"Nintendo's Wii and NDS have captured the top two spots in terms of hardware sales for the fourth consecutive month."

"GTA IV has now generated combined sales of 4.2 million units, making it the top-selling title of the year."

"A lot of folks are interested in the battle of the bands. Year-to-date, Guitar Hero III has sold 2.5 million units compared to Rock Band's 1.3 million which lands them both in the top 10 titles for the year so far."

WHO IS BUYING THAT POS IRON MAN GAME ON THE PS2?!

It is strange GTA4 seems to be shipping NO hardware at all :/ Guess a lot of people might of bought their console of choice in preparation for November last year (initial GTA4 release).

Xbox 360: E3 bound

Last month we showcased an all-star lineup of games including ?Gears of War 2,? ?Fable 2,? ?Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts,? ?Viva Pi?ata 2,? We still have quite a few aces left up our sleeve; see you at E3 next month!3 next month!

Wonder what that could be. Comes from Microsoft's Press release about the NPD numbers.

No one ever seemed to use this, but I'll continue to post NPDs in here from now on just like the Japanese topic (Y)

More PS3s sold worldwide in Q2 than 360s

Sony's recently revealed Q2 earnings report reveals that the PS3 has sold 2.43 million units worldwide during the three month period ending September 30th. That's an improvement of over a million on its Q2 2007 sales figures and brings the number of PS3s around the world to a total of 16.84 million. Software sales for the console have also more than double from the same period last year to 21.1 million.

Microsoft recently reported that the 360 sold 2.2 million consoles worldwide during the Q2 FY period, just shy of PS3 sales despite a price cut which came into effect in early-mid September. Q3 is going to be an interesting battleground, what with Sony being adamant about not cutting price. We're intrigued to see whether LittleBigPlanet and the PS3's other big exclusives (we'd love to see some real marketing for Valkyria Chronicles -- that game deserves to sell well) will push boxes this quarter despite the 360's price cut momentum. Only time will tell.

Pretty much neck and neck just now.

I'd be afraid if customers might be ignorant by thinking "Well, the PS3 costs quite a bit more, that means it must be better?".

What customers exactly would do that?

A games console is bought on request by most gamers, either through parents (if younger) or by themselves (if older).

I seriously doubt many people think more expensive = better (in the console gaming world). If so, no one would've bought a Wii

You buy consoles based on games you like/other functions, not what has a higher price tag.

If anything it's a lower price tag that has affect in the gaming world, not a higher.

No one ever seemed to use this, but I'll continue to post NPDs in here from now on just like the Japanese topic (Y)

I'll wait for some unbiased confirmed 3rd party figures.

*Sigh*

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/

http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/

All part of the joystiq network, and large and reputable sites. In fact, all they do is take the console specific news from http://www.joystiq.com and post under these sub-domains.

And secondly, these figures are from official financial releases

Sony: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.html

Microsoft: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/micr...e-up-9-per-cent

Why do you ALWAYS give me such a hard time? It really is ridiculous.

'Official' figures are always grandiose and exaggerated. Considering NPD figures have put 360 outselling ps3 for a while now and are based on *actual* sales figures, i'd be more inclined to wait for them.

What. YTD the PS3 has outsold the 360 based on NPD 5 of the 9 months of the year so far. It's quite reasonable to say that the PS3 beat the 360 for Q2.

Um what?

You're actually saying that the financial report figures from MS and Sony directly are untrustworthy?

The figures above are global sales (based on 3 months), the PS3 currently leads in America so the figures above are correct.

NPDs valid up to September (most recent).

Firstly, the numbers in the earning reports are both sold-to-retail. Theses are not exaggerations, they are real numbers (to the nearest 0.1 million or so). Now these are not sold-to-consumer numbers, so it doesn't necessarily mean PS3 outsold 360 this past quarter, just that it was shipped to more stores. Of course, these are also worldwide numbers, not just American ones.

Secondly NPD are not always going to be 100%, they get the numbers from around 2/3 of the stores and estimate the other 1/3. Unlike financial reports, NPD track sold-to-consumer numbers, and while some is made up of estimates, it's still the best source for this kind of data (as opposed to VGChartz). These numbers are usually just American (with us sometimes getting Canadian NPD figures too). There are similar trackers for some other countries as well (such as Media-Create for Japan).

So on one hand we have sold-to-retail ("shipped") worldwide numbers, and then on the other, consumer sell-through figures for America only. You can't really compare either and say one is wrong by looking at both, since they're fairly different.

What would be a good comparison is worldwide "shipped" data VS worldwide consumer sell-through. The thing is we don't get these numbers from most European countries, or if we do it's very rarely.

360 (US + JPN) Q2

Jul08: 204.8K + 23.0K = 227.8K

Aug08: 195.2K + 38.9K = 234.1K

Sep08: 347.2K + 54.3K = 401.5K

Total = 863.4K

PS3 (US + JPN) Q2

Jul08: 224.9K + 58.2K = 283.1K

Aug08: 185.4K + 39.8K = 225.2K

Sep08: 232.4K + 32.8K = 265.2K

Total = 773.5K

If we combine US and Japan sales data for the Q2 financial period, we see the 360 in the lead by just around 90K. The problem is that we still are missing a whole chuck of the world, so Sony could have done better (or worse) in Europe over this period. Basically though, the difference between the 2 is fairly small, especially when you compare them to the Wii. 360 will probably do better this quarter as well due to the price cut.

One more thing to consider (gee, long post) is that just because 360 shipped less in the quarter, doesn't mean that less were sold if they already had more units in stores. And if Sony had less stock in retail, it would allow them to ship more to sell, not necessarily for this quarter either.

So NPD, MC, shipment numbers, while all useful in different ways, while correct in different ways, don't exactly go hand-in-hand.

Somehow Nintendo supposedly have European sales :/

Not creating a topic for these, as it's not as if i can carry on the topic weekly/monthly as we never seem to find out sales ourselves...

And no, VGChartz didn't make these graphs, they're directly from Nintendo (check URLs).

There's a hell of a lot more graphs above in the link, all from Nintendo. American/Japanese, Console/Handheld, etc.

Looks like LBP wasn't as popular as some of you were saying it would be, and wasn't a console seller. Pretty sure I predicted that a long time ago.

Huge boost for the 360. I'm actually surprised it got that much of a boost so early before Xmas. Same with the Wii. Considering the economy, I'd say good on the gaming industry :D

There are Xbox 360 core offeres everywhere. :| Even sign a cell phone plan and get an Xbox 360! $199 is going to make this holiday interesting.

Not to mention Dell has marked down all models by $20-50. I just hope Live is up to the task this time (knowing Microsoft has put in efforts on that front).

I think with all the money troubles this year it's really affecting peoples spending habits. With the 360 as cheap as it is, and a really healthy release schedule leading up to christmas, it has it in the bag.

On the flip side, with the ps3 being so pricey and no real killer games besides lbp, they can't do much without a huge price cut.

no real killer games besides lbp

I've just bought MS2 and R2 and they're really good (Y)

Plus all the other great multiplatform titles still come to the PS3 you know.

    • The 2TB Samsung 990 PRO NVMe SSD hits lowest price in over three months by Sayan Sen Yesterday, we covered a really good deal wherein you can get a 4TB TeamGroup T-FORCE G50 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD for a low price of just $400 with a special discount coupon. That's just $100 per TB, making it a very good offer during these hard times. The deal is still live, so you can check it out in its dedicated article here if you do not want to miss out. Meanwhile, if you don't have that kind of budget but still wish to buy an SSD for a good price, the 2TB variant of the TeamGroup SSD at $280 its lowest price in over three months. Meanwhile, those seeking 2TB but faster performance can check out Samsung's 990 PRO, which has hit the lowest price also in the last quarter or so, as it's on sale for $370 (purchase links under the specs table down below). Thus, you want a faster drive, get the 990 Pro, or you want more capacity, grab the TeamGroup 4TB linked in the first para. The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $500. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. • If you can't spell a simple word that 2nd graders learn, your entire argument is suspect.
    • And here goes the "Won't someone think of the children" brigade. Get stuffed mate. This has NOTHING to do with making the internet safe. It's about tracking adults, spying on your online activity, and sending the boys around when they don't like something you post. Also, again, parliament have voted TWICE against this, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. THAT is anti-democratic bullsh**. They will use this law to track you, they will use this law to control you, and they will use this law to punish you if they don't like what you do, even if it's legal. And your data? Say bye bye to that. It'll be on the darkweb in weeks. I'm not some rando online. I've been an IT professional for 40 years, many of it in security. I know exactly what this means and what will happen to your data. I do not consent and I will not comply.
    • "...but it may not be Microsoft's fault" seems like a reasonable way to tease what is going on without leaving the user with a false impression that an update is the problem. A title isn't a summery, it is meant to entice the user to read the article. It should not contain a misleading premise; which this title does not. You could maybe complain that the first paragraph should have included that detail. The writing style popularized over 100 years ago in newspapers will cover the most important information as soon as possible with details and nuance added later; the idea being that with each new paragraph you have less of the reader's focus.
    • Samsung Galaxy XR arrives in the UK with new AI and enterprise features by Fiza Ali Samsung is bringing its Galaxy XR headset to the UK several months after the device made its debut as the first headset built on Google's Android XR platform. The headset was first teased in late 2024 alongside Google's introduction of Android XR before making its commercial debut in 2025. Developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, Galaxy XR combines mixed reality experiences with Gemini-powered AI features, allowing users to interact with digital content using voice, gestures, and visual inputs. While the hardware itself remains largely unchanged from the version Samsung unveiled last year, the company is using the UK launch to spotlight several software enhancements that have arrived through recent updates. Among the most notable additions is deeper integration with Google's ecosystem. Galaxy XR users can explore destinations through Google Maps' Immersive View, receiving AI-powered recommendations and contextual information from Gemini while navigating virtual environments. Furthermore, entertainment experiences have also expanded; users can watch 180-degree and 360-degree videos on YouTube, browse spatial content converted into 3D, and ask Gemini questions about on-screen content without interrupting playback. Samsung is also highlighting mixed-reality features such as Circle to Search, which allows users to identify real-world objects through hand gestures while using the headset's video pass-through mode. Another feature automatically converts photos and videos into spatial 3D experiences. Moreover, the headset now also supports Android Enterprise, allowing organisations to manage deployments using existing Android management tools. Annika Bizon, Vice President, Product and Marketing, Mobile Experience, Samsung UK & Ireland, talked about the device, stating: The headset is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform and features dual 4K Micro-OLED displays. The tech giant says that users can expect up to 2.5 hours of battery life. Samsung also confirmed that Galaxy XR will continue receiving software and security updates as the company works alongside Google and Qualcomm to expand the Android XR ecosystem. Galaxy XR is now available for pre-order and will go on sale on 8 July. Customers interested in trying the headset before launch can visit Samsung KX in London and selected Samsung Experience Stores from 17 June. Finally, the company will also host a livestream on 19 June showcasing the headset's capabilities and answering questions from prospective customers.
