Sequel is Being Made

x0ppqg.jpg

Why? That's all we want to know, why? Screen Daily says this morning that there is a sequel to Donnie Darko not just planned, but actually happening. If you haven't seen Donnie Darko then spoilers follow.

S. Darko will pick up seven years after the death of Donnie, with youngest Darko Samantha, now 18, and her best friend Corey being plagued by bizarre visions while on a roadtrip to Los Angeles.

Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, is not involved in any official capacity and directing duties will instead be taken over by Chris Fisher (Nightstalker). Daveigh Chase, who played Samantha in Kelly's film, will reprise her role, and be joined by Ed Westwick, Briana Evigan and Justin Chatwin.

Again, we ask, why? If ever there were a film less demanding of a sequel, it's Donnie Darko. It tied its story up quite neatly, bringing it absolutely full circle. There were no loose ends. We don't even remember what Samantha did. Of course, a film can't be judged on quality until it's seen, but we fail to see the reason for a sequel's existence ? other than, y'know, money.

UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko, billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights.

Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son Of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2) and Justin Chatwin (Dragon Ball).

Ash Shah's Silver Nitrate and Newmarket Capital are producing. Los Angeles-based Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct. The budget is pegged around $10m.

The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Fisher said in a statement: "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality."

Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.

Simon Crowe of Velvet Octopus added: "I think there is a new generation of cinema-goers who will be very excited to see this film."

Crowe quipped to ScreenDaily: "Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits."

The project starts shooting May 18.

[Source and Source]

The only reason why I liked Donnie Darko is because it treated the source material (ie. time travel, paradoxes etc) with pretty good respect. And because what's his name was in it, before he got "big" (I couldn't spell his last name if you paid me)

The first movie was a bomb because of when it was released (right near 9/11) not because it was a bad movie mind you. It was still a very intelligent, very stylized and artsy movie. But it was also very dark, and for some people the ending was just not acceptable (the main character dying, not being saved etc) - but it couldn't have ended any other way as per the setup of the whole movie. If he didn't die, the bubble universe and the main universe woulda went byebye after all :D

S. Darko takes place in 1995, 7 years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko's younger sister, Samantha, who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance.[2] When she and her best friend Corey are plagued by bizarre visions, they set off on a road trip to Los Angeles,[3] following Frank the Rabbit's ghost. They arrive at a small town in the midst of a meteorite crash and begin to see the future. They then return to where it all happened in Donnie Darko, and change what happened.
