Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend

Recommended Posts

It's just called "Source" or "Source 2007" by Valve, calling it "the orange box engine" is just a user thing.

The engine update came with the Orange Box (Single Player code with EP2 and Portal, multiplayer code with TF2), so that's how it got it's name.

Actually, if you look at the SDK, it is listed as the "Orange Box Engine".

Hmm, haven't played DOD:S in forever. Might have to play a bit this weekend (already own it, and have for nearly 2 years now).

For those who haven't played it or are on the fence... BUY it! It's a fantastic game and really not all that difficult to get into (I'd say an hour or so and you'll have the hang of all the weapons).

Its quite unique. You can't bunny hop, in fact jumping is detrimental as it eats your stamina bar so you have less to sprint with (although it replenishes) and you can't jump very high anyway. The guns also have a more realistic recoil and cone of fire meaning there is a little bit of a learning curve to master the various guns in DoD. Laying prone and kneeling improves accuracy but leaves you vulnerable obviously because you are still. Sniping is also more realistic and your scope vision sways and sways more if you stand. I think its one of the more difficult games to really master but once you get decent enough its a very rewarding game. I have been playing it since launch and I love it.

You mean like how you can't miss if you're zoomed in?

It's a bit of a joke that your accuracy is 100% if you're zoomed in. It lands exactly where the crosshair was.

And how the SMGs can't hit what so ever. Bullets fly off at right angles with those things.

It's a good game though. I wasn't really able to get into it much since my FPS would be so low on my old PC, it would be pretty hard to play.

Grenades are freaking hilarious though. It's so good getting a multi-kill with a nade .

I tried the game out with an open mind yesterday for about 30 minutes, and I absolutely hated it.

IMO, TF2 is far superior in every way.

What I did not like:

1.) I could not find any instant spawn servers (I despise spawn delays)

2.) I hated the maps. On just about all the maps I played, there is this one section where it's basically a dead-man's zone. I found almost no areas where you can sneak around to.

3.) I did not like the class restrictions that most servers had.

4.) I found the game to be buggy. There were quite a few instances where the game would just pause. I wouldn't be lagging, and I don't have this issue at all with TF2 or any of the other games in The Orange Box. Unfortunately, this would occur near a lot of battle scenes.

There were other small gameplay things I didn't like about it either.

That is just my $0.02.

I think the guys at Valve sit around and have a few beer and laughs and throw together scrapped games laying around to serve up for free weekends to make a few million. Good way to pad their retirements. Seriously I have allot of respect for Valve and their developement teams. Top of the line group. Can I play this in single player version (off line) or am I forced to go online and get my *** waxed every 10 seconds. Thanks for the free weekend.

haha call me old school but Day of Defeat Source is basically all I play OL, I didn't like TF2, got sick of BF2, CoD4 sux0rs imo etc...DoD is where the real gameplay is at...that said I am not a big fan of some of the changes...

-kill cam needs to go back to tf2 and stay there

-rocket is too noobed out now

-side arms are too accurate

I could live with the side arms and semi's being more accurate, if it brings in more players then cool. But the kill cam just destroys any sense of immersion and totally adds to the anger when your fragged.

Wow. I played DoD:S again for the tenth time just to get into it and I finally did. I used to hate the game with a passion but now I love it. I don't know what to say but it's so good now. Try it again if you already dislike the game. (Y)

The 5$ offer is available until the 10th of July. Hopefully my debit card will arrive by that time.

Duno if they offer them where you do, but could you pick up one of those pre paid visa cards you can get. Pretty sure I've seen them at seven Eleven stores here for various amounts.

Something like the bellow this

Might be worth a look if you cant get the card within the time period.

I personally hate how inaccurate the sub machineguns are. It's ridiculous. I thought the rocket was fairly challenging to use at times, but sometimes it is easy.

The more I play DoD: S, the more I like it. I like it more than CS: S... never got into that game... but not as much as TF2 at all. Some of the maps are just boring, but many are pretty fun.

I don't like how there's no medic class or anything, because then as soon as you get into red you might as well charge mindlessly.

Usually though, if you get hit; you go down in that hit.

And this is why I think the sniper is too accurate. You can kill people way before they've been able to aim at you, since all you have to do is pre-aim. Plus, with quick switching and quick scoping you can reel off shots so fast. It's fun to go on rampages with the sniper, makes people rage so much.

(To counter a sniper, unfortunately, you have to take up the SMG class so you can set up a load of smoke grenades. It's hard to shoot what you can't see.)

Ain't that how snipers are supposed to be?

This game is definitely worth $5 :)

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
    • Microsoft, totally not confusing /s 25H2 - Current for non-Arm based Windows 26H1 - Current for Arm based Windows 26H2 - Only for non Arm Windows
    • After I installed those, my older but capable Win 11 laptop (16GB RAM) reported it as 26H2 26300.8697. Then I installed it on my big laptop (128GB RAM! Hehe sorry), it reported it as 25H2 26220.8690. Ugh. Do I have to switch Insiders channels from Release to Beta?
