The_Decryptor Veteran Posted June 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 11, 2008 Unsurprisingly, different tasks run faster and slower, even on the same system. Firefox 3 RC2 on the left, Safari 4 DP on the right. In some tests Firefox is faster, in some Safari is faster, in some there's barely any difference, but SquirrelFish is an overall improvement. Now lets see how fast Firefox gets once ActionMonkey lands. Timan Veteran Posted June 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 11, 2008 The new Inspector fracking rocks aswell. PyX
Oh wow, they FINALLY included the not-so-new-anymore Web Inspector!!! I was wondering why it wasn't there in Safari 3, I mean, it's the best Inspector I've ever seen in all my life and it didn't even make it into the final :s Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/642444-safari-4-developer-preview/page/2/#findComment-589473830 Share on other sites
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted June 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 11, 2008 Yeah, the Web Inspector is awesome. and being able to view the HTTP headers (request and response) is great too. wellofsouls
So what's the difference between Safari 3.1.1 with latest webkit nightly vs. Safari 4 with latest webkit nightly? I'm not too hot on the "web application" thing, just like Mozilla Prism, this kind of stuff just feels like something of a curiosity, interesting, but not much use. Web Clips are actually much more useful. And it seems Apple still haven't add some very basic things like the ability to force pop-ups open in new tabs instead of new windows, or prompt before starting a download, so the "carpet bombing" vulnerability is still there I guess. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/642444-safari-4-developer-preview/page/2/#findComment-589473886 Share on other sites
Crazysah
That is exactly what I was wondering. There was a webkit nightly just yesterday... so what is the difference between that and this? Thanks! Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced and enable "Show Develop menu in menu bar". Firefox 3 RC2 - 6321.2ms Safari 4 - 7963.0ms SunSpider results on Windows XP SP3, AMD Athlon XP (only SSE). wellofsouls
That is exactly what I was wondering. There was a webkit nightly just yesterday... so what is the difference between that and this? I'd guess the only differences are the "Save as web app..." and the revamped "Develop" Menu with modified Web Inspector and new Javascript debugger. Might as well give it a whirl. I get 98/100 (Sometimes I got 97/100..) on the Acid3 page. So close. :p I can actually get 100/100 in Acid3 with Safari 4 occassionally, it seems to fluctuates randomly between 97 and 100 :p It's just with such a great rendering engine like WebKit, Safari somehow lacks a lot in certain basic usability aspects. :shiftyninja: Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/642444-safari-4-developer-preview/page/2/#findComment-589476466 Share on other sites
shakey_snake
FYI, Webkit Benchmarks differently than other browsers, do to the fact that it fires onload() events before the content is rendered. So you can't directly compare the numbers against other browsers. Noobs. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/642444-safari-4-developer-preview/page/2/#findComment-589476509 Share on other sites

wellofsouls
The nightly is a nightly (i.e. bleeding edge current development)Safari 4 is a preview of the next release (i.e. more stable code) Err... what I mean is the difference between Safari 3.1.1 with nightly vs. Safari 4 with nightly. ie, running the latest nightly with Safari 3.1.1 installed, vs. running the latest nightly with Safari 4 installed. I guess the only difference would be some UI modification between Safari 3.1.1 and Safari 4 (since the rendering engine should be the same in this case, ie. the latest WebKit nightly). wellofsouls
the nightly is bleeding edge code. Of course, I know that very well, I don't know why you find it necessary to repeat it time and again though  From the looks of it, there isn't a difference between Safari 3.1.1 vs. Safari 4 apart from WebKit. well, like I said, there are some little UI differences between 3.3.1 and 4 besides the engine, for example the new "Save as Web Application..." item in File menu, and the new Javascript debugger and profiler in the Develop menu ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/642444-safari-4-developer-preview/page/2/#findComment-589477388 Share on other sites

+Batfink Subscriber² Posted June 12, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted June 12, 2008 Does anyone know if Apple intend to beef up security in 4.0? In particular I am hoping they include: Extended Validation Certificates (Like Opera, Safari & IE) Phishing Protection from places like Netcraft and PhishTank, and Malware protection from Haute Secure (Like Opera) Maybe using ClamAV to automatically scan downloads and HTML content before it is loaded Any news on the Security front? bbfc_uk
Just joined ADC so I can download the Safari 4 Preview. Its very fast, but on my machine I don't find it significantly quicker than IE8 Beta 2. It certainly doesn't take as long to load up, but its not quicker than IE8. I really hope they do something to the UI on Windows, it just look so out of place.
