Precisely...which in my opinion makes it a poorly used plot device.

Other tech has been explained (sometimes to death or close to it) and we understand it. This piece of tech, however, was like a snap of the fingers and "presto", problem is solved.

Well it was either get it working in hours, or have Earth culled by the Wraith. Not a very good ending to the series no?

Just a reminder to those who have not seen the final two episodes - Vegas the 2nd to last episode airs tonight on Sci-Fi.

Just watched the Vegas episode. It wasn't awful, but seriously wtf does it have to do with anything. Could have at least explained the alternate reality rather than imply it. I would have preferred it, if they didn't play different characters, then it might have had a more SG-1 feel to it when they were going after the Trust. Certainly shows they don't care at all with useless fillers in their final five. Come to think of it, I don't think season 5 had a story arc at all. Then again, they were probably banking on the whole Dr. Weir replicator story, thanks Torri!

Thanks Torri?? Dude they got rid of her and then said oh, you can come back for a whole 1 or 2 episodes to finish up your arc. I don't blame her for turning them down either.

Yeah they really screwed her out of her spot if you ask me. They said "Atlantis needed a change" or whatever excuse they gave at the time. Bullcrap. She was a great part of Atlantis and by just getting rid of her like they did, I think that was the turning point to Atlantis's decline to being cancelled eventually.

Yeah after they got rid of her the show really took a dive. She played a great part.

Have watched them now, I didn't know they were going to be shown so soon or I would have seen them sooner.

Vegas wasn't that bad, but there could have been far far far better ways of getting the Wraith to earth for the final episode, it felt a bit off.

But as to the finale, it was highly un-epic for the last of a series, and was really kinda disappointing.

I thought at first they were taking a really bold move with what happened to Ronan, but that didn't happen.

Where were all the other ships? the whole alliance we have seen happen in Stargate, surely if something as bad as a giant ship coming to destroy earth all they ended up with was one ship to defend themselves?

Really? I expected some awesome battle scene for Atlantis to finish on, it would have been awesome to watch one last big battle.

And this wormhole drive, so they figure something out the ancients couldn't, which I suppose in some regards is not that bad.

But they figure it out and don't even show us it working, Atlantis just appears, surely seeing something happening on there end would have been cooler, its not like we didn't know they were going to appear and save the day anyway.

And wouldn't a creation such as the wormhole drive take away the factor of Stargate universe, being able to go places in very little time take away the edge of getting lost or stuck somewhere?

Oh well.

I'm assuming it is going to be the same writers that did the end of Sg-1/Atlantis that are going to be doing Universe?

Because if so I feel they are only going to drive the series into the ground more.

I believe Earth's fleet was decimated after the Ori. I think only two ships remained, and in the finale they announced another but it wasn't launched yet.

Yeah after they got rid of her the show really took a dive. She played a great part.

Atlantis has sucked since day 1... it didn't matter if she stayed, died, or quit. It's done nothing but gone downhill since they ended up on Atlantis. Sure, there have been a couple of bumps of greatness, but it wasn't enough to make up for the suckyness of the show in its entirety.

The only good thing Vegas had going for it was the soundtrack.

I for one will be glad when SG:A is off the air... yet for some reason, I know I will buy the SG:A movies when they come to DVD/BR.

The show took a dive because they canceled SG1.

well, i'd say that was part of it. by taking away SG-1 they severely limited the plots they could "continue" or play off of. if you haven't noticed by now, the Atlantis crew (and the last few seasons of SG-1) is big on re-hashing old ideas and continuations instead of actually being creative and coming up with something new

there's rarely any big story changers, just little tiny side-quests that don't matter in the long run. i like a story that progresses, not one that sits around, almost achieving stuff, and then having some "twist" at the end bring everything back to normal. overall there was very, very little progress in the big scheme of things

a story needs challenges. "go up against technologically and intelligently superior race, have shepard take on 20 guys by himself and then have McKay come in at the last second and hack an alien computer to save the day" sure it's impressive the first couple of times, but when they do it practically every single week it just gets flat-out ridiculous

people love rooting for the underdog because they can associate with it. to constantly be challenged, overcoming obstacles and achieve the impossible. That's what people desire, and that's what people want to see. Universe better have some real challenges in the story line instead of the same old re-hashed crap, or it's going to fail like Atlantis

You're making it far too complicated.

I missed a step, but I didn't want to confuse everyone. The real reason SGA was canceled was because they moved Galactica to a different day.

Sci-Fi was used to the ratings numbers that the 3 hour block would carry. They split it, thinking that they would get two audiences. They didn't. Ratings went down on all three effected shows.

SG-1 didn't carry itself to the same ratings because RDA left, and there were some viewers who watched simply for him.

The three shows worked off each other. I didn't care for Galactica, but I watched it because there were two shows I enjoyed before it. Once it moved, I didn't care about it again, and didn't watch.

The down ratings resulted in the cancellation of SG-1.

No SG-1 resulted in the SGA ratings dropping even further, and lead to its cancellation.

So, really, the two things to blame for the cancellation of Atlantis are greedy network execs and those damn Cylons.

As for your points though, you are looking for a serialized series. SG1 and Atlantis were not those. Universe will be more, since its a continuing story, but not to the effect of one episode directly effecting the next every time, like Lost or Heroes or 24.

hmmm i didn't think having that block mattered so much. i just figured people would watch what they liked and not watch the others

and i don't expect every single episode to have a huge impact on the series, but they kept doing the same scenarios from SG-1 and even some rehashes from previous seasons on Atlantis over and over again. they just changed the characters and situations to be more "extreme" and it got too ridiculous

i think people liked SG-1 for its simplicity, or at least i did. and although SG-1 did have pretty much the perfect cast, that can't substitute for a good story. a good story needs to have challenges to overcome and good character development, which translates into progress. neither of which atlantis had imo

Whether we like it or not, the "block" system from what I read on a sci-fi review seems to be why shows declined. So yeah, it IS why each ended up getting

hurt in the long run. I would sit down on Friday nights for hours of Stargate enjoyment and when SG1 got canned, I had a harder time pulling myself to watch

SG:A.

Oh well, he's to one final episode :)

I agreed with perma. The block would reduce ratings but ratings don't affect ****ty writing. Point is SG-1 first half was more about new things, after the fact it wasn't. Atlantis was the same thing, you'd think with the city of the ancients they would have had endless possibilities of the ideas to come up with. Seasons 1 and 2 were good, the rest started a decline. I hope Universe will be better but I think the glory days of Stargate are long behind us. At least we still have those :)

on thing that always bugged me about atlantis is that they hardly explored the city in my eyes... like really ...a city that huge had to have loads of interesting things.

plus i do agree season 5 didnt really have much of any type of story arc or advancement. just a series of mini filler storys that really didnt add anything.

Good point WolfDV.

That city, judging by the scale of some of the shots used throughout the series, would hold such numerous rooms for plot lines. I suppose in the interest

of $ and time, you can only build a handful of sets and reuse/redress them to to suit the episode. Its a pity they couldn't expand on the city's history at least

somewhat, even if it was only an episode or two.

Things we learned "about" the city through SG:A's run-

Underwater jumper bay

Hidden magentic-resonance door room

Lab used to create Asurans?

Statis pod room

Things I wished they would have at least touched on:

Other scientific/experiment labs

Engine/power generation area?

    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
    • Interesting read. I knew the adware was quite controversial at the time, however never realised to the point The Guardian wrote an article about Patchou. I just said no and enjoyed his creation, I’d probably be a lot more wary of something like that today though.
