Hmm... the conversation's gone askew...

Anyway, loose tin foil hat or not, I still think an IP that keeps changing is better, since one that remains the same would mean it is always known you are on that compu. Like I've said earlier, I don't know much about these things, maybe nothing... :((

<snipped>

As for paranoia, I never worried about people trying to get me earlier, but about two months back, the computer went hang when I was on the net, and when I restarted manually, later I found that ZoneAlarm had blocked two serious attempts. A few days after that, the problems began: every time I started the computer, the Found New Hardware dialog would come up, and at times I even allowed it to run, but it would say the new hardware couldnt be installed. Then Internet Explorer (which I didnt use, just let it remain in the background) started opening on its own; later, I came to know that at least one part of the problem was by something called Trojan.Vundo. Since I had installed all the security apps, I found it strange that things (noise or whatever you call them) were able to get in, especially since I had till now never ever faced any such problem. So now, I think its better to be safe rather than finding oneself ****ed. To a person who doesn't know much, a burst in security warnings is bound to be unnerving.

Bitdefender blocked two port scanning attempts today... should I be worried...

"Bitdefender blocked two port scanning attempts today... should I be worried..."

I thought you were going to put your router doing NAT? You would not see port scans if you were behind a NAT..

As to your IP changing.. Who is going to know???

"remains the same would mean it is always known you are on that compu. "

WHO is going to always know?? The people in the black helicopters?

As to how you got infected with "Trojan.Vundo" There are lots of way.

Put your modem back to being a NAT router vs just a bridge.

Changing the IP has its benefit in that I don't need to wait (as a free user) to download from RapidShare. I am not such a heavy downloader that I'd go in for a premium account. Earlier, with the modem saving the username password, I had to manually switch off / on the modem, and it would take up to two minutes for the whole process to complete. Now, once the modem connects to the network, all I have to do is just press disconnect on the internet connection dialog box, and relogin, and I can relogin in five seconds flat, and get to work.

I have tried using ipconfig /renew, but it gives the message "the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"; I read that you have to keep the setting as "Obtain IP address automatically", and I tried that, now after some time, I get the message "An error occurred while renewing interface Net : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

If there is any method where the modem is a NAT router, and also the IP can be changed instantly, then tell me.

Yeah I caught the Canadian part -- did you not notice my "Canuck" reference? ;)

yeah but I tought you were talking to the Vancouver's guy..... (isn't there an NHL team witch name is Canuck's from Vancouver?)

I learn new things everyday!

... should I be worried...

yes you should, but not for the same reason you think.... as I've seen on your other thread, you wanted to use windows 98 on a double core three gigahertz pentium because XP is to slow, defenetly your heading to the wrong direction, your computer's probably filled up with viruses or spyware or adware or any kind of crap software that just shouldn't be there, and as for your router, look's like you just messed it all up and the situation is going out of control for you. This is not bad or pejorative, when we feel a pain on our body, we go see a doctor because it's impossible for everyone of us to know everything. I still think you should pay someone to come and help you a little bit, then everything would be fine..... :)

the link works but I only get a 1K file impossible to read in adobe 8.1 or 6.0

I've scanned the computer with BitDefender, and with all the scanning apps that Zone Alarm and SpyWare Doctor and SpyBot have, and they all say the computer is clean. But HD movies won't play properly on my computer, the audio and video go out of sync after a while. Maybe I should just format it all once and reinstall and then see what happens.

as for a pentium 4 being slow... are you sure it don't self protect itself because it's overheating (like half a inch of dust on the cpu heatsink)?

I don't know all of the anti-spy softwares you use, but I just would like you to know that some of those "great software" are just an open door for more sh*t.

also, some applications, that use/modify shared files and registery may cause compatibility problems between them, (specially if you use programs that were design for win 9x)...

and we could go on for a while like this....

I'm a automotive technician and tuesday this week, I had to fix a "no start" condition on a '97 hyundai accent. The owner of the car had been trying hard to get it running for the last 3 weeks because he don't have a lots of money and he wanted to save his pennies... result: I spent about three and a half hours just for putting back together all the things the owner messed up when I attempted to diagnose is problem..... then I spent about three quarter an hour diagnosing/fixing the reason why his car has been stuck in his driveway for the last 3 weeks.

By the way, the networking problem we should be talking about in this thread is still not solved as far as I can see.....

For the third time, please do yourself a favor! Your computer is screaming because he's hurt, call himself a doctor.

Im not sure on your model, but most routers support a disconnect from the pppoe.. Just login to the router web ui to do this.. This would provide the same feature as you doing it on your computer.

So what you can not wait 30 freaking seconds to download a file???

Once your behind a NAT, doing a ipconfig /renew on your PC will do nothing but renew your lease from your routers dhcp server. Which would have to be enabled for starters, and yes your pc would have to be set to use dhcp to get its ip.

Which has NOTHING to do with what your public IP is. This would only be on your router, once you switch it back to NAT.

First thing I suggest before you attempt fixing any software issue, did you "stress and test" your hardware to make sure it is stable?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_test

Went to the wikipedia page, found something called GIMPS, but the test there says it will take a month! Maybe you could guide me on this.

as for a pentium 4 being slow... are you sure it don't self protect itself because it's overheating (like half a inch of dust on the cpu heatsink)?

"self protect", what's that?

Well, my CPU fan makes a horrible noise at times, like someone is trying to kill it and it is calling out for help. In the older version of Win XP (the one that I have been using for more than an year now, and have messed up), in many drives, the Disk Cleanup just doesn't start, and at this time, the CPU fan starts working furiously. I called my computer guy, and he said that this is normal, and all new PCs have CPU fans which increase and decrease their speed. As for dust, he said there is nothing that can be done about it: he said he'd come and remove it from time to time, but asked me not to do it, as I might end up damaging something else.

I have found this new computer to be pretty slow when I look at all that it is (P4 3.0 GHz; 1 GB RAM); my older computer (P3 1.5 GHz; 256 MB RAM) gives pretty much the same performance it seems. I mean, I haven't found any real increase in the loading time of windows or of any softwares.

But I think before thinking of formatting the whole thing, I'll have to do something else to make sure there is no hardware problem.

And yes, I have to wait about an hour or so after one file finishes downloading from RapidShare; now all I do is press disconnect, and then connect again, and the whole process take ten seconds.

    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2, urges IT admins to prepare for release by Usama Jawad Windows 11 typically follows an annual update cycle, but Microsoft recently broke that tradition a bit by releasing a "26H1" version in the first half of this year as a "scoped" build for select new silicon PCs only. This version was not available for customers using 24H2 and 25H2 builds, as Microsoft is busy preparing version 26H2 for them, confirmed officially for the first time. In a Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft has urged IT admins to prepare for the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H2. The company has confirmed that this will be a small enablement package (eKB) that will simply light up certain disabled features that are already present in the operating system's code base. This means that the "refined" Windows update and deployment experience will be simpler and quicker, with minimal disruptions, as the feature update will simply toggle a few flags rather than performing a complete replacement. Microsoft has explained that this is all possible because the standard Windows 11 releases share the same servicing branch and hence, the same source code. However, this also means that Windows 11 26H1 users won't be able to upgrade to 26H2 as that is a different branch, but this is something we have known for a while now. Similar to previous annual feature updates, Windows 11 26H2 will offer the following support cycles: 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions 36 months of support for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise Multi-session editions Microsoft has not confirmed a concrete release date for Windows 11 26H2, but noted that it is "coming soon". If we go by the ongoing release cadence, we can expect it to begin rolling out in early October 2026. As such, IT admins have been encouraged to begin validating Windows Insider releases in the Experimental Channel, plan rollout rings, and strategize the utilization of their existing deployment tools.
    • Windows 11 gets new audio improvements in the latest builds by Taras Buria Today's Experimental builds (26H1 and Future Platforms, formerly Canary) pack several audio-related improvements. If your device is enrolled in the Experimental Channel (26H1), you can download build 28120.2315, while those in the Future Platforms version have build 29613.1000 to try. Here is what is new in build 29613.1000: [Audio] Following up on our previous improvements, we’re making some more adjustments to Settings > System > Sounds based on your feedback. Namely, we’ve updated the “All sound devices” page so: You now have the ability to change default devices from this page. Each of the devices displayed on this page now has a little volume meter next to it to show if there is audio actively playing. We’ve adjusted the page design slightly so now you can filter whether you’re viewing input or output devices. We’ve added toggles so you can choose if you want to hide or show disabled, disconnected, and unplugged devices on this page. We’ve also updated the input and output audio properties page for devices in Settings to now include jack information for those that need it. And here is the changelog for build 28120.2315: This update includes a small number of minor bug fixes and improvements. [Accessibility] This update improves caption style responsiveness by redrawing captions immediately for caption style changes. If no current caption is visible, a sample caption string is displayed. [Audio] This update improves the reliability of the inbox HD Audio driver. You can find the official release notes for build 28120.2315 here and for build 29613.1000 here.
    • I agree with what I think you are saying, just not in the way you are saying it. Like any tool, the amount it represents your work is perorational to the effort you put into it. It is similar to why 2nd grade math students learning to add and subtract are not allowed to use calculators, but a high-school calculous student is. For the 2nd grader, that tool would completely replace the work they are doing, for the calculous student the same tool allows them to work far more effectively while in no way replacing their effort or knowable. If you spend 30 seconds writing a prompt, then the image that comes out is no more "yours" than if you found the same image with a Google Image search. However, many of these generative tools also support highly iterative processes that allow back and forth, and merging generated images with photos or human created images. I am sure you would agree that a human spending hours of time working on a project, even if AI was involved in the process, still reflects that human's work.
    • Windows 11 version 26H2 is now available for testing in the latest preview build by Taras Buria Friday Windows 11 preview builds are here. Insiders in the Experimental (formerly Dev) and Beta Channel can download builds 26300.8697 and 26220.8690. There are no new features, but Microsoft is officially moving the Experimental Channel to version 26H2. In addition, Microsoft is improving the copy dialog in File Explorer, the Start menu reliability, and fixing virtualization issues. Here is the changelog: [General] With today’s build, Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to version 26H2. For more information, see the Windows Insiders blog. [File Explorer] We’ve improved the visual consistency and reliability of the Copy dialog in Dark mode, including its launch experience and the expanded progress view. [Start menu] - Also available in Beta Improved reliability of Start menu reflecting newly installed or removed apps without requiring sign-out or restart. [Taskbar] Fixed an issue for Insiders using the new smaller taskbar option, where the system tray might get cut off or pushed off screen. [Settings] - Also available in Beta Improved reliability of Settings > Apps > Startup. [Virtualization] - Also available in Beta This update addresses an issue that could result in bugchecks citing HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x20001) and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E) errors after installing the latest flights on some devices during system restarts, virtual machine operations, or while running some gaming applications. You can find the official changelog for the Experimental build here and for the Beta build here.
    • I've always preferred this possibility. There is something that feels good about the idea that all matter in the universe will eventually come back together and maybe even result in another big bang. The idea that the universe would fizzle out over the eons and forever drift apart is a little depressing. I realize it is not logical to let a basic human desire for life to have a grand everlasting meaning change the way I feel about a scientific theory, but I am human, so that is how I feel :-).
