hotbars, only being able to have one horizontal bar frustrates me. having to hold a function key to expose the second is not to my liking.

    • The laptop in the bedroom is an Acer with i7-10510U CPU. Acer's website states they will not be upgrading it so I had little choice other than disable secure boot. I know next to nothing on these matters so hopefully it will be fine.
    • GitHub removes manual model selection from Copilot free and student plans by Karthik Mudaliar GitHub is removing the ability to manually select an AI model from its Copilot Free and Student plans, making its automatic routing system the default and only way to choose a model. This means users on these tiers will no longer be able to deliberately select a particular OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Microsoft model for a task. In its announcement, GitHub said Copilot Auto will dynamically choose what it considers the best model for each request. Free and Student accounts will retain access to models from multiple families, although the available selection will continue to depend on the restrictions attached to each plan. GitHub did not identify a fixed pool of models that Auto will always use, and its documentation warns that model availability can change over time. GitHub describes Auto as more than a random fallback system. On supported surfaces, its task-optimization technology evaluates the complexity of a request alongside real-time information about model health and availability. Straightforward prompts can be routed to faster and less expensive models, while more demanding coding tasks may be sent to higher-cost reasoning models. The company says this approach should reduce rate limiting, latency, and failed requests. Auto generally selects one model along natural prompt-caching boundaries rather than repeatedly switching models during a session, as GitHub found that mid-session changes increased costs without producing sufficient improvements in output quality. Users can still check which model generated a response. In Copilot Chat, the information appears when hovering over an answer, while Copilot CLI and the Copilot cloud agent display the selected model alongside their output. Auto is available in Copilot Chat, Copilot CLI, and the cloud agent, with the exact implementation and release status varying between supported development environments. The latest restriction follows several months of adjustments to Copilot’s individual plans. GitHub temporarily halted new Pro, Pro+, and Student subscriptions in April as it sought to manage demand and service reliability. It later introduced token-based billing and began gradually reopening individual-plan registrations on June 17. Alongside the picker change, GitHub is retiring the “Preview” label from Microsoft-developed models. It argues that the label is no longer necessary because Auto handles model routing and models are continuously updated behind the scenes.

    • Google reportedly set to lose two key Gemini and DeepMind researchers to Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly preparing to lose two more prominent artificial intelligence researchers, with Gemini contributors Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join rival AI developer Anthropic. According to a report from Bloomberg, both researchers are viewed internally as important contributors to Google’s flagship Gemini model family. Adler worked on Google’s AI coding efforts, while Pritzel was involved in the process used to train AI systems. Neither company has publicly confirmed the moves. The report also does not say when the researchers will formally leave Google or what positions they will hold at Anthropic. Training a large AI model requires decisions covering its architecture, data preparation, distributed computing infrastructure, and post-training methods that shape how the finished system behaves. Researchers with experience operating at the scale of Gemini are consequently difficult to replace quickly. Both Adler and Pritzel have previously contributed to Google DeepMind’s scientific research as well. They are listed among the authors of the company’s work on expanding AlphaFold protein-structure predictions across entire proteomes, alongside AlphaFold researchers including John Jumper. The reported departures arrive shortly after another important change within Google’s Gemini organization. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving Google for OpenAI, after returning to the search company in 2024 through its deal with Character.AI. Shazeer is particularly well known as one of the authors of the Transformer paper, whose architecture became the foundation for most modern large language models. Anthropic, meanwhile, has been recruiting recognizable figures from other leading laboratories. OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic’s pre-training team in May. His move, followed by the reported recruitment of several Google researchers, suggests Anthropic is strengthening the research teams responsible for the core capabilities of future Claude models rather than concentrating solely on product and enterprise sales. The competition is complicated by the companies’ extensive commercial relationships. Anthropic competes directly with Google’s Gemini models, but it also relies on Google as an infrastructure partner. In April, Anthropic announced an expanded agreement with Google and Broadcom covering multiple gigawatts of next-generation Tensor Processing Unit capacity.
