The Finder icon is special enough already, it cannot be removed and it cannot be moved either. It cannot be closed either. But Mac OS X relies on it... sometimes it annoyed me, but in this case adding this functionality would make things better for real.

Here's another issue :

The Dashboard icon, on the other hand, is also special because even though Dashboard is always open here, there's no arrow or orb to indicate it's opened. I say they should add to arrow / orb if : you have rebooted and clicked on it to load the widgets. Then the arrow / orb could stay all the while until you reboot.

You can hover that folder over de Trash or any other folder in your Dock and a Finder window will open with full access to every directory on your Mac. Just as simple and just as useful. Or you just hover it over one of the drives on your Desktop (if enabled).

I would never have thought, you see... I mean, I already did it, but wouldn't see it as a wordaround because "it didn't make sense in my head to hover it over the trash to just be able to move the file". Now I'm gonna use it because I know, but it's not intuitive really...

It's as good as clicking Start to Shutdown the computer :p

I have replaced the Documents stack with a Home folder stack for that reason: Quick access to everything incase the drives on my Desktop are covered by a window.

Beyond the fact the Finder alias has been locked in place and can't be removed it's still a regular link to Finder.app. Not much special about that.

The Dashboard icon points to a script wrapped up in a .app package with a fancy icon. It doesn't actually link to the Dashboard service itself, because it's is an integrated part of Dock.app. Hence the lacking running indicator / orb. Same applies to Expos?.app and Stacks.app.

its this compatible with Quicktime 7 and Leopard?

No sorry :) Whenever they release theming software I'll create a system wide theme like that. I've had one in the works for awhile just chilling lol. I was surprised they put the images for it so easily accessible. If only the rest of it was like that.

And I'm still downloading the new seed. Went from 900kb/s to 200kb/s :( Taking forever. Apparently its faster? Anyone confirm?

Just updated. Looks like all Dock menus are being moved to the transparent black look. I wonder if this is the beginning of a full transition because right now the new style looks awfully out of place.

I hope they are fully transitioned. I love the style ever since it popped up in iMovie.

It looks great in iMovie because the application spots a lot more darker elements. The 3D Dock, Menu Bar and all other menus are white however. So it kind of clashes IMO.

First time I noticed that a Finder window does a really cool transition effect when going from full view to minimal.

Btw anyone curious, you can stop the download and start it again which I did and speeds were fast again. I agree the darker elements don't make sense in the main gui. Some apps yea but until the main gui turns dark they will always be outcasts. However I don't expect them to ever change it to a dark gui. Nor do I expect to see white huds :puke:

I guess they're making it consistent with the rest of the Dock. At least they're moving to one style there, rather than a incoherent mess of new and old styled menus. I guess that's something. :/

It downloaded here in ?15 minutes.

Looks kinda cool, it does separate the dock from other apps in another way (not necessarily a bad thing)... but I'd have to use it to get a true feel.

I wonder if they'll open this menu up in different ways to developers... the layout offers some new opportunities. Could throw some album art with a pause/play/ff/rw button up above, like in Windows 7...

Mac OS X has had controlling features from the Dock menus since day one. They're not as graphical as those of Windows 7, but just as effective.

Yeah, I've used them, they're pretty simple to use. But this gives the extra space to go the graphical route ;)

I'm sure they'll just throw an optional NSView up there, it'd be illogical not to imo...

Anything obviously new in this build besides the HUD menus? Does QuickTime X have its new icon + preferences yet?

I just installed in now, the update was 1.3gb there has to be more than that

i will dig around

Anyone want me to look for anything specific? i will make a screencast and upload to youtube for anything you want to see

This is just to cool lol, i thought 10.6 wasn't supposed to be about cosmetic changes?

looks like no QT pref's and no the Icon is still the old blue one

I had the chance to play around a bit more with this build and I have to say the new HUD menus are starting to grow on me. It actually looks pretty cool and gives the Dock a bit of a more unique look and feel compared to other OSs like Windows.

Something I can't stand though: All the menu's, including the new HUD ones of the Dock, feature a blur effect. That is except for the Stacks grid view. I wish Apple would fix this.

I'd actually prefer if they stayed clear of graphics. I like the clean impression compared to the Windows 7 jump list.

you still need QT 7 for QR and Quartz to

Blurred? where?

Since Mac OS X v10.5.2 Apple heavily reduced the transparency of the default white contextual menus so it isn't as apparent anymore. It's more obvious with the in-window dialogue windows and the new HUD contextual menus. The blur effect isn't nearly as strong as it is in Windows Vista and 7, but it's definitely there.

    • Thanks Microsoft but no, I find both iterations of Outlook terrible nowadays and switched back to Thunderbird at home.
    • Happens to the best of us, bro. 😛
    • Thanks to some of the other recent Windows improvements, I'm optimistic about this one. My quick wishlist would be: perf like the older menu, merge both menus or at the very least, the older menu should be a flyout, not a simulated click to the old menu, and lastly, a customization window to let users move items from one menu to another, so I could bring Send To back to the main menu, and the OneDrive settings to the older.
