Question about student discount.

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm probably going to go and buy a macbook pro. Now, I know the current model that I want and want to get the student discount.

The problem is that I was a student at a univeristy in canada, but am now studying abroad in Europe. So, I still have my student card and they have all my information at the university. Of course I haven't attended that uni for 2 years, but am I still eligible to get a student discount while I am in Canada (since that is where I live)?

Also, do they have student discounts for students attending the University of Warsaw?

Thanks guys :)

Hey, I have a similar problem:

I live in Germany but I study in the Netherlands. As I prefer a German keyboard I went to the German Apple Store but there it says that only students at German universities would get the discount. So can I just enter the name of my Dutch university and everything will be ok? Or do I have to go to the Dutch store and explain that I want a German Mac?

Actually, that shouldn't really make a difference for Apple anyway, should it?

I didn't really bother because I wanted to buy a MacBook Pro in late summer - but why not ask my question here while the threads active ;)

Honestly? There is no verification of student status required. :)

Visit the online store for your University and order from there, no requirement to prove your status.

That's exactly what I did. I was a legitimate student at a local community college when I bought my MacBook Pro, but as I took online classes I never got an ID. I didn't really want to go and one, so I just bought my stuff online. Sure, it took two weeks to get here from Singapore or wherever, but it was worth it.

You should be able to order from the German store without any issue. They won't ask you beyond selecting the store which school you are attending so you can select any local (German) school to where you live to order the machine you want.

Does this mean (theoretically) that anyone could claim a student discount by quoting a college that they either used to go to or live near to? Is there really that little verification?

Hypothetically since I know no one would EVER be that dishonest (Pfft) that is correct.

When I bought my Mini and APP at one of the Apple Stores in MI, they did ask to see my student ID, online is a different story, as I they never verified my status when I bought my iPod from them.

Thats correct, local retail locations will ask for a Student ID or student number for their system where the Online Store does not. :)

I got a MBP for college, same situation. I'm going to study in the states, but I'm in Hong Kong. I ordered my stuff online and I paid for the ipod touch first (back to school deal), then a scan of a college ID will allow for the rebate. This might be different in other places.

its not really much of a discount. like the item without tax

Its good to save money where you can save it :)

Thank you so much Cara. :0

Also, I've realized that they're now opening a new apple store in my city( its at our largest mall in our province Alberta at West Edmonton Mall) So thats going to be awesome and Might have to camp out for it perhaps ;)

Always glad to help... Seriously, don't miss the grand opening...free shirts!

Not true. Several friends in grad school had to fax in a copy of their Student ID before Apple would process the order, yet others didn't. Of the two times I purchased a Mac with a student discount, I had to verify once and didn't a second time. Per several that I talked to at Apple, they randomly ask for student ID cards.

Very odd, I've never been pinged, nor have my circle of outside work friends who all use the Apple Student Discount Program to get their equipment...admittedly some haven't been in school for 20 years! So out of probably 15/30 purchases we've never been asked when purchasing online.

Perhaps certain schools request validation for their records? I just don't see Apple being so inconsistent.

If you can remotely connect to your University you should use the Apple Store for Higher Education, you get quite a bit more off compared to the Apple Store for Education.

You should get the same prices if you select your educational institution from the Education List...

Not in the UK it appears, the browser window on the left is selecting the educational institution from the list, the one on the right is connected to the higher educational store from a University IP address.

I don?t see why they would have two stores if they both charged the same prices?

Would it be possible for you to PM me the two URL's so I can take a look at this? I know here in the US things are the same.

For example, say I'm attending Arizona State University. The store is the same if I go to it from home or if I do it from a store in the Campus Resource Center...no price changes, they both route to the exact same page.

This is interesting!

If you go to http://store.apple.com/uk you can select Education Store on the left menu.

Once on this menu you are able to choose:

Apple Store for Education which links to http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukInd

Apple Store for Higher Education which links to http://apple.procureweb.ac.uk/

(If you are not connecting from a University ip address you will get ?HTTP Error 403.6 - Forbidden: IP address of the client has been rejected.?)

I hope that?s some help to your investigations, I didn?t believe Apple would give you even more discount for just been a student at Uni, however my friend got more discount on a Mac Mini.

If you can?t get on the Apple Store for Higher Education, give me a PM and ill send you some screenshots or something.

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
    • eh I'll wait for the June 2026 MVS ISO downloads which should be coming out next Tuesday June 16 and possibly contain build 8655 instead of 8653
