"Gay" Player Name Banned By Xbox Live

Recommended Posts

My question is, so what?

Seems black and white too me. You can whinge and moan about how things are unfair and how microsoft are unfair and bias but its not going to change anything. It is there software, they set the rules.. If you don't like it, tough.

He was asking for trouble creating a name like that and he knows it, attention seeking ******. THEN he went to the media. Actually talking about it in this thread is giving him what he wants.

'shudder' oh the stupidity...

+ prancingunicorns

So Microsoft hates gay people? Is that what they mean to say again here? Brilliant.

My god, some people are just so thick headed. No, microsoft doesn't hate gay people. They are simply banning an account that's accumulated a large amount of negative feedback. Microsoft, like any corporation, isn't in the practice of "hating" their paying customers, quite the opposite. This guy was trying to stick his sexuality in everyone's face with his name (and going by how he handled this i can only imagine the crap coming out of his mouth in-game), people complained and Microsoft acted. Stop acting like this is some political issue, gay or straight doesn't matter. This is about protecting the xbox live community as a whole.

So, you would rather them ignore their community?

It depends on the definition of community.

If the community you refer to can even be partially defined as those (lets say approximately) 50% of the other "gamers" (in quotes because in their case I use the term lightly) that I encounter way more than I prefer on Live while playing MP games then I would have to say Yes. This is the same people that constantly spew truly despicable racial hatred and racially inspired derogatory terms, and/or the same people who posses an overall general lack of respect towards others (and as a result themselves), then again, the answer to your question is a resounding Yes... In fact I would rather MS ignore the community on most everything, never-mind this.

And let me state since I know this comment has the potential to raise hell, that I have indeed met some very cool individuals while playing on Live. As I said above the experience is usually a 50-50 one. However if I had to sum up my overall Live experience, unfortunately due to the nature of the negatives I do experience, those negatives cannot help but overpower the positives.

He says he spends "a lot of time muting people on Halo3" due to his name. Then he says "I hope I'm not the only person who finds this don't ask, don't tell policy disgusting", trying to make this into a civil rights issue.

The fact is, among kids (my own included), the term "gay" is used as a derogatory comment. Not even necessarily associated with homosexuality. Things like "that movie sounds so gay [boring, dull]", or "playing tag is so gay [geared toward little kids, not teenagers]".

They would remove obviously offending terms, such as "the N word". And, if this guy is muting a lot of people because of harassment from the name, well, it obviously is becoming an issue.

He is free to change his name to "DethKi77erRox" or "PrancingUnicorns" or whatever, and keep on playing.

LOL, the homosexual community made it a point to hijack words in their pushing "rights" issue. I really am glad society has comeback with using the word gay to mean something derogatory. Gay meant "happy" "jolly" cira 1930, Gay became "homosexual" cira 1990's, and now cira 2005 on, "lame" "boring" "wrong" "stupid". I believe it's everyone's right to choose what and whom they have sex with. I do not support the homosexual agenda.

Within their rights, Microsoft, they did the right thing.

Firstly going outa ya way to express ya sexuality in a nickname is stupid, especially in a wider community. THe legal team did the right thing here, being that if the kid got abused and harassed, MS would and could be implemented also and be sued for not acting in The Duty Of Care towards the gamer.

One point though, why go out with a nickname expressing ones sexuality? Me, i have never seen a gamer tag, or even a forums login such as 'hetrohumpergamer'

Its passe' and stupid to do, IMHO and prob by the majority of the community.

Being gay or straight is fine, but to be blatant about expressing ya sexuality can have reprocussions no matter what side of the table you sit on.

Massive QFT

Can't he just argue that he used gay as its original meaning, 'happy'?

Not exactly as meanings change over time. Honestly, I don't understand the idea some people have that words will continue to have the exact same meaning down the road. There is no "set in stone" definition. If history could teach us anything, it's that our languages evolve over time as new words are introduced and old words no longer hold their meaning for whatever reasons.

The word "gay" has seemed to be turned into an offensive term used to insult someone or simply describe something as bad. Hell, even a couple gay/lesbian people I know use the word in the very same manner.

Overall though, I think the whole thing is pretty stupid. It's not hurting anyone at all. Let him keep his damn name. Seriously, is anyone going to end their subscription because someone has that username?

Though, if he can't have it, he should have fun with creating his new name. "ilikemen" "boys4me" "fruitycake" "secksmyhole" "rainbowcrotch" "stevejobs" "bjobs4u" etc.

The possibilities are endless! :woot:

Meh, if you ask me MS are right, and I hope they continue to crack down on other attention seeking names.

I hate it when people whine about abuse and they run about with names like, "AZIANGAMER", "I'MBLACK", "I'MGAY", "GOTHS4FTW", ect.

Abuse isn't justifiable, but if you have common sense you'll understand it's not possible to completely eradicate it, and if you run around with attention seeking names, you'll be a far larger target on the abusers horizon.

Just use a "normal" name god damnit. Yeah "normal" names can easily be abused as well, but don't erect a huge flag above your head reigning your social status/skin colour/beliefs and then expect griefers NOT to mess about with you, more than they will "JoeGamer14".

Unfortunately the online world is full of explotation and abuse, adopt to adapt with it, it's the best we can do right now to get through some of the crap (Y)

Attention seeking cry-babies whining about abusive gamers - All of them should just be banned, end of.

ps. I'm not mixing up attention seeking names, and humorous names - I get a good chuckle out of some names that don't really cause any harm (Like McStabbyStabStab the rogue on WoW - Attention seeking for lol's, but not abusive to anyone). I wouldn't adopt a daft name, full stop, but I'm not saying eradicate every funny name as well.

 Sorry, that one just made me laugh so much

I don't see the problem, although i wouldn't take the name offensively. If Microsoft get enough complaints about a name then they have to take action, you can't blame the company if people playing it have a problem with the name.

Also people complaining about it having a different meaning are just trying to be difficult, if I went around shouting out gay at people I don't think they would take it as me calling them 'happy'. (most probably, I would end up being beaten to a pulp as well)

    • For a guy who claims to hate Farage and the ignorant, gullible, rightwing racist skinheads sponsored by Putin that his lies represent, you sure are quoting them time and time and time again, mate. I guess you're conveniently ignoring the fact that your country and commonwealth just happened to work much better when it was still part of the E.U.? Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.
    • Do you live in the U.K? Do any of the people here that are against the UK leaving the E.U, live in the U.K? If not then why are you bothered? If you do live here then it is a different thing . Brexit was a good idea, should have done it years before, it was done badly, but the idea was good. You are saying the same thing as remainers do, oh we did what Putin wanted, we listened to the lies and Farage. I hate Farage and never believed most of what he said, certainly did not believe the £350m a week for the NHS. But we did pay a lot of money to the E.U and yes some of it came back, but what is the point of paying it out for only some of it to come back? Get out of the E.U, no money to them and in theory we can use the money to do things in the country. I said in theory, but our governments are a total and complete waste of space. No matter what colour rosette they wear. You and others say it was a mistake and yet the two main parties in the U.K are not looking at rejoining the EU, I wonder why that is? I was not tricked by anyone. Makes no odds now, we are out and have been for 10 years, what we need is a decent government to run the country. All they do is shout at each other like a load of kids and seems to do nothing and make this country more into a police and nanny state. Getting more like China all the time.

    • Yeah... The root of my comment, ostensibly, is how to spin the story via the actual technical merits of the solution! * Decentralized (aka federated) solution with built-in encrypted ephemeral message transport, * Transport via Relays (intermediary servers) with no message archival, * Second configurable pathway are actual email servers (if DNS records are programmed accordingly) via IMAP protocols carriage, * "Chat-over-Email" is the design pattern adopted; it can either leverage full-blown Email Server (must use the INBOX folder) to exchange all received messages/edits/reactions (so be weary of notifications overloads) [best practice is creating a separate email acct used explicitly for federated chat purposes!] or leverage its built-in Relay Server mechanism which actually resides on-device (by default but can be configured otherwise), * By virtue of be a decentralized/federated model, all other intermediary servers who may pass-along messages (while the recipient's final relay/device is inaccessible) cannot snoop on the messages due to the encrypted nature of contents. The intermediaries may, however, analyze the metadata due to the simple fact that routing mechanisms require hints for relay destinations. Unfortunately, whomever is posting about DeltaChat across socials are misleading with "zero metadata" claims -- especially when the Relays (according to their own technical documents) mandate the addition of chat-version metadata and other decorations in order to actually transport any message. -- Based on this summary, I'd prefer if they'd better dual-path message transport (email server add-in, federated relay engine) rather than patch-on email protocols to existing federated social media frameworks. They're frankensteining something rather than extending widely-deployed technology stacks.
