Well, I had a little catch on apple.com on their mobileme page...

Picture%201.png

Look familiar? Yup, that's Firefox. Not Safari, which a year ago Apple essentially vowed to wipe off the face of the earth (remember that pie chart?).

I just found it interesting, but it begs a question: is Apple giving up on Safari for Windows in its current form?

Also worth noting, http://www.apple.com/safari/ now mentions the PC version more as an aside; that is, there is now only a screenshot of Safari for Mac. The only noticeable mention of a PC version is in the small text under "Download". Sorry, it shows the screenshot based on the user agent.

Could be, but Apple's been pushing their branding very hard. I doubt they're giving up on Safari, but they might've realized that theming it like OS X isn't the way to go. At least I hope they have.

No matter what, it's either an interesting slip up or an interesting move on Apple's part.

I still don't think Apple ever seriously intended Safari to be widely used on non-macs. But they had to play it as so in order to get Web Developers not to ignore Safari when designing web pages.

Software market share on Windows is much more competitive.

Besides, unlike iTunes, there's no money to be made in the Web Browser world.

Yes. IMO Safari on Windows is solely for developers.

Are you kidding me? How do you think Mozilla have been able to fund Firefox?

Though that search box that have at the top, and how the default homepage is Google. (This may be different if you import your IE settings however, never done that myself.)

If they wanted it to look more like Vista, then they should've used IE tbh.

I really don't think it matters. As pointed out, I think Apple was simply making it clear that they were showing off Vista. And who knows, maybe people assume that if they see Safari, it's Mac OS X, regardless of what the user interface looks like.

I did just send that to the web team for correction. ;)

There's nothing to correct.

The point of the ad is that MobileMe will work on any platform in almost any environment. They've announced they will officially support IE7, FF2 & Safari 3 and higher ... the ad is simply displaying that in a graphic.

What a silly thread.

But if they were showing off Vista, why wouldn't they use IE7? People recognize that more than they recognize Firefox.

Yeah, I was thinking on the same line here.

Nothing to stop someone on OSX putting a Vista wallpaper on. They probably could've avoided this by including the task bar, and perhaps putting the computer on the right instead of the left so that we can see the start button.

Agreed. And for someone who works for Apple to submit it for correction is pretty funny. I'll bet the response is same as yours. "We are showing that MobileMe can be used on the Windows platform in another browser."

It's a good thing Apple only has these conferences twice a year. Because twice a year the community shows how dumb it can be at any given moment. People just do not understand the point, nor the history of these conferences.

Yeah, given this thread and its absurdity I'm surprised no one's sending reports into the web team like this: OMG OMG OMG WTF your new ad has a PC in it!!!?!?!?! Aren't these the very PC's that you have essentially vowed to wipe off the face of the earth? OMG FIX IT NOWWWW!!!!"

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
