The Official Spore Thread

Are there clear objectives in the game or is it 100% sandbox?

Bit of both. There are objectives that appear in the top-left of the screen, and give you points which further your ability to customize your creature and the world.

Did anyone else notice PC Gaming has been changed to Computer Gaming, guess it's because of Spore and the more games going to Mac. Isn't mac still a PC, so why the change?

aww i liked the 'Games for Windows' line :(

There are some people that still have the belief that PC = Windows box. We figured we'd appeal to all and just use the general term "computer" instead.

I noticed an awful lot of Spore copies sitting on the store shelves this weekend (Best Buy, Target, and Walmart). Maybe its a bad time for a game release (school starting), or maybe it just got overhyped a bit.

It goes back to when there were IBM compatible PCs and Apple/etc computers. The IBM part has been dropped but PCs are generally considered Windows computers by those that were around for that. I see PC as a Windows box, but personal computer (spelled out) as referring to anything that fits the current definition of a personal computer, like a Mac.

I've not touched it in a while now, it just got to be pretty boring...I seemed to have more fun with the creature creator.

Same here, with not touching it, its been a day or so. Just gets old sorta. I dunno. Still a good game.

I know this was probably brought up a few threads back...but looking back at the original Spore conference demo of 2005 makes me really want that version of the game more and more. everything just seems to make a lot more sense. And they got rid of the WATER stage as well.

All of the editors seem to make more sense as well. There seems to be a lot more involvement with the types of defense/attack mechanisms that you attach to your creature. The skeletal system seemed to make a lot more sense as well. There seemed to be so much more depth to this game. I really wonder why they scaled back on it so much. The game just seemed a lot less cartoony and a lot more science-y. Also, if you pay attention to some of the space stage, there seemed to be a lot more depth to it as well.

Oh well. there's always spore 2 to look forward to.

Hmm, played it for about an hour. Gets really repetetive, it's kind of fun, but seems more like an arcade game. (Almost like some flash game you'd play on the internet for 5 min)

For me it's become the game that I will play when I am bored and don't feel like playing or doing anything else. It's good for that. :)

I agree with you there, the game does get a little boring after a while..

I love to go on creature creator and just muck around with making random as things :D..

I have a question, when I wont to "share" something that I have made on Creature Creator, and it has been uploaded does the creatuer that I have made get taken of my like list or make it unavalible for me to use? Or does it just make a copy for the other person to use on there game?

Thanks :)

I'm kinda bored with it already too. Making different and new uglyass creatures is still fun, for a while, but still takes mere hours to advance all the way to the space stage, n then once beat that n get to the center, slowly colonizing/taking over everyy singleee planet gets boring real quick.

I want to get Spore and give it a try, but I refuse to while it's still got the malware DRM stuff in it.

I've not checked in a week or two, but has EA relented yet? Or are they standing firm with their customer-annoyance-ware ?

I have the game, and I have yet to see issue with the "malware". If you really want to try it and all, download it instead, if you like it then pay for it.

Agreed, especially if you're on edge about it, better to download it over blowing $50 on a game that you probably won't enjoy for more then a couple days...but if you like it, definitely buy it!

Publisher Electronic Arts and developer Maxis today released the first PC patch for the studio's recent evolution simulator Spore (PC, Mac), bringing the game up to v1.01.

Available for download upon booting the game and logging in with a Spore account, the update fixes some bugs, addresses some community complaints, and implements a few new cheat codes. It is unclear if this patch provides the promised DRM fix.

    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
