Seth Rogen appeared on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" Monday night to promote Pineapple Express and 'Richard' wrote in with the rundown:

Seth Rogen talks Green Hornet with David Letterman. Seth talks about diet and working out with a trainer to get ready to play Brit. He ended the segment by doing a running dive 17 feet across a swimming pool set up on 53rd Street while wearing a black business suit and tie. Seth lost his glasses during the stunt but managed to come in fourth in the Purina diving competition for dogs. It was a cool segment and it looks like he's already lost some weight.

Stephen Chow, one of Asia's most popular box-office draws as the award-winning star and director of such films as Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and Shaolin Soccer, will direct Seth Rogen and star opposite him as Kato in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet, set for release June 25, 2010, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, who will also executive produce. Neal H. Moritz is the producer through his Original Film production company.

In tapping Chow to helm The Green Hornet, Sony Pictures Entertainment continues a long association with the star and director. Under its local language initiative, Sony co-produced and released Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, which went on to gross over $100 million worldwide and received a Golden Globe? nomination as well as six Hong Kong Film Awards and five Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. Sony also released CJ7.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "When Seth, Evan, and Neal said they wanted Stephen Chow to be part of 'The Green Hornet,' it was a fantasy. Now that it's happening, it's almost too good to be true. Stephen's been a very important part of the Sony family for many years, so it's truly serendipitous for us to be moving forward with him directing the movie and starring as Kato."

Chow added, "I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously, I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true. I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years. I'm looking forward to working with Seth, Evan, Neal, and the team at Sony, and I'm eager to get started."

Moritz said, "'The Green Hornet' is a dream project and it's come together in a dream way. Seth will be fantastic in the lead role, and Stephen was the only name on the list for Kato. The material is a perfect match for his sensibilities -- Stephen in the director's chair is the best thing for the film."

Rogen said, "Stephen was always my and Evan's first choice for director and to play Kato. We just hope that he never finds out we're not the Wachowski Brothers."

Ori Marmur will serve as the Executive Producer of the film.

Chow previously told us of his interest in the project. "When I saw the program, I thought it was a great role and thought it was outstanding, because I'm Chinese and it's Bruce Lee, but I'd be happy to play that role," he said.

Later, we asked Seth Rogen about approaching Chow, who answered, "It's a very intense action movie and the relationship between Green Hornet and Kato, a lot of comedy comes from that. At first actually, we weren't even sure going in we could be more of a Jet Li type guy who maybe isn't the funniest guy in the world, but he's physically very impressive, or whether it would be more of a Stephen Chow type guy who can do martial arts, but clearly has a sense of humor. In the version that we've made it seems like a Stephen Chow type guy would be more suitable for the role. Again, until they officially greenlight it, it's hard to make any of those decisions."

Chow Not Directing Green Hornet

Stephen Chow has decided not to direct Seth Rogen's superhero movie The Green Hornet, says Variety.

However, the Kung Fu Hustle helmer will still appear in the film as the eponymous hero's sidekick Kato. The directing split has been put down to creative differences.

Based on a radio serial from the 1930s, the Green Hornet is a newspaper publisher who devises an alter-ego to fight crime. The most famous adaptation of the character came in the form of a '60s TV series which starred Bruce Lee as Kato.

The Green Hornet is expected to arrive in cinemas in 2010.

It's about time we had some Green Hornet news and it's not very good!

Nicolas Cage to Play the 'Gangster Villain' in Green Hornet

Whoa, I don't think anyone saw this coming? Variety reports that Nicolas Cage is in early talks to play the "gangster villain" in Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet being directed by Michel Gondry. Cage will star alongside of Rogen and Cameron Diaz, who was announced a few weeks ago, though the role of Kato is still open. They also say, as we reported earlier today, that "the picture is moving full steam ahead for a fall start date." Cage last starred in Knowing and recently finished The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Bad Lieutenant, Season of the Witch, and Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. I definitely think this is going upset a few people.

Okay, so I've defending Green Hornet all along, and I think it'll still be good, but this makes me a bit weary. I started losing faith when they cast Cameron Diaz and now with Nic Cage, I'm just not sure anymore. Maybe, just maybe, Gondry could help save his career. I'll argue that Alex Proyas' Knowing helped get him on the right track, but it didn't take him too far. I imagine he's going to be a goofy villain, hopefully not too much like Samuel L. Jackson in The Spirit, but maybe this will be a role that shows he's not that bad. Who knows? Either that or this is the first sign of a potential disaster in the making.

I thought Chow was still in that role?

With Stephen Chow officially off The Green Hornet movie, many have suggested that the task of recasting Kato was nigh-impossible. But director Michel Gondry may have found the actor to step into Chow's domino mask.

Asian news outlets are reporting that Korean actor Kwon Sang-woo is currently in talks to play the Green Hornet's hyper-competent sidekick, alongside a bumbling Seth Rogen. Kwon is known largely as a heartthrob in Korea, having starred in many a romantic soap opera, but he's also has a modest bit of on-screen martial arts experience, thanks to roles in the fantastical Volcano High and gangster-themed Once Upon a Time in High School.

Several outlets have noted Kwon's imperfect English might be the major obstacle to his being cast, but even if he manages to break the language barrier, his action resume doesn't begin to approach Chow's, and it's going to be tough for him to live up to the expectations everyone had for Chow's performance in the role.

Cameron Diaz Joins Cast!

Earlier this month we wrote that Cameron Diaz is in talks to star in ?The Green Hornet.? Today it?s been confirmed that she will play the female lead, a reporter and love interest, in the Sony Pictures comedy superhero project.

Diaz will co-star with Seth Rogen as Lenore Case in the movie about a millionaire playboy who becomes a masked vigilante by night aided by his sidekick Kato.

?Lenore, yes, and I think that?s all I can tell you or else I would have to kill you. I read the whole script. I know what happens exactly, and I?m not telling you,? she told MTV.

?The Green Hornet? will be directed by Michel Gondry from the script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Gondry described Diaz?s role San Diego Comic-Con as ?a crime specialist? and ?a big fan of the forensics TV shows?. Her character will unwittingly help the titular hero and his associate on their first series of missions.

It was earlier announced that Nicolas Cage is in early talks to play the gangster villain.

?The Green Hornet? is set to start shooting in the next few months and Sony planning to release it on July 9th, 2010.

Columbia Pictures confirmed today that Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou has been cast as Kato in director Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet. Stephen Chow was previously attached to play the role that was originated by Bruce Lee.

Chou is joining Seth Rogen, Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz in the July 9, 2010 release.

Hollywood Snitch learned from "Battlestar Galactica" star Edward James Olmos this weekend that he has landed a role in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet. The site reports:

I spoke with actor Edward James Olmos yesterday at Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con. Among discussing his past ("Blade Runner") and present ("Battlestar Galactica" and the upcoming TV film), he dropped he said of his future plans that he will be joining Michel Gondry's "The Green Hornet."

"I'm on my way to do 'The Green Hornet,'" Olmos told me. "It'll be a lot of fun with Seth [Rogen], Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz."

There's no word yet on what role he might play. The studio announced on Friday that Jay Chou will play Kato in the July 9, 2010 release. Michel Gondry direct.

[Coming Soon]

Last month it was reported that Cameron Diaz was in talks to join Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet as his love interest. We haven?t heard anything since, but now Cameron has confirmed that she?s ?in? to Splas Diaz has officially signed on to play Lenore ?Casey? Case, historically Britt Reid?s beautiful secretary and one of the few people aware of the fact that Reid (who will be played by Seth Rogen), spends his off-hours fighting crime as the Hornet. In the soon-to-shoot film, however, Casey will be reimagined as a forensics-TV-show loving amateur sleuth who remains in the dark about Green Hornet?s true identity?and is smarting from a recent divorce.

Diaz also told us that she recently met the new Kato, and that they?re hard at work in pre-production for the Summer 2010 flick. ?Seth and Michel are awesome, and Jay Chou too,? she said. ?We?re having a really great time.?

Diaz has been hard at work reviewing the past incarnations of Casey, but explained that it will ultimately be a modern, very different take on the character. ?I think she?ll have her own little [differences],? explained the ?Charlie?s Angels? series star. ?I?m going with Michel, because this is Michel?s movie and Seth?s movie. So, I?m playing the character that they wrote for us.?m playing the character that they wrote for us.?

We also heard last month that Nicolas Cage was in talks to play the villain. Now that the casting seems to be getting finalized we could hear confirmation on that soon.

    • This got me thinking, would you rather a self driving car prioritise protecting its passengers or everyone else? I'd choose the one that keeps me and my kids safest. At some point, these cars have to make those choices already, don't they? Wonder if we have a way to find out what way they lean.
    • The proportion (or number of iterations) has nothing to with this aspect of Copyright I am describing. In short, it doesn't matter how many times the manager tells you to change something or how. Your work product is always YOURS until and unless you then assign that to the person representing the client/company, usually for financial compensation -- either in salary or as a subcontract work for hire payment. if iterations determined copyright, then businesses would have learned to just keep making changes until they could claim they owned the copyright, without having to compensate the artist for their work. And that would be BAD. The only place where the amount of changes does have a role is in how much does a human modify a previous public domain work (from any source) before it is considered fair use or their own work, etc. For example, if a human makes substantial changes to a public domain (re: AI, by definition) work, then they can then claim that derivative work as their own...but NEVER the original version, of course. That's why anyone can make a movie about Dracula, for example, as long as it is based on the public domain novel, but not if they take new ideas from copyrighted movies made afterwards. As one of the people who personally advised the US Copyright Office on their recent ruling on these very issues, be assured that I specifically used the terminology precisely -- though I made it simple enough for laymen to understand it. If I made this confusing by doing so, I apologize. But, to be clear regarding your assumption that I would agree to your second statement that I quoted above -- the answer is NO. If AI does the work, no matter how much "direction" you give it, it cannot be copyrighted. All AI generated content is in the Public Domain and therefore the copyright cannot be assigned to ANYONE, even you -- until and unless substantial modifications are made to it BY A HUMAN BEING (yourself or a contracted artist/writer/etc.) and then that copyright on the derivative work is legally (in writing) transferred to you. This is a critical distinction. And it is important that people, especially AI sloppers, understand this. For example, YouTube is not paying AI slop generators for the copyright, etc. of their AI slop. What YouTube is doing is sharing AD REVENUE for permission to publish your AI slop. Copyright/ownership/rights never come into it. Importantly, that means that anyone can copy any AI slopware on YouTube, etc. and rehost it anywhere they want, even back on YouTube, and there is nothing legal that YouTube can do about it with regards to copyright protections, ownership, DMCA, etc. Anyone is legally free to use any AI slopware in any way they want. When this ruling was pending, I warned Disney legal of all of this before they did their OpenAI deal -- that it would literally dilute their entire IP portfolio forever. They ignored that warning for the PR and stock bump. But that is why, when the ruling came down last year, Disney quickly extricated themselves from that OpenAI deal, even eating the initial upfront fees -- followed closely by OpenAI ending their entire AI video generating business model. They adjusted their PR release dates to make this less obvious to shareholders, of course. Phew. I hope that this clears up the key distinctions for you and anyone reading. If you have any additional questions or even hypotheticals about AI and Copyright, please feel free to ask.
