The last time i really used KDE was when using Redhat distro , even before Fedora was released. It never really grew on me but had LOTS of options to tweak and I wasn't familiar with configuring Gnome (like i didn't even knew how to edit gnome-menu at that time). and at one time i was real fan in 1999-2001 i think, when i use to make KDE bar fully transparent and it looked 'modern' .

KDE 3.* UI design for me is/was like bunch of kids fighting and eating crayons then spitting on a paper. and i wont even go with those crash noises (i know can be disabled) and the dragon (kde logo/mascot?) popping up now and then.

I read ALL the hoopla of KDE4, plasma, oxygen and all that from past year and even read Linus Torvald's slam Gnome-usability guys for being rigid in accepting tips and dumbing down the UI for user (but hey it works,anyway) and Linus admited he is KDE user and wants gnome to learn from KDE. Still that didn't sway me away from Gnome, Cause i really have got Hang-of Gnome and things like Compiz have now been able to put Gnome in another orbit making it look modern and more usable.

===============================================================================

Today. I am using Fedora9 for past days and i had a thought, 'what the hell, lets install KDE ( *sick* ) and lets see.' so i simply went [# sudo yum groupinstall "kde" ] and it installed (approx 280mb).

I feel KDE 4 is extremely rough in terms of finishing touches on GUI and its layout. but i can see where they want to grow and it looks promising for Linux users . if i knew right places to tell KDE gui guys,. I would like to point them out below screen shot's and hope they sharpen out these v rough edges.

and can any KDE users here give tips to enhance my kde-experience?, i want to give it some try.

* how to make firefox look better. its looking ugly. (i guess its not using oxygen properly, howto fix?)

* I think there is kcomposite which enables animations without need of compiz, if so, how to do that thing? (Googled, its not snappy and smooth on my shared ram Intel agp but okayish)

* where is add-remove app for KDE? would you recommend any apps to enhance kde experience? ( i think there isnt any particular kde App and i should use one provided b fedora9)

* how to install theme's, I downloaded Falco (deviant art) theme files (massive ~20mb files think they are source) how to install them, its tar.gz file. Edit (nevermind it needs lots of packages i see in requirements , why isnt kde4 by default like that? nevermind..)

* anyone got experience with http://raptor-menu.org/ ?

Regards,

Kyro.

PS: The kde-tasbar at bottom readjusted later when i again tried making it small,large etc.

and i know i must edit my signature soon for fedora 9.

this is exactly why i don't use KDE, its a GUI mess right from the start. Gnome looks so much better, even when its standardised.

Go back to Gnome or Xfce, KDE doesn't even look good when its customized, KDE was one of the most irritating things that put me off linux in general.

i really can't see how people work on KDE, its like a retarded Luna GUI all over the bloody place. good luck :D

for making firefox look at least bearable u gotta install the qt-gtk package for kde4 which used to be installed with kde 3.5.x

and yes, kde needs a lot of work.. it looks like a rip-off of OSX+Vista in many ways

I use KDE 3.5 (Kubuntu 8.04_, but I installed KDE 4 when I was running Ubuntu, and I didn't care for it too much, as the taskbar was gigantically huge.

I'll probably go to KDE 4 at some point, but not until 4.1 or later.

There are a lot of things I do like over Gnome though, at least with 3.5 - I find it more polished and better looking. (YMMV).

    • Epic Games says Unreal Engine 6 will help developers "build content faster" using AI models by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Epic Games is rolling out the latest major update to Unreal Engine 5 today, and at the same time, the company also dropped some information on the next-generation version of the product, Unreal Engine 6. This was already revealed a few weeks ago alongside the new Rocket League upgrade reveal. The company says it is combining the features of Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to create this new version of its popular media creation tool. On top of creating entire games, the new engine will also focus on letting developers operate large-scale live service titles more easily, whether by shipping content into their own ecosystems or into Fortnite. The use of large language models is also mentioned here, with Epic saying it will be a core part of the engine. "We see LLMs, generative AI models, and tools like Claude and Codex playing a central role in helping you build content faster while maintaining the creative control you need," adds the company. Here is the rundown of what's new about version 6 of Unreal Engine: With all these changes to the programming model, portability upgrades, and generative AI integration, Epic says the new version of the engine will "change a lot about how games are made." The company aims to ship Unreal Engine 6 into early access in late 2027, with a full release planned for 12-18 months later. Epic Games also dropped a lengthy blog post about the new Unreal Engine 5.8 update for game developers over here. The release is focused on delivering better performance, customization, and streamlined workflows for development teams. This will be the final major update for this version of the engine before Epic switches to focus fully on Unreal Engine 6's early access launch.
    • Watch Louis Rossmann's recent experience on YouTube about trying to get a warranty replacement from Samsung. It's crazy.
    • That is the thing, how many of these people don't realise they are using AI? If they use Google Search they have no choice but to use AI. So yes, maybe half of American adults do use and I expect a lot of Uk adults do to, but I bet most of them don't realise it. Myself, i avoid the rubbish.
    • They use FREE AI. They aren't paying for this meme-generating slopware...
    • Gotta' buy that there Rufus guy a beer if I ever meet him. He makes good stuff.
