Minutes away! We're in a movie theater in swish Roppongi Hills, waiting for the Metal Gear Solid 4 press conference, marking the official completion of the title. Hideo Kojima will be on hand to talk about the game as well as Sony's Kaz Hirai. Kojima will be playing through MGS4 as well. For forty minutes. On a giant movie screen. Wowzers.

Check out the liveblog for all the action!

From the live blog so far:

A buzzer just sounded! Literally. The lights have gone down and I'm in the dark. Good thing I have an illuminated MacBook Pro, amirite. There's an ad for Sony phones and now Uniqlo. Just like before a movie. There's a funny no smoking ad with MGS theme exclamation points. Hahaha, now there are a bunch of phoney MGS themed ads like for guns and stuff. Great stuff.

Watching the MGS4 opening on a huge movie screen in full Dolby Digital sound. Beautiful stuff. It starts with Old Snake wearing a hooded outfit in the back of a truck. The sound is truly amazing. The credits role as it goes from gameplay to unable. Great mix of game play and cut scenes.

If you are thinking of purchasing MGS4, you really ought to play it in a movie theater.

Man, we just watched a killer in-game shootout and credits are STILL GOING.

Fumiaki Tanaka, Konami honcho, has taken the stage, talking about how the game is going on sale in the age of casual games. He's saying how the game will make its release date.

"MGS4 has great graphics, gameplay and music," says Tanaka. "Everything." He's talking about the power of the PS3. How they want to make more great games. Now he's talking about the special Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 console.

The game will go on sale as scheduled and there will be big advertising campaigns and tie-ups.

Tanaka just introduced Kojima.

Kojima has taken the stage, saying that the game is finished. "It was a difficult game to make," he says. "It took a long time to finish." Since the game was the last in the series, the staff had to deal with that challenge. The PS3 hardware and HD game also presented challenges. Also the worldwide release.

"I thought about giving up," says Kojima. "But I had to finish it for the fans."

"Now, there is a casual boom," he says.

He's talking about taking risks, how it's important to take risks. How risks are important for the future of gaming.

"I'm not thinking of a Renaissance," he says, "but I'd like a return to gaming." Kojima has left the stage.

Watching the first PS3 MGS4 television ad. It shows scenes from the game. And a kid wrapped on in it, ignoring the phone.

Kaz Hirai has taken the stage, congratulating Konami and Kojima on finishing the game.

Hirai says he ended up playing the game for 2 hours and he didn't even know that much time had passed. "It's one of those games that you can get wrapped up in," says Hirai.

"Konami and Sony are taking this worldwide," says Hirai. "We are backing up MGS4's advertising."

Hirai mentions the special Metal Gear PLAYSTATION 3.

Hirai encourages folks to try out the game and the PS3, congratulates Konami again.

Now there's a photo opp. I take a pic. I shall post it later!

Oh! The English trailer, complete with MOVIE TRAILER GUY VOICE. Hey, this is pretty neat.

It's like a mega blockbuster movie trailer, complete with MOVIE VOICE GUY saying "This Summer"...

Now, Kojima is going to play through the game. For forty minutes. On a giant movie screen. Think about that.

Spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, Regain energy drink. In-game. Kojima stops the demo, drinks a bottle of it, says it gives you energy. Spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, in-game iPod, spoiler, spoiler, listening to the original retro Metal Gear song, playing with it, changing it to JPop, playing the game with Jpop, spoiler, spoiler.

Spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, in-game iPod, spoiler, spoiler, listening to the original retro Metal Gear song, playing with it, changing it to JPop, playing the game with Jpop, spoiler, spoiler, , spoiler, spoiler, monkey in diaper, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler...

The game looks really nice on a movie screen.

Spoiler, "purchasable" customizable weapons (don't know if this is DLC or unlockable or what), spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, customizable Octocamo, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler,

Spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, in-game store where you can buy awesome guns, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler...

And the 40 minute demo is over. I cannot recommend playing this game in a movie theater enough.

Now, producer Kenichiro Imaizumi has taken the stage. Today's surprise is...

An ad for Regain energy drink. With Snake. Old Snake drinks the energy drink and becomes young. It goes on sale in Japan starting June 10th.

There's also a MGS4 duck alarm clock going on sale at the end of July.

Also, an official MSG4 Sony cell phone. MGS4 Salaryman cell phone game.

The MGS4 branding continues! There's also an in-game MGS4 branded MOTORCYCLE from motorcycle maker Triumph, the folks who made the bike Tom Cruise rode in Mission Impossible.

Remember that Assassin's Solid trailer? You can dress up as Altair in game. Watching a video letter from Jade Raymond. She's saying congrats, etc.

There will be MGS3 shirts from UNIQLO with designs by Logan Media, Power Grapfix and one more.

In Game, swimsuit model Akina Minami appears. Akina takes the stage, and talks with Kojima. Akina is a big Metal Gear fan, and Kojima says she's really good at Metal Gear. "I love Metal Gear so much," says Akina, "And I was thrilled to be in the game."

Now they're talking about Metal Gear fans around the world.

There's a map of the world and they're talking about launches around the world.

Last message from Kojima, "We've put the last 21 years of know how and experience and sense into this game. That's how we made it." He telling us that the game drops next month and thanks us for coming! A short film goes up with all the game's characters. There's a behind the scences clip that shows the team working on the game, arguing, talking about the project, finishing the game, having a office party and shooting a champagne cork into the ceiling,

The screen goes black and the voice actor who does Ocelot comes and saying the event is over, but something's in place for the launches in NYC, Akihabara and LA. And then asks something like, what about the sequel.

And that's it! Stick in a fork in us, we are done.

:woot: I knew Altair would be an unlockable

Awman hype overload :(

Metal Gear Solid 4 Intro Movie

That's what the title on Gamevideos says, in this, the fifth clip to spill out of the post-MGS4 wrap party in Tokyo today. This one's apparently the game's opening cinematic, which for anyone high on love of Kojima's militaristic ponderings but short on patience will be some pretty hot hotcakes about now. Nothing looks terribly spoilerrific, but hey, since some people can't whisper "MGS4" without it being tagged a spoiler, consider yourselves warned.

Clip from the intro: http://kotaku.com/389827/metal-gear-solid-4-intro-movie

^ This one was actually shown a few years back, or at least parts of it were. It's all nice and polished now!

It's NOT the full intro to MGS4, just a clip before you enter the Eastern Battlefield :)

David Hayters voice is brilliant... He even sounds rougher now for older snake.

New, New, New MGS4 Trailers

The MGS4 wrap party in Japan today wasn't just about motorbikes and posing for photos. It was about new commercials, too! Four new ones were shown off, one the main, badass theatrical trailer (featuring the MOVIE GUY), one featuring energy drinks, one featuring a mobile phone, and the other...a lady, her cat and a strangely dust-free PS3. Theatrical trailer's above, the other three, after the clicky-click.

4 new videos: http://kotaku.com/389818/new-new-new-mgs4-trailers

These are great because of MOVIE GUY voice

OMG, MGS4 just pushed every game I'm playing and looking forward to out of my mind :woot:

They BETTER use Movie Guy trailers for on TV - That would kick ASS!

daaaamn, looks so good, can not wait!!!!!, SNAAAAAAKE

Whats the deal with snake becoming young snake with that juice!!!

I think it's just Hideo joking around again :p

ps. People say NW's stats are going down just now? When this is out I'll be outta here for a while

Another take on the event!

Konami Holds Metal Gear Solid 4 Completion Event

Pics and details straight from Tokyo.

by John Tanaka

US, May 12, 2008 - Metal Gear Solid 4 is complete. That much was learned a week ago via a development blog that revealed to the world that the game had gone gold.

Today, Konami is making things a bit more official through an official completion ceremony for the game. The two hour press and insider event is being held from 1:00PM to 3:00PM at the theater complex in Tokyo's Roppongi Hills business/shopping/tourist district (you can get a lot done at Roppongi Hills -- Konami actually had its office here a couple of years back).

metal-gear-solid-4-event-story-20080512085127082-000.jpg

Check the media section below for more images.

The itinerary for the event calls for a first glimpse at the game's Japanese commercials, an airing of the game's seventeen minute introduction, all followed by greetings from high ranking insiders like Sony Computer entertainment Japan president Kaz Hirai and Metal Gear director/producer/etc Hideo Kojima.

The main part of the event is a lengthy gameplay session where Kojima will play the game for a full forty minutes.

Finally, Konami will close off the event with some business talk about the collaborations it has planned for the game along with a talk event with a few guests.

We'll be delivering new details as they emerge from the event along with tons of pics of Kojima standing next to that sexy Japanese MGS4 premium PS3. Keep checking back!

-------------------

UPDATE: 1:15PM

The event kicks off with commercials for cell phones, then uniqlo clothing, then Rega energy drinks.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON!?

Next, one of those no smoking, no talking splashes you always see before movies only MGSified, complete with the alert sound effect and finsihing with This is Metal Gear Solid 4. Enjoy with Us.

Next, a commercial for Praying Mantis unmanned surveilence systems. Next, a spot for Werewolf. Next, a sexy spot one for presumably the Octocam camoflauge.

Ahh, I get it... the ads promised in the itinerary were actually mock ads for Metal Gear Solid 4 technology, not ads for the game. Clever.

These sports are wonderfully produced, mixing CG and live footage.

Next, an original Dolby Digital splash.

And finally, the start of the MGS4 introduction.

Presumably, all this was done to make attendees feel like they're eactually watching a movie. And since Kojima wants us to feel like we're watching a movie, and we're sure you want to experience the Metal Gear Solid 4 intro for yourself, we're going to sign out for the duration of the 17 minute intro.

UPDATE: 1:30

That intro was all realtime and mixed with interactive and non-interactive elements, with more of the non-interactive. You've actually seen much of it in past trailers, but we'll keep quiet on the details. Just know that it's absolutely awesome

Next, Fumiaki Tanaka, Konami president. He speaks about how Konami took the challenge to make a hardcore game like Metal Gear Solid 4 despite the movement towards casual games of late. He believes they were able to use the power of the PS3 to deliver the developer's vision as is.

Now he's recapping the limited edition and also mentions that Konami will be working on a number of collaborations aside from this.

He turns the mic to Kojima.

Everyone claps for Kojima, who comes out in a gray and black casual suit! Stylin!

UPDATE: 1:45

Kojima notes that MGS4 represents a number of challenges, from dealing with the PS3 hardware to going with HD visuals and surround sound.

He also mentions some sort of analogy likening the development of the game to traveling to the moon apparently on the starship PS3. We're going to have to look at that one a bit more before quoting him, though.

Next, actual commercials for the game! Some show footage from the game, others are more focused on teh PS3 hardware. Four commercials in all are shown. They are just like other PlayStation brand commercials, with the THUD sound and PlayStation logo at the beginning.

The commercials were apparently made with the cooperation of Sony.

Next, Kaz Hirai. He relates how he got a call from Kojima in which he was asked to see MGS4 before showing it to everyone else. He got to see the game played directly by Kojima.

He says that Sony will work with Konami worldwide on the marketing of the game. Outside of the hardware bundles, Sony is planning three days of MGS4 features on the PlayStation Network. We presume these are video features.

Next, a photo session with the PS3 and Kojima, Hirai and Tanaka.

UPDATE: 1:50

Next, commercials for presumably the US. These feel more like movie spots -- definitely more intense than the Japanese spots.

Following this, a lengthy forty minute gameplay presentation played live by a staff member as Kojima provides commentary. We're going to once again go dark for this so that you get to experience the game for yourself.

UPDATE: 2:14

Holy Kojima! This gameplay session is hot!

A couple of non-spoiler bits from the gameplay session. Kojima showed what appears to be some tie-up promotions. He had Snake select Regain 24 energy drink from the item menu. The drink appears as a high res 3D model, complete with a full product description (Kojima and his assistant actually took out their own real Regain drinks and drank them, causing the majority of the press to violate the no photography rule).

The next promotion was an iPod. There's actually an iPod item in the game, again shown in a high res 3D model. Kojima had Snake pick up a CD item from the stage then play it back in his iPod. You can listen to the songs that you pick up along the way as you play the game. Snake's assistant can be seen dancing to the music when you're in the item screen.

UPDATE: 2:32

The gameplay demonstration ended with a showing of the Tanegashima which appears to release tornados on the battle field. Kojima says he'd just showed us 1/12.5 of the game.

Producer Kenichiro Imaizumi appears next to Kojima to talk about the collaborations for the game -- some of the stuff that was shown in the gameplay session and mentioned above.

He first shows off an ad showing off Snake drinking Regain. MGS4 Regain will be available at convenience stores on 6/14 with a cell phone screen cleaner included.

Next, Ga-Ko alarm clock -- an alarm shaped like a rubber ducky. Yes, this does appear to have something to do with the game.

Next, a Sony Ericson celphone -- model W62S. This cell phone is used by Vamp and other characters in the game.

Next, footage of Snake riding a motorcycle. Is this next product an MGS4 motorcycle!? Actually, it's just a Triumph motorcycle, which appears in the game.

Next, a collaboration with Assassin's Creed! The April Fool's Joke was true! Snake will be able to dress up just like in the April Fool's trailer once he's done something special in the game!

Jade Raymond delivers a video message, congratulating the Kojima Productions team.

Finally, a collaboration with Uniqlo clothing for t-shirts and other items. Konami hopes to release these worldwide.

UPDATE: 2:46

Next, the best collaboration of them all! Gravure idol Akina Minami will appear as posters in the game. This applies to the worldwide versions of the game, marking Minami's debut on the world scene.

Finally, Kojima reveals plans for a tour that will take the staff throughout the world around launch, touching on cities like, Tokyo, London, Madrid, Milano, Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

UPDATE: 3:00

Kojima offers some parting words, then shares short trailer, along with some footage taking us inside the Kojima Productions Studio for the game's development.

The event has come to an end, so we'll be closing off this mini blog here. Check back later tonight for more details along with pictures from the event.

But wait! There's more! Just before telling everyone to leave, a voice appears in the background hinting at a surprise on launch day. "Akihabara, New York, LA -- worldwide live broadcast."

Then the same voice mentions some sort of project, along with the word "sequel."

Hmm....

We're not sure what Konami and Kojima are hinting at, but we hope they let us know, at least about the launch day surprise, some time before 6/12.

Audio, I can almost see you having a stroke 'cause of this game :D

Quite possibly, I've been waiting for YEARS.

I still remember the day I bought Pro Evolution Soccer I think it was (Konami game), and it came with a MGS1 Demo.

Honestly, I think I completed the demo about 20 times.

People are going on about custom-in game/unlockable music and the likes? :/

You Really Did Get Assassin's Creed In My MGS4!

thumb463x_snakecreed.jpg

That Ubisoft/Kojima April Fool's joke was pretty elaborate! Snake running around MGS4 dressed as Altair, looking for all the world like it was actually in the game...so would it surprise you to hear that it wasn't really a gag? Yeah, that's right. It was announced at the MGS4 wrap party today that MGS4 players will indeed be able to unlock an Assassin's Creed outfit for Snake (we won't tell you how), which were it not for the silver moustache and trademark cigarette would have you thinking Altair himself had time-travelled his way into the final Metal Gear title. How's this happening? Why's this happening? Who knows, the mind boggles.

Now just let Kojima fix AC2

By the way word is the 40 min demonstration played out (which includes the main 17 min intro to the game I *believe*) will be posted at somepoint. (I think it's an off-screen capture though, so not direct feed).

I don't know If I'll be able to avoid watching it :( Ah well, I hope it's posted tomorrow when im on holiday and CAN'T watch it

MAJOR SPOILERS

First 13 minutes of the game. Watch at your own peril.

    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛
    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
