PS3 has outsold Xbox 360 in Europe

Recommended Posts

Did a quick search and I couldn't find this. :)

SCEE boss David Reeves has told the audience at the PlayStation Day conference that Sony is beating Microsoft in the console battle - in Europe, at least. "I am delighted to be able announce today that we have sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3," he said.

More than 5 million PS3 consoles have now been shifted in Europe, according to Reeves. "We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price," he said.

Referring to Xbox 360, Reeves said Sony's machine has been outselling its closest competitor since October 2007, despite the latest price cut. He offered no comment on sales of the Wii.

Reeves also said 12 million PSP handhelds and 48 million PS2s have been sold in Europe. He added, "These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures."

Other stats revealed at the event included the fact that 3.2 million gamers have now registered on PlayStation Network, and more than 57 million items of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

Sales of EyeToy games have now reached 6.7 million, while for Buzz! the figure is 6 million and for SingStar it's 12 million. On average, each SingStar PS3 owner has paid for and downloaded six additional songs.

Reeves said new global hardware sales figures will be revealed in Tokyo next week. He reiterated that by the end of 2007 more than 10.5 million PS3s, 34 million PSPs and 127 million PS2s had been sold around the world.

So what's helped PS3 reach the 5 million mark in Europe? It's all about "the quality of the software", reckons Reeves. "And now with exclusive titles such as Haze, LBP, Resistance, MotorStorm, customers are buying into PS3 as the ultimate gaming system."

This announcement was part of PlayStation Day, so it has been covered in this topic - https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=634462

Although your search wouldn't of brought it up as it's within a topic with a title that is to do with PlayStation Day.

As for this news, not that surprising. Europe as a whole has always been PS brand strong, only this generation has the Xbox posed a bigger threat in the UK, but we all know, the UK is not Europe.

I'm personally unsure - especially with the recent XBOX 360 price cuts - I just don't see how the PS3 could have sold more.

As you pointed out the price cuts were recent - Sales figures are usually posted a month or two AFTER the month in question. They need to be counted up/gathered from retail first.

And we all know since the start of the year the 360 got off to a shakey start with the supposed stock issues.

In Europe the PS3 GTA4 bundle probably didn't do that bad at shipping hardware either. It wouldn't surprise me in Europe if the PS3 shipped more hardware for GTA4, and more software.

The prior to GTA4 there was the GT5P bundle that sold well - 1.5 million copies of GT5P sold in Europe.

Even if the 360 done better in the UK, there is still a lot of other countries that make up Europe for the final figures.

VGChartz estimated it at 60:40 for PS3 in Europe, and reversed 60:40 for 360 in America on GTA4 sales.

I'm personally unsure - especially with the recent XBOX 360 price cuts - I just don't see how the PS3 could have sold more.

I agree. The XBOX360 can be had for half the price and simply has better games.

So what's helped PS3 reach the 5 million mark in Europe? It's all about "the quality of the software", reckons Reeves

David is a clown. Quality of software my arse. There wasn't hardly any good games out for the system for well over a year and they pushed PS3 has a Blu-ray first and a gaming machine second. I am not saying future titles/projects such as Home, LBP etc are going to be crap, but just looking at the software for the system and there is nothing that stands out or Exclusive that can be brought on XBOX360. If he was talking about "Quality of software" then what is Exclusive on PS3 that makes it so great? Nothing. I wouldn't be suprised if half of the sold number in Europe brought it because of the Blu-ray capability. If the PS3 was so far ahead in the quality of titles then why does it have such a lower attach rate of games sold with the system compared to the XBOX360?

What does that have to do with statistical figures?

This topic has nothing to do with what console YOU prefer, it's just an indicator of how the PS3 HARDWARE is selling in Europe.

Doesn't matter what's selling the hardware out of the software/blu ray, it's moving.

I knew this topic was going to explode into a "PS3 vs 360" war...

Yeah that's right, Sony PR is going to stand on a stage at a PlayStation event and say anything otherwise.

Well I had a quick look through the Playstation Day topic, and I couldn't find anything really anyway. :)

That is exactly what I didn't want to happen. :(

it always happens here :( There are alot of Sony haters/360 fanboys. Just have ignore them. Ignore feature is very useful then you cant see anything they post (Y)

I don't know how Sony manages to outsell 360 even after releasing a system with 12 month gap with the closest competitor. Also not having any good games for 6+ months after the system released, either he's shooting star or Europe has totally ******* gamers who don't know how to by a gaming system.

No offence but if you see a high prices, no good games and dust collecting console and you buy that thing it's pretty much clear your are a f**b** and nothing else. I do agree I have 2 PS3's myself but I like many other sane gamer bought after the prices was lowered and when they started releasing good games (Like Ninja Gaiden, GT5, etc).

I just don?t for out my money for any company because I used to like their product.

That's what always happens, usually 360 FB's are in Sony's thread and PS3 FB's are in Microsoft's thread. Trojan arses I guess. :D

I am sorry Audio but i'm refering to what he said "Quality of Software" in his statement. I know PS3 HARDWARE is selling (no need to CAP it for me) which explains this in his statement but i still take it with a pinch of salt.

He said the reason why PS3 has sold more is because of "Quality of Software", then please David tell us where this quality software you are talking about.

PS3 has got where it is because of Blu-ray, and this was the case when it first came out because there were next to no good games for 6+ months like Neo003 stated, there was very few titles for the system after that and nearly all of them can be aquired on XBOX360.

The PS3 is not an Exclusive console with Exclusive titles so saying otherwise is a joke. The PS3 has been pushed as a Blu-ray layer and ther moment HD-DVD threw in the towel, people rushed to buy PS3s for Blu-ray. David is indeed an idiot if he thinks PS3 is where it is because of the games, as that would be an insult to even PS3s owners. It has got there because of Blu-ray (is that software? noooo)

I just don’t for out my money for any company because I used to like their product.

A lot of people believe if they got what they wanted on a previous console with the name, they'll get what they want on it's next iteration.

Not a bad logic for the casual crowd to follow, it usually holds strong.

A lot of the software for the platforms you see comes from 1st party developers/strong 3rd party links and/or to do with where the console is made.

The PS was very RPG orientated as JRPGs are very popular and the PS comes from Japan - Fits like a glove for the console due to it's homeland being where the games are made.

I'm not going to "justify" what he said for two reasons

a) We know it's typical PR - Sony PR is going to praise themselves - WhyTF would he stand there and go our software hasn't been up to par?

b) Software is a opinionated subject and you should know that - Here on Neowin we get the regulars saying the PS3 has "no games", yet there is PS3 owners with 5-6-7+ games that the play and enjoy.

I don't really see why you're going this deep into an argument on software, this topic is showing the hardware Sony has sold, so you can either say well done Sony, or just not care.

I also find it very strange how you say it's nothing to do with games at all, when GT5P has sold 1.5 million units in Europe alone, and other games like COD4, Uncharted, R&C, Warhawk, GTA4, Sports franchises like Fifa/Pro Evo, ect have sold well on the PS3.

It doesn't matter if titles are multiplatform or not, if they sell well.

Sadly you just sound like someone that really dislikes Sony and the PS3, and therefore I don't know why you actually want to spend your time discussing them in this topic. I know Neowin gives you a free reign to go where you want, but cmon don't turn every positive PS3 thread into a 360 VS PS3 argument, or a topic on why "console x" is better.

These sales figures are good in light of the poor launch and tough first year Sony had - So whether it's BR or games, or a mix of both that helped the PS3, well done Sony I say for making the first year look better on paper than the media would tell you it was (Y)

Let's hope 2008 is even better, and if it is, you should easily smash 10.5 million units this year!

Well it was going to happen once you put "Xbox 360" in the topic title, hence the lesson learned next time just put "closest competitor ('s)"

You've got to be kidding me.

Everyone and their dog knows the 360 is the direct competition to the PS3.

Your solution would never work as the same immature people would still bulldoze the topic regardless. It's probably just the positive PS3 part that riles some up, not the mention of a rival/competition.

I don't buy it. He states that 5 million have been sold in EU without stating the number of Xbox 360's he thinks have been sold in the EU. You can't just give your own number and say you're doing better without saying what you're comparing that number to.

-Spenser

It's a very brave thing for the head PR to lie about.

If it's incorrect expect MS to correct Sony within the next day or two, if they don't, then well I guess you can still draw your own conclusions...

Holy crap! You sure you don't work for Sony Audio, because for a minute i thought you did with that reply.

I would love nothing better for Sony to bring out GREAT & EXCLUSIVE games for the PS3, aswell as get DS3 here in Europe and i have confidence that it WILL(not yet it's not) be a great platform BUT what he is saying is bull**** and you know it. If there was load of great games over XBOX360 then he would have a case and i wouldn't argue against it.

I don't think software can be opinionated on PS3 because at this present time it still doesnt have much and hardly any Exclusives either.

I don't mean to be turning this into a 360 vs PS3, but my personal experience is a lot of people I know would prefer the PS3 after owning an Xbox 360 for many months. This is because the near inevitability that the 360 units will fail. I know several people who are interested in just one or two playstation brands (like gt5p) who don't care about other titles, just what they want. the playstation brand has always been popular in europe. whereas the X360 has the US market, its most likely because its a US company with games aimed at americans. I think europeans and the japanese likely have more in common with games tastes.

    • U.S. partially reverses Anthropic AI ban for Mythos but keeps Fable 5 off the market by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic says that the U.S. government has finally allowed it to restore Claude Mythos 5. But of course, there's a catch. The rollout is again for a limited set of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. The company announced this in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This does not mean that Anthropic's latest frontier models are back to normal availability. Fable 5, which was a tuned version of Mythos 5 for public release, remains unavailable. Anthropic said that it is still working with the government to expand Mythos 5 access and make Fable 5 available again, but there's no timeline. Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters say that this decision actually came through a letter from the U.S. Commerce Department. According to Reuters, this would allow more than 100 companies and institutions access to Mythos 5. Reuters also reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s letter removes the need for export licenses for approved companies’ non-US citizen employees, as well as Anthropic’s own non-US citizen employees, while restrictions remain for organizations outside the approved list. Anthropic isn't alone with this kind of controlled rollout. OpenAI's newest model family, GPT 5.6, was announced just yesterday, but isn't available for everyone yet. In its announcement, OpenAI also said that access to these models is initially limited to a select group of trusted partners and organizations, with broader access planned later this year. Both of these cases show that frontier AI launches are no longer just ordinary product releases and more like slow and vetted deployments shaped heavily by the U.S. government.

Quick links: Windows 10 and 11 Windows Insider Program Updates are available Reviews are in Gaming news Great deals to check Windows 11 and Windows 10 Here, we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And, of course, you may find a word or two about older versions. On June 24, 2026, Windows 11 turned five. The controversial operating system was released half a decade ago, and during these years, it received a fair share of criticism (such as poor Windows Search and its web results), which Microsoft is now actively addressing with regular preview updates that deliver missing, long-requested features. With Windows 12 nowhere to be seen on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if Windows 11 can stay on the market for as long as Windows 10 did. Speaking of Windows 10 and staying on the market, this week, Microsoft quietly prolonged the Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10, allowing users to get one more year of security updates if they do not want or cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Finally, Microsoft released this month's non-security update for Windows 11. Despite using on-device models for natural search, some users found it creepy, claiming that Microsoft lacks trust in features like this. While the ability to find pages without using 100% precise words may sound cool, customers argued that it was nothing but another feature to bloat the browser with more AI. Good riddance? PowerToys received several updates this week. For one, Microsoft released version 0.100.1 with several improvements and bug fixes for the recently arrived version 0.100. A couple of days later, Microsoft dropped another update, this time fixing memory leaks in Command Palette Dock. In addition, the company is working on a new module that will make it easier to switch between windows within one application using the Alt + ` shortcut. Finally, Microsoft is discontinuing the 2TB Xbox Series X. To make up for that, Microsoft announced a few programs to make its consoles more accessible. Those include BNPL, interest-free financing, pre-owned consoles, certified refurbished consoles, and more. Valve also shared some not-so-welcome news.
