Jay-Z: 99 problems but a chart entry ain't one

The Glastonbury effect: Jay-Z's headline set leads to a spike in sales, but his Oasis cover helps Noel Gallagher too

Jay-Z has appeared in the mid-week UK single charts following his headline performance at last weekend's Glastonbury festival. His track 99 Problems is set to score a top 25 position on downloads alone, four years after it was released.

The Rick Rubin-produced song, which features the chorus "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one", was performed as a retort to Noel Gallagher following the Mancunian singer's comments earlier this year that the Jiggerman's appearance at the festival was "wrong". After his own unique rendition of Oasis' Wonderwall, the rapper launched into a furious, and very popular, performance of 99 Problems. His single Encore, which closed the set, has also entered the Top 40.

However, Jay-Z's mocking of the 1995 Oasis single has had a knock-on effect too. Wonderwall has also experienced a sales boost that will likely see it resurface in the Top 100. Elsewhere, What's The Story (Morning Glory), the album from which the single is taken, has seen a sales increase of 200%. Other bands who are benefiting from a successful weekend at Glastonbury are Elbow, the Raconteurs and Editors, all of whom have seen huge increases in album sales.

By the way, did anyone go out to the concert?

Well they say you learn a new thing everyday and that day I learnt Jay-Z can't sing to save his life, he was atrocious. Stick to the rapping dear boy :pinch:

 Here's something new for today: Jay-Z wasn't even trying to sing, he did the song to mock Noel Gallagher because of the comment Noel made about him.

Meh, I love Oasis... from what I?ve heard Noel Gallagher say on Russell brand's radio show his comments were completely exaggerated.

Noel has always been an ego-centric prick.

Remember his 1996 "Has beens shouldn't be presenting f**king awards to gonna-be's. I'm rich and you're not." comment to Michael Hutchence (INXS lead singer)?

Is Noel some kind of hate figure now for saying what everybody was already thinking?

Why yes. Didn't you read the (now closed) thread C-Squarez started about Jay-Z performing at Glastonbury?

Watch how they embrace him. This is a monumental event and it just shows that there is space for everyone musically. This is a big triumph for hip hop and a big loss for those little racist bastards!

You're not wrong there

"For the record," Gallagher said today, "I like Jay-Z. That's my opinion." The 41-year-old guitarist went on to clarify the situation for reporters. Apparently, it was the fault of the quality press, not his big mouth. "The broadsheets get hold of it and have me going down Hyde Park Corner blasting and slamming. If it offends people, don't ask me any more questions."

You missed the point of Jay-Z singing the song.

Noel Gallagher made comments about how Jay-Z shouldn't be performing at Glastonbury and making a big stink about it all. This was Jay-Z's way of poking fun at him. It wasn't really meant to be serious.

    • 26H2 absolutely will support ARM Windows just not on devices that came with 26H1. This is evident by the fact I am running 26H2, which on my MacBook Neo and Surface Pro 12 (inch), within a VM.

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
    • Microsoft, totally not confusing /s 25H2 - Current for non-Arm based Windows 26H1 - Current for Arm based Windows 26H2 - Only for non Arm Windows
