"Gay" Player Name Banned By Xbox Live

Recommended Posts

We don't really know what their aims are, but I suspect they want to make money from as many people as possible. Therefore they need to keep their service as inoffensive to as many people as possible.

 i hope so

Why?

.....

He's probably one of those gay people that feel the need to defend themselves any chance they get and treat everyone like crap because any small comment is turned into a civil rights issue. They really are females trapped in male bodies....

I don't have anything against gay people because it is a waste of time trying anything, plus, if they are happy, just let them be. Everybody deserves to be happy and orientation doesn't matter. Now, I was raised a certain way so I am not exactly advocating homosexuality but I also am not going to try to beat down on a person for being gay....that's just immature.

Just women?

You can't blame people for feeling the way they do because they were raised to think like that.

Or came to the belief independently of how they were raised which I think is true for most people.

I'm not anti-gay either, I just think different opinions on sexuality are normal and natural.

As long as he doesn't have to pay for the name change, then whats the big deal. It's just a gamertag. It's not the end of the world to have to change it.

Also, for those of you talking about the "correct" definitions of words here is a little bit of knowledge: Language influences dictionaries, not the other way around. Words are continually changing "formal definitions" based on how they are used in everyday language. As long as the word's meaning is universally understood and agreed upon, then it has effectively changed.

Go find out what the word 'Gay' means.

It was hijacked by homosexual Men.

Gay means happy, so the user name is happier than gay.

Yet again, you got morons telling us what to do.

So true! The fact of the matter is that MANY words in the English language have dual meaning and have NOT changed because someone made an arbitrary decision that the derogatory meaning (of a word) is the only use or meaning of that word! Strewth!

Here's the thing.

If Microsoft's own policies don't determine the name to be offensive then it should stand. If players have a problem with it then they can deal with their own ignorance and find someone else to play with.

Microsoft should develop and stick to their own guidelines and rules otherwise the players out there will find something wrong with a lot of the names out there and it will get out of control.

Why do you hope so? :s

Ugh, I have to correct myself on this one. I didn't read the article, and therefore I didn't know he was actually gay. I thought he used the name as a derogatory statement against homosexuals. My bad! I take back my "hope so" statement!!

I wouldn't need to, plenty of others would jump in before me.

i think often a lot of women have certain affects and men have certain affects, and many people of both genders don't. you know, men acting macho, or women acting girly.

i dont think its wrong when people say gay men often have female affects. gay people often admit that themselves. other gay men don't have any affects.

I agree with him having to change it... I do hope that he does not have to pay for the name change. On that note.. I do believe that he was trying to go out of his way for "some" purpose when he chose that for his gamertag. I just hope that it remains fair across the board... I do not need to know the sexual preference of any player on live... gay or straight... I am all for the dont ask dont tell gamertag

It's MS's service and they can change whatever they want, if he didn't like what they did then he doesn't have to subscribe the service. I am fine with him being gay or whatever, but it's like kicking lion in his nuts you're inviting trouble.

Also as far as I see they did really good job telling him what the problem is and what the next procedure is. It wasn't Microsoft who had the problem but it's the community that had a problem with the name.

I was wondering what he ment by gayer and serched online, here's what I found it's pretty much the same thing as being gay. But whatever it is community say's they didn't like the gamertag and should be changed then so be it.

gayplay

adj. gay?er, gay?est

1. Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex.

2. Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.

3. Bright or lively, especially in colora gay, sunny room.i>

4. Given to social pleasures.5. Dissolute; licentious.

I assumed that once i called Microsoft they would straighten things out.

So to speak...

But really I think this is an overreaction probably by someone at MS. They didn't clarify the meaning of "gay", they didn't stand by the reasoning that it is not actually insulting.

Would I be allowed to be called "StraightGamer"? If so - where's the difference?

 i hope so

I wouldnt normally agree but in this case I do with my reason being his addition of this sentence

I hope I'm not the only person who finds this don't ask, don't tell policy disgusting... eek

as MarkJensen stated on the 1st page, hes making it sound like some big civil rights issue or whatever and it really isn't. That sort of whining gets up me, and he should have known it'd be controversial to begin with so I don't really have any sympathy in this case. I'd be inclined to feel more sorry for him if he come off as approaching it with a slightly more leveled perspective.

It has the potential to be severely abused, and by blocking it Microsoft if protecting the community from this abuse and themselves from an otherwise inevitable lawsuit .

Maybe the lawsuit comes because they ARE blocking it? I guess they can't win. Who knows...

    • Stop asking people that. It's a "No True Scotsman" argument in that you are attempting to discredit the opinions of a person by Attacking the Messenger. The reason that these are logical fallacies is the TRUTH is based on facts as supported by evidence. Nothing else. So, always debate the facts with evidence to reach the truth. Once you learn to do this, you'll be able to recognize when people are fearmongering and lying to you for their own selfish ends.
    • It doesn't matter if you didn't directly hear it from person X or Y. Every one of your statements comes straight from the racist, skinhead, anti-immigrant, be afraid of everything, "they are all taking our jobs", etc. etc. mouthpieces. That's where Farag and Putin heard it from too...and used it against the UK. So, while you keep disavowing the people who publicly peddled that position, you keep proving over and over again that those lies influenced you into being tricked when the Brexit vote came around too. In fact, your final sentence makes it crystal clear that it was the racist/anti-immigrant lies you fell and voted for, since you stated that you didn't have an issue with the economic trade issues with the EU. Ahem. To be clear, all of these LIES are EONS old, mate. They are the same fearmongering lies peddled to the same ignorant, gullible cowards by the same charlatans, snake-oil salesmen, and would be demagogues who've been doing this since caveman Ugh lied about his slightly different neighbor in order to steal his land. And, finally, you answered your own previous question. The reason that the EU isn't clamoring to bring the UK back is that they have had enough of people who would rather shoot themselves in the foot than get over their "insecurity issues". It's the same reason the entire world is moving away from the USA as fast as it can...
