Fan speed increasing/Decreasing in Ubuntu 7.04

Recommended Posts

I use Windows Xp and Ubuntu.

When i use Ubuntu the speed of fans increase and decreases and make a lot of noise..

Also the mouse just stops and starts moving as a movie does when we try to play it through a scratchy Disc..

my sysem Specs are:

Intel dual core 3.0 Ghz

512 RAM

Intel Original 945 Motherboard

arnd 700 Mb SWAP

What could be the problem?

Maybe XP lets it get hotter before kicking in the fans?

I'm not experienced with temperature control/laptops. But if you have some sensors running, you can see your temps in Ubuntu and try to note when they kick in, and when they slow back down. Compare to XP, if you want to match.

It could also be that, for whatever reason, your CPU speed regulator is off, or is set aggressively to keep your speeds higher. I think the daemon for that is powernowd, but don't quote me on it.

Any linux distro puts more CPU load than Windows XP or Windows Vista for that matter. I have had temps hit 78C on my laptop in linux distros. It tops out at 70c on XP and Vista. Of course, there are nice 3rd party tools to undervolt my procesor in Windows, wish there was something like Rightmark's CPU utility for linux... :(

My fan runs constantly in linux...Not good for laptop's life for the CPU temps to be that high!

True also compiz puts a big foot print in the CPU, I had that happened in Ubuntu a lot in the begining an in XP only once... (the difference is that Windows = BSOD, Ubuntu = Only freezing until 10 seconds of cooling..)

lol what? so now ubuntu is hardware proof as well?! come on ...

to the OP, are you sure it is not the video card fan? I have raden 3870 and every time I boot into ubuntu or log off it the video card spin to top speed unrelated to heat.

Compiz would only load the CPU if there was no capable GPU, or you weren't using the 3D drivers, so all the calculations for effects had to be done by the CPU instead of the graphics card.

It is no coincidence that the same thing happens in Windows with Aero. ;)

    • There is a huge portion of the Windows users who use a cooperate provided computer, which means they are using an organization provided username and not a Microsoft username. Also, they users may not be allowed to install a 3rd party browser, so this would be perfect for them.
    • COBOL itself is not the problem. Code that has been bodged and kludged over decades but still somehow runs is probably the sort of Gordian knot that even AI can't necessarily unravel.
    • Nice devices but my Surface Pro 9 got bricked from a Windows Update efter only three years. Never buying a device from MS again.
