Boost Windows Volume

So, I have a Toshiba Satellite A200-TH7. When I run Ubuntu, I can boost the WAVE volume to max and the volume is very loud, but when I run Windows Vista Ultimate (OEM) and watch a movie or video, the volume is rather quiet even though it's maxed. (Both the windows volume and speaker volume).

Any suggestions on tweaks or apps that I can use (free or open-source) to boost the windows volume?

Sound specs:

• Realtek ALC268 Software Sound; Intel High Definition Audio,
  
• Built-in Harman/Kardon? stereo speakers, Direct 3D Sound,
  
• DirectSound, DirectMusic, MIDI(playback).

You must check the volume settings for each individual application.

Double click the sound icon and click "Mixer" to see all the running programs' volume control.

That should solve your problem. If it doesn't, then double check the in built volume slider of the software. Example: Move slider all the way to the right in Windows Media Player 11.

as for the sound you could use vlc media player then when you play a dvd fiddle with the auto eq's under the audio tab and choose live or party those max out pretty nice

I use Media Player Classic and it has a volume booster and that works quite well on my laptop running Vista and XP both.

Everything's maxed, I even said that here "the volume is rather quiet even though it's maxed. (Both the windows volume and speaker volume)." so it's not a volume slider issue. I'm not that duh. Thanks though.

I like to keep my laptop as portable as possible. I have a notebook wireless mouse, and that's about it for peripherals. external speakers, even usb powered ones, aren't really an option as they are too bulky to carry around. And those speakers are waaay out of the question as they are practically desktop PC speakers, only sans power cord. But thanks though.

I have used VLC to playback DVD's, but I find that it sometimes takes too long to get going, where as the Toshiba DVD player loads up quickly and plays the dvd quickly... I guess my only choices are to either go back to Ubuntu (although going to Linux just to boost audio isn't really that good of a reason) or use VLC for all my video playback needs.

Ohhhh... I see what you're asking. If you're using your LAPTOP speakers, then it's obvious that it will still sound quiet when maxed out. Use headphones or a line in jack to an amplification device such as external speakers.

Headphones (which I use) are the portable solution.
