Screenshots Tip

Actually this tip is out of date...

Anyone with a Fresh Install of OS X 10.4 or 10.5 will notice their Screenshots capture in TIFF or PNG (Depending on Version) and not JPG, JPG hasn't been the default screenshot method since 10.3 if memory serves me right.

Your memory is perfect dear Cara :)

In Terminal...

defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat JPEG

I did that, but I can't change it back to PNG =\

Isn't it...

defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat default or defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat

The 'default' argument does nothing (still JPEG) and no argument after AppleScreenShotFormat does not work: Rep argument is not a dictionary.

Hrm, I'll have to go dig that one up, I know there is a way to reset it aside from going into the pref file and deleting the line...

It seems "defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png" in conjunction with killing SystemUIServer worked in giving me back PNG :)

When i did "defaults read NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat" it would say PNG but "defaults read com.apple.screencapture type" would still say "jpg" even after i did "...NSGlobalDomai AppleScreenShotFormat PNG" *shrug*

I've always used TinkerTool or Cocktail to change the file type, although I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to use PNG in the first place.

+1 PNG for the win, however it does have issues with Windows XP + IE 7 sometimes

But thats their problem
