pwnz0r3d
Get the HD 2600 XT. The 3850 is a better bet, but if your budget is really tight, the 2600 is next on the list. You could take the Nvidia 7600 GS into account too, but i've only spotted the 256 MB version in the same price range. In any case you need a PSU of at least 350W. What's yours? +shift. MVC Posted July 3, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 3, 2008 Look on the side of your PSU. There should be a label with the rail and amperage distribution. +shift. MVC Posted July 4, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 4, 2008 250W SHOULD be fine...but then again I don't really know (I'm going with this on the assumption that you have a generic 250W). If it is generic, then I don't think it'll provide the max 250W you need. Maybe get a 430 or 500W Antec Earthwatts if you want to run a 3850? Would give you a bit of space for future upgrade too. Dr.G
how much do powersupplies go for? I looked at mine and it had a ton of wires comming out of it so I'm not sure if I could wire it. +shift. MVC Posted July 4, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 4, 2008 It's actually quite straightforward. You only need to attach the wires that you need, not all of the wires coming out of the PSU. As for how much do PSU's go for, there are $20 crap PSU's that you don't want to $50 budget but quality PSU's (such as the Earthwatts I recommended) to $70-150 PSU's. Dr.G
would a radeon X1950 pro be better than the 1650 but less than the 3850? I cant seem to find a X1950 pro any where and I thought that I could get the X1950 and not have to upgrade any other of my system parts. +shift. MVC Posted July 6, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 6, 2008 If I get a card below 3850 am I going to have to worry about not having Dx10 support for games like d3? Blizzard has said that D3 will not require DX10 already. However, almost all of the newer games being released will require DX10 support. +shift. MVC Posted July 7, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 7, 2008 I have no idea about Spore as I haven't paid much attention to that game in general. But I know for a fact that D3 will not require DX10. Andre S. Veteran Posted July 8, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 8, 2008 X1950 AGPs have disappeared. Your choices are the HD 2600 XT and Pro, the HD 3850, and older cards like the X1650 or X800, but those are seriously behind in performance. Dr.G
Can my CPU even make good use of a 3850? I mean it will be pretty pointless buy a 3850 and my system can only make use of a little of its power. +shift. MVC Posted July 8, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 8, 2008 That's what we were talking about when we mentioned waiting to do a full system overhaul first. +shift. MVC Posted July 8, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 8, 2008 It would work....my suggestion was to grab a temporary video card (really inexpensive one) just so you can have video for now and wait for the money to build a new system. But in the meantime you probably wouldn't be able to do much gaming. There has to be something out there that will run on my system that will enable me to play WoW and Obilvion. I doubt that my system can handle more than a 9800 pro.
