Microsoft to buy Sega?

it?s no surprise that rumours are once again circulating that Microsoft may be about to make a move for SEGA (now SEGA Sammy Corp). It?s certainly not the first time we?ve heard about such a move - the last mention of it being back in early 2004 when it was speculated upon on many industry sites such as The Register and Gamespot. When you think about it, such a move would make perfect sense.

Microsoft are expected to make a ?shocking and desperate? announcement at this years E3 - all we know is that it will be software related and nothing to do with hardware. It?s also no secret that Microsoft has had a very hard time in Japan with the 360 - SEGA might be the very company to help turn that around.

Could be very interesting - might be good if Sega's back catalogue could be mined for future releases (well as long as it's not another 3d-Sonic!)

No no no no no no no

This would be awful, I think sega are in the best position they have been in for some years, I'm always hoping they can one day re-enter the hardware market.

not quite, most games they've released lately have been horrible, Sega was at its peak during the Genesis era and then everything went downhill from there

I'm not sure if Sega will be THAT great a purchase, but MS sure as hell need to beef up their first party developers.

Outside of this new Sonic, that for once is actually looking decent, Shenmue 3 is the only really big title that could hugely help I think...

As mentioned in the article, the first thing that came to mind is Microsoft starting to pull out the big guns in attempts to get further into Japan. They've come back a little recently with some moderately successful B-tier titles but nothing AAA or even AA. They dont have the resources to launch a console in this day and age. If it happens it could work out.

And Nintendo? even Microsoft doesnt have that kind of cash. It's now Japan's third biggest company. Not that they'd sell anyway......

I can see why Microsoft want to do this, but I really hope they don't. Because SEGA exited from the hardware market, they need to leverage their software skills to the widest possible array of platforms. If Microsoft buys SEGA, they will no doubt limit publishing rights to the XBox or Windows platforms only.

Now as an avid Sony fan and a long time hardcore Sonic fan, I'd probably be quite distraught if Microsoft/SEGA published the next few titles on 360 only. This move will upset Nintendo the most I think, but I would like to see a new Nights game for the PS3, lush, but a dream I know.

SEGA (now SEGA Sammy Corp)

 Weird name.

Back on-topic, personally, I'd really like to see MS buy SEGA. SEGA have had it. They don't make any good games anymore. The only new SEGA games I've liked are Condemned (the first one; the second one sucks), Virtua Fighter 5 (the first VF game I've actually liked), and Full Auto.

I would go after Nintendo.
Joke of the day :|

Oh come on. It wouldn't be that hard. They would just build a giant fortress and trap NOA (which is pretty much right across the street from Microsoft in Redmond) inside with them. Then, NOA is theirs :p

I've heard that MS has something up their sleeve for E3, but I seriously doubt it's out of any kind of desperation. That's a loaded statement.

I would prefer SEGA to be brought by MS because then maybe will be get some decent, high quality games again that made SEGA famous and loved.

Most of the crap they throw out now it's very poor. Every Sonic game has been poor after Sonic Adventure, Condemed 1 & 2 were both awful aswell.

SEGA were much better when thery were in the hardware market, maybe they should re-enter.

Condemned 1 was awesome, Condemned 2 was alright, could have been better but I agree with the Sonic games, all were rubbish. I doubt Sega will re-enter the hardware market, do they even have enough money and resources to do so?

I think Microsoft would only buy them if they did some promising games such as Shemnue 3 and a new Jet Set Radio or something which would be awesome.

If Microsoft were to buy Sega then they should do it only with guarantees!

If SEGA wants to re-enter the market, then they will need to come up with something original in hardware like Nintendo did with the Wii. If it is just another console then it would never stand a chance against the PS3 and Xbox360 (or probably PS4 and Xbox720 by the time they got it out of the door).

I think Microsoft would only buy them if they did some promising games such as Shemnue 3 and a new Jet Set Radio or something which would be awesome.

Now that would be kickass! It might happen, as Shenmue II and Jet Set Radio Future were both released on the Xbox.

If SEGA wants to re-enter the market, then they will need to come up with something original in hardware like Nintendo did with the Wii.

Now that is damn near impossible. Then again, SEGA did do this before with the Dreamcast. The first console ever to have online play, but it was on dial-up, so it wasn't that good. Look at the consoles now. They're all online!

As much as I'd like to see Sega re-enter the hardware market it feels like it won't happen.

We really don't know the outcome of Sega's future, hopefully they won't be bought out my Microsoft because that just leaves the potential for future console hardware out the window.

We'll have to wait for E3 to see what MS has to say. The games they've listed for E3 so far have all been shown already so it's gotta be something big. Or I'd like to hope so.

When is E3 again? July?

    • Works fine here too. About this build, I don't like to download any kind of Windows, from any site except Microsoft. The mod might work, but I don't know what it's inside. Can contain malware, backdoors... Long time ago I've used something like this but reversed - it was 98se with the look and some functionality  of XP. Or, later XP with Vista look. But I made it myself. Not downloaded from obscure sites.
    • Rockstar gives last-gen GTA V players free upgrades tomorrow by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Rockstar is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, but ahead of that, the company has revealed a new offer for some Grand Theft Auto V owners. It today announced that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version owners of the 2013-released title will soon be receiving a free upgrade to the current generation version. The studio released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2022, bringing significant upgrades to the original console editions. This included 60 FPS gameplay at up to 4K resolution, as well as major upgrades to textures, draw distance, and audio. Faster load times, ray tracing elements, and HDR support were also added with it. While this new and enhanced version needed a new purchase of the game to jump in, now Rockstar has decided to make it a free upgrade, dropping the $40 price tag entirely on consoles. "Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTA V and GTA Online," said the company in an official blog post. The free upgrade offer will be released tomorrow, June 18, for all Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners of Grand Theft Auto V. Players who will be jumping in on the offer will want to check how to migrate their GTA Online profile from last-generation to current-generation consoles by heading over here. The offer lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist hitting Grand Theft Auto Online, where players and crews will be tasked with stealing priceless international art from a prestigious gallery in Pacific Bluffs. It doesn't look like Rockstar plans to stop updating its previous game even with Grand Theft Auto VI being on the horizon. The latest title is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
    • Now comes with a money back guarantee instead of a replacement! Hah
    • Rufus 4.15.2391 Beta by Razvan Serea Rufus is a small utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need! Oh, and Rufus is fast. For instance it's about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer or Windows 7 USB download tool, on the creation of a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO (with honorable mention to WiNToBootic for managing to keep up). It is also marginally faster on the creation of Linux bootable USBs from ISOs. A non-exhaustive list of Rufus supported ISOs is available here. It can be especially useful for cases where: you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.) you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS you want to run a low-level utility Rufus 4.15.2391 Beta changelog: Improve the guards for using the "silent" option Improve the ability to cancel during write retries Fix unrestricted XML entity expansion and integer overflow in ezxml parser (courtesy of @esadowski4) [GHSA-55r2-34wg-8mv9] Fix "silent" Windows installation failing at 75% in most cases [#2960] Fix a crash during boot when using UEFI:NTFS on Snapdragon X based ARM64 platforms [#2934] Fix the first WUE option always being checked by default [#2965] Fix an infinite loop when using Windows ISOs that contain multiple WIMs Fix "Enable runtime UEFI media validation" checkbox not always being properly enabled Other WUE improvements/fixes for OneDrive removal and username validation (with thanks to @christian8641) [#2984, #2991] Download: Rufus 4.15 Beta | 1.9 MB (Open Source) Links: Rufus Home Page | Project Page @GitHub | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
