Windows Explorer memory usage problem

Hi guys,

I have noticed recently that my work PC has had some very excessive memory usage from windows explorer (see attached image)

I have known it get above 500MB as well.

I have run AV and Anti spyware/malware and found nothing.

Any ideas as to why it's getting so high?

just guessing

maybe loaded with bundleware, plugins, etc.

maybe you have too many files on hard drive

i wouldn't care if my comp didn't slow down

Just curious but how much memory do you have and how high is your pagefile set to?

if have noticed explorer does this when you send many (ie, thousands) of files to the recycle bin. you have to kill explorer before it goes back down to normal as it just feels so sluggish until you do.

Try downloading Process Explorer and tell us how many processes are running under Explorer? Also how many processes are running total?

2GB, page file set at 3Gb

I do deal with thousands of files, but in the case above I had not been doing much.

Anyway, I re-installed XP. I needed to partition the drive anyway so that all the images I work with were separate from my OS partition.

Everything seems to be OK now. PC been running all day working with images and thousands of text files - explorer using around 50MB

I can't verify this, but someone has told me that if you keep a lot of documents in "My Documents" that this could cause a increase of memory usage of Explorer.

I think you are confused. if you keep a lot of files on your DESKTOP your explorer.exe'sory usage can increase. This is why i always advise users to keep a clean desktop.

explorer memory usage can increase as the more that runs under it not what is stored in a folder,the more it has to do and run the higher the usage.
