Hey guys

ok

well

I have gone over the cap on my net...yes...we all kno how annoying it is. Now ever since we got his new laptop it sometimes when starting up the comp... (running XP) when the lil bar is going from side to side with the xp splash screen it feezes on that. Now he thinks its because i have gone over the cap and the speeds been reduced.

But I need to prove to him that no internet does not affect the starting up of the computer.

please bring me some solid evidence to prove him wrong.

like his side is pretty muh saying a person with no internet could not start up their comp.

please help em guys, if you can find some insane article that is credible that would rollhim lol this would be great. also he might be redcuing my net space and i def dont want that :p

thanks guys

Your computer will not connect to the internet until a user clicks his name and logins into windows.

There is no internet connectivity what so ever whilst your windows is loading. Simple way to prove it I guess would be to go to another computer that loads windows and disconnect the cable, and your windows shall still load fine =/

I agree ^ but I'd say to turn off everything net related so he can't stomp around claiming it was still the internet. And watch the hard drive fail when you do it :p

It's possible he was brought up on mainframe type things, where you had dummy terminals that were literally just input/output for the one single machine. I know a few like this and it's *really* hard to get them to think of their computers as being independent from the server.

I would assume that his laptop has a button to turn on/off the wireless card, correct? If so, press the button so the light goes out (this means it's off), and unplug any ethernet cables attached, if applicable. Then explain that he is in no way, shape, or form connected to the internet, and have him reboot the laptop. If the bar freezes, this should prove to him that it's not the internet that's doing it, but something being loaded during startup.

This can help him better understand the boot process for NT Based systems (NT, 2000, XP, etc.)

Pac Man

Actually, that would be Doom. :D

while the internet directly won't effect the starting of the computer, sometimes if it has a hard time getting an IP address, that can sometimes cause a slower boot than normal.

That takes effect after the login has been completed.

As everybody else has said here, loading up your OS wont touch the net untill you login into an account BUT something like spyware running as a service or whatever may create connections to the net - just a random idea.

I would also tell him that hes too retarded to use the laptop from now on.

    • Steam Next Fest returns with thousands of new demos to try out by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Valve has been routinely kicking off demo festivals on Steam for years now, and the second drop of 2026 has just opened its doors. It's a great opportunity for any PC gamers to find some interesting games before they release. The June edition of Steam Next Fest is a week-long digital festival including gameplay slices from a large number of indie developers, though a few major publishers are involved this time too. Interested players can use the Next Fest hub page's various sorting and filtering options to easily sort through the hordes of demos available. The top buttons offer quick access to separate and important sorting options, including "By Genre, By Theme, By Feature," with each one offering more granular settings when clicked. At the same time, the built-in Steam tags system is also available below every page to discover new games more quickly. As always, logging in will also enable Steam gamers to utilize Valve's recommendation algorithms to find game demos they might like, specifically, depending on their past play and purchase histories. This time there is even a toggle now to swap between getting a random and personalized selection as Valve collects more data on the available demos. The Charts section is where you can find the most popular demos on the platform right now, offering up the most hyped titles in a simple list. Right at the kickoff, Mistfall Hunter, Empulse, Echoes of Aincrad, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Over the Hill, Mortal Shell II, and more are trending. Expect this list to change as the week progresses. This edition of the Steam Next Fest is slated to end on June 22 at 10 AM PT. Valve's latest event is now open, and it can be accessed by going to the dedicated hub page here.
    • I lived and breathed MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger. Going to the mess.be website (still online with no changes since 2013) to download display pictures etc. I was a beta tester for Messenger Plus! and spent quite a lot of time on the MsgPlus! forums (a read-only copy is still online at https://shoutbox.menthix.net) Some old Neowin articles also https://www.neowin.net/news/messenger-plus-350/ good times but how time flies
    • Well i'll look into a docking station if needed and use that.    Normally i don't usually have all the drives connected at once,  usually once a month to sync the latest files, and then they go back in there storage area
