'Friends' movie within next 18 months?

Recommended Posts

A big screen adaptation of US sitcom Friends is reportedly being lined up for release within the next 18 months.

According to the Daily Mail, the spinoff has been inspired by the success of the Sex And The City movie.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow are all apparently keen to reprise their roles in the film.

  • Could this work?
  • Are Ross & Rachel on another break?
  • What happened to Joey since his TV show ended?
  • Do the kids have Chandler's sense of humour or Monica's OCD?
  • Did Phoebe ever learn how to play guitar properly?
  • Have the gang aged too much?

In Pictures: 'Friends' then and now

(Great picture of Matt Leblanc - he may need some hair dye to reprise the role...)

If this is true, then woohoo! I can't wait! Love Friends, I still watch the repeats on E4!

They all look fine in those pictures, but Matt and Lisa have definately aged A LOT! Still, nothing a little make up won't fix! :p

Not going to happen. Not with the original cast anyway. Does anyone remember why the show got canceled in the first place? The actors wanted a huge amount of money per episode. The budget for this film would have to be like $500 million just to get the original cast

I would love it, but I will only believe it when WB officially announces it. Schwimmer didn't seem too keen on the idea when he was on The View about a week or so before Sex and the City came out.

As for the others,

Courtney Cox's series just got canned

Matt LeBlanc had pretty much been M.I.A. since Joey was canned

Lisa Kudrow & Matthew Perry have neither moved on to anything huge either

David Schwimmer seems more content on directing now

Jennifer Aniston hasn't really had any huge movies but it major tabloid fodder

Most if not all were happy with the way the show ended and don't wanna wreck it. I really couldn't see a movie being worthwhile story wise unless they do a death of one of the friends, but there are quite a few movies about a group of friends getting together after one dies, so I dunno if that would be very original.

I think they should leave it as is.

FYI, they reason they ended the show, is because a few of the cast members (especially Cox & Aniston) wanted to start their families and spend some time doing that, and they all agreed as a group they didn't want to continue the show without some of the friends.

Slightly off-topic, but I must have been the only person who never was a fan of the series.

Believe me, you were not. I have tried so many times to watch it and discover what made it so popular. To this date (and despite the endless loop of repeats) I have yet to discover what it was.

It always struck me as typical American drivvle, that, as is often the case with American programmes, went on for far too long, carried along by its own sense of greatness. It's the same with House, CSI, etc. etc. They always do it. Sometimes, you just need to stop things before you do them to death.

CSI I can understand because they've had 8, 9 seasons, but House? There's only been three seasons of House and it is still great. A critical hit.

There's no point in canceling these shows though as long as they're popular. Studios and networks are in the business of making money, you guys do realize this right? As long as they're making money on the show, why cancel it?

I just never "got" friends. A bunch of people generally whining, moping and making drama's out of small things. They never seemed to have any real stress in their lives, but seem to always have things to bring them down. And a never ending source of funds.

The one where? The one where I was usually out having a social life rather than religiously following 10 years of dross!

I think it a British thing, we have tv episodes which are normalyl either 30mins or 1hr without ads a lot of the time, whereas you guys have 20mins and 40 mins shows in 30 mins and 1hr slots respectively. A series (season) for use is normally 6-8 episodes whereas the US market tends to have anything between 12-24 episodes per season. the UK never has mid season breaks neither.

I suffer the same issue with House as I do with all other similar things from the US. It's just rinse and repeat each week, to the point where it becomes pointless watching it.

In this latest UK series, they had a really great chance to freshen the mix, but instead, they didn't have the balls, and kept the original characters on the sidelines, just in case. That showed me that they didn't have enough confidence in the stories. And please, must someone suggest Lupus each and every week? It's become a standing joke in our house as we watch it.

Don't get me wrong, it's still capable of raising a laugh from me now and again, but whereas I would once never miss it for anything, these days I have a "If I catch it, great, if not, I can guess what happens" attitude. But alas, I've steered completely from the original topic. The only people who would really benefit from a Friends movie are the Friends cast who, as far as I can see, have been largely unsuccessful since it ended. Can't think why... :)

P.S. Goldgunner has hit the nail on the head in the above post. He's dead right. It just doesn't work as well in the UK.

If they don't rush it and it has a very good script then it will be a huge success.

For example, Matt Le Blanc's spin-off series Joey was pants because it was rushed out as soon as Friends ended. Fraiser on the other hand was great as a spin-off to Cheers.

I never really liked the show. Not that I hated it either. It was just kind of there. What I did like was that the actors never let individual egos get in the way. They all negotiated together and got paid equally and even made sure the rest of the staff got paid well. That is pretty rare anymore. If they want to do a movie I'm sure it would be profitable. I probably won't pay to watch it, but more power to them. Those guys and gals probably deserve their success more than most.

    • Exactly. They won't go 100 because current gen consoles are simply too old for any groundbreaking graphics or gaming experience otherwise. They will go with standard (console) price 70 or go with 80 if they really want to go premium. Of course they will have more expensive options too with some useless cosmetics as always.
