Why "Safari"?

Probably not. ;)

My breakdown of it is.

Internet Explorer = Explorer

Netscape Navigator = Navigator

Apple Safari = Safari

All of which have some form of travel/exploration theme to them. :)

Yup, and like Cara already said, "Safari" connects to travel and exploration, same as the other major browsers.

jaguar is 10.2

10.2 server was supposedly codenamed tigger

and panther is the next one in line

The Beach Boys being a popular choice before a keynote, perhaps Jobs is a fan? Plus it ties the surfing/navigiating themes of other browers.
