Printer Sharing Doesn't Seem To Work

I have a Lexmark Z640 printer attached to my Windows Vista Home Premium x64 machine which I have set to share the Printer over my workgroup. I've already checked all of the workgroup details and everything is correct, also file sharing isn't a problem.

However on my XP Machines I can see the Lexmark Printer. Install the drivers and send a print job and it shows up in the Vista print queue however Vista immediately deletes the print jobs without even attempting to print them. What is going on?

I'm using the Latest Driver, Event Viewer shows no problems. The Printer is connected through USB. It worked fine on Windows XP and OpenSUSE when they were sharing the printer over the workgroup.

Is printing from a 64bit to 32bit machine is different... that is the unknown for me. everything else sounds like it is configured correctly.

Check the drivers tab for the printer - add the 32-bit driver and reinstall on the XP machine. See if that works.

is this not a known issue? don't you need a patch for both vista and xp?

i tried sharing a xp printer and neither of my vista laptops could see it

I haven't heard of such patch. However if it was sent via Windows Update I have all of the latest patches for all of my Operating Systems:

Windows Vista Sp1 - With All Patches

Windows XP Sp3 - With All Patches

I can also confirm it's not service pack related as it wasn't working on Vista RTM or XP Sp2.

we had this issue at work and computers needed to be patched, if you google it, loads of people have had the same issue

I've searched google and yes there are a lot people with the same problem. However I'm yet to find the solution or patch. If you know what I require please could you point me in the right direction, thanks.

This is a known issue with x64 Server 2003, so I'm not surprised to read that it may affect Vista also.

Are there any work arounds with this then? Because it's a real inconvinience to be copying all of the files over to this computer to print every time.

i heard there is a patch, but have not seen it, but yeah i can't get my vista laptops to see my xp machine's shared printer

Just out of interest, have you enabled printer sharing in network sharing centre? Also try disable the password? Let me know if it works.

Yes it's set to enabled.

Turn off anything that resembles a software firewall.

I tried that initially and it didn't work, I'm beginning to think it's bad Lexmark drivers which wouldn't suprise me. I may change printers when the ink runs out next, but still I'll keep trying to get this to share properly.

Just to let you know, I have a new printer now (HP F2128) and sharing the printer and printing to it works fine. I guess it was sloppy Lexmark Vista drivers then.
