Perhaps the X has lost its marketing traction through the years from constant exposure and they are trying out the actual code name for a refresh in interest.

In a way, yes, you are. There is, at the moment, no way to buy a DVD of Snow Leopard that will let you do a full, clean install, as you could with Leopard and every previous release of Mac OS X.

I don't know why Apple simply won't offer a $129 version of Snow Leopard like they did with every other previous Mac OS X release, or why the $29 version simply isn't a full DVD. Upgrading your OS is always messier and more risky than doing a clean install.

Where exactly did you get that nonsense from? It's perfectly possible to perform an Erase & Install with the Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD. They just changed the way to do it. If you go to Disk Utility and erase your Macintosh HD the installer will automatically execute an Erase & Install when you continue with the installation process.

Does make you wonder why they've chosen to go with an actual snow leopard on the packaging rather than a generic artistic view of space like that have done previously.

Others might think it's a joke Windows doesn't have a feature like spring-loaded folders, something that has existed in Mac OS for quite some time.

Windows 7 does exactly the same for Windows Vista as what Mac OS X Snow Leopard does for Mac OS X Leopard. It doesn't come with too many major new features, it has a lot of smile refinements to the interface and they optimized it to have a smaller disk footprint and be faster.

Oh and remind me, when was the last time a Service Pack brought things like full 64-bit support and completely rewritten system applications to Windows?

I could go on about Windows 7 but this doesn't seem an appropriate thread for it. Also any other advantage having 64bit other than addressing memory larger than 4GB ?

Seems kinda odd for them to put a "big cat" picture on the front of the box, which marries up to the code name.. have they done that for any other OSX release?! I always thought they were just a variation on the 'X' previously?!

They have always used an X in their packaging.

I like the idea of including the cat on the packaging, but think it would still be effective to also feature the X, even if it's done in a subtle way (embossed in the background behind the cat, maybe?)

I think it's horrible!!! But the important here is the software isn't it?... For me the greatest boxes were from Panther to Leopard, I think black is a so fashionable and deluxe color! So this box is simply 'X' (ironicaly), I'm dissapointed with the walpapers as well, It's true that 'set image as desktop' and 'restore item' from trash has been for a while in windows, maybe we have a point for M$ here on the copy issues, but I prefer OS X for much over Windows, more stable, faster, quicker, nicer, so fashion'd, etc etc etc etc etc....

And of course I agree that Windows is OOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDD!

If the Ultimate version costs $129... I'd go buy it with no doubt immediately, It's hilarious that parody from Steve Jobs of Leopard Versions (all at $129) XD

Never, because that isn't what service packs do. Service packs for Windows are like 10.x.y updates for Mac OS X; all they do is bring together a number of hotfixes, patches and other security updates.

Microsoft offers a number of SKU because the average person doesn't need Ultimate.

Why not spend a lot less and get Home Premium, which is fine for the typical home user?

I'd be surprised if that is the real box, Apple have been moving all of their Boxed software over to a standard size. Even Logic and Final Cut Studio are the same dimensions just thicker.

The other thing to consider, the box goes against a lot of Apple's logo usage and branding rules (of which there are a lot).

Edit: Actually going back a few pages and the box is the right size, The one sitting on top of a MacBook Pro looked longer.

How did you do that ? I just bought a new MacBook Pro like 2 days ago and I wanted to pay that $10 to buy Snow Leopard, but I couldn't add it to my cart as they haven't created the product yet on the Apple Online Store... I guessed I had to just wait until it's released and then add it and the system would check for previews orders and detect a MacBook bought August 14 or something.

Also, I'm pretty positive that this is the real deal for the packaging and DVD picture (hint : they haven't changed the Welcome Video apparently, well it still fits with that theme) :

Hmm, so I installed snow leopard on here and I notice no difference whatsoever. Everything seems exactly the same, no real speed increases or anything. Granted it did do an upgrade and keep all my settings and programs etc, maybe it needs a clean install? How is that done?

Maybe go on Apple.com and look at all the features one by one and try to reproduce them. It IS different and more optimized, but things are subtle sometimes...

Serious? Sorry, as I said earlier, I uninstalled Snow Leopard to reinstall a clean install of Leopard... so I don't know what happens. I thought this icon was a photoshop or something.

Then yeah, it must be true. I'd be curious to know why they did this, because the good old X was a winning choice IMO.

I've installed the reported GM Build on my machine but after reading many of the comments on this board, I have a question. How do I know if my machine's kernel is running at 64bit? If it's not, how can you enable it? :blink:

Why not change the packaging artwork? "Mac OS X" is a strong brand identity on its own, and it really doesn't matter what style of art accompanies the text. The key is that people understand the brand "Mac OS X," and people clearly do.

As to why the welcome video hasn't changed, hmm... That does seem a bit "incomplete." But on the other hand, I suppose the major end-user features of Leopard still apply in Snow Leopard, which really doesn't have any major end-user features that would stand out on their own on a welcome video.

Unlikely, 432 does not allow changing to 64bit kernel mode on 3,1 series MBP's for example which are 64-bit capable which would either indicate a blunder or missing features, also there are problems with the documentation and some out of date files.

Bah, I don't think I can use the Up-To-Date program, as it only counts retail and online Apple Stores.

It'd be nice if there were more than 2 Apple stores in the entire country, and their booths in normal stores don't stock much (and even then I think there's only like 3 in the entire city, none of them stocking the Mac I got)
