Just got my first mac: Macbook Pro

Recommended Posts

Hey hey,

Just want to update everyone. I bought a MPB, the base model, and I love it. Setting it up and transfering files from my Windows PC. I got a long day of software installation but the experience is great. I have a second monitor hooked up and it works flawlessly.

This thing is fast too! One thing tho is that it is feels freakishly hot.

Question: I have speakers hooked up. Is there a way to make the output volume 100% but the onboard speakers lower? I don't want to have to turn it down and up everytime i disconnect it.

Thanks again everyone.

I don't know about the Pro, but on my Macbook it remembers the last setting for onboard and when I plug in headphones e.g. set it at 6 with headphones in and 10 without headphones in, I plug in headphones and it changes to 6 :)

Thanks for the welcome boys.

Another issue: I'm transferring files between my old laptop and this one over wifi and it works. The problem is that when I'm doing this, I lose web connection and keep timing out...everyone on the network does.

Is there a way to limit the amount of bandwidth used? I'm on a G network so I figure there is enough bandwidth for everything.

My Mac gets greedy I think as well, and I sometime loose connection to the Web.

where are the unboxing pics? and the UPS guy pics too LOL

haha it was sent within canada with canada post so it was the regular mail man. He knew I was waiting for him since I opened the door before he rang the door bell.

As for unboxing, I was thinking of taking pics but that would have slowed me down!

Everything is up and running now, including parallels (amazing). All my torrents were downloading excrutiatingly slowly and I went through about 5 clients before I reluctantly got Azureus, which works a lot better, read faster.

I love how it automatically enables and disables my secondary monitor when I connect it.

I need to get/make a stand for it, approx. 3-4 inches high so that it is level with my monitor and a front row remote (so frustrating that they don't include it).

EDIT: solved the stand problem with a plexiglass magazine rack.

Congrats! I started with a MAC about 6-7 years ago with a Dual 1GhZ MDD. It is still great today. Last year I left my Dell Inspiron laptop behind as it started to lag and upgraded to a 17" MBP on which I use bootcamp and Vista Ultimate as well. MAC OS is my preferred OS but as a Windows developer, I still need the Windows world.

    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
    • AMAZON needs to take total accountability for this.
    • Server Summit had a heap of announcements, ADCS changes are baller.
    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
