Charging PS3 controller while PS3 is off?

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry if this has been asked, I've been looking online for an answer to the question but haven't found anything. I was just curious if the controllers charge if they're connected to the PS3 while the PS3 is off.

Also, an AC adapter came with my Logitech Cordless Vantage headset, and I tried to use that to charge my controller, but the LED lights didn't light up so I assumed it wasn't charging.

If my PS3 is turned off I usually just plug the controller in my computer USB

So I guess that means the PS3 doesn't charge it then?

Would be nice with a feature like the 360, to enter an active standby mode until the controller is done charging, then shut off.

Wow, I didn't know the 360 did that, that's pretty neat... guess I never realized it though since we charge the batteries on one of the battery chargers.

Yes, the PS3 wont be charging it then :p

You should spam the Playstation Blog with the "active standby mode" thingy

I used my computer or my cellphone charger to charge the controller usually.

Well I wish the AC adapter for that logitech headset would charge the controllers but it doesn't seem like it is. I may just have to leave the PS3 on since I have a laptop and it moves around the house a lot.

If you have a Wii, people sometimes use that.

Well, I do have a Wii but unfortunately I'm missing some of the critical accessories (ac adapter, video cables, etc. since I let my roommate borrow it and he forgot to bring those back with him)... but the Wii will charge them while it's in standby? If it does that's cool, and thanks for letting me know as I will have a fully functional Wii sitting next to the PS3 soon (hopefully).

I sometimes charge them on the Desktop when It's on. There is a way to have the a computer supply voltage to the USB ports even when off. It is a Bios Setting and may require setting a jumper on the motherboard itself. I tried doing this for a IR receiver, and I believe it worked for a while =P

Oh, and there are USB power adapters you could buy that plug into wall outlets.

AFAIK - I watched a YouTube video of a PS3 HDD change and the guy mentioned (and showed) that his Wii was being used to charge his PS3 controller. I think it does work on stand-by as its (IIRC) always on. Apologies if I'm wrong, but what's the harm in trying? :)

Do you know if the USB power adapters have to be designed specifically for the PS3 controllers? I have two USB power adapters, one that came with my wireless PS3 headset and another that came with my Zune dock (I know neither are meant for this), but neither worked... actually, I'm not sure I tried the Zune plug now that I think about it...

I tried it once, but if my memory serves, your PC doesn't charge the PS3 controllers. Usually USB charging happens ovver the +Vcc-GND USB pins (the outermost pins, which provide 5V at up to 500mA, I think). Because that happens over the standard USB pins, there's no drivers required. With the PS3 controllers, I think the USB host (PS3/PC) needs to initialise charging mode, which requires a driver.

The last part is something I think I remember reading somewhere. I may have made it up.

A standard plug should work. If those don't work, then I'd assume they're not standard.

    • Microsoft, why can't I just turn off Copilot on my MS account (in order to stop OneDrive from wanting to summarize everything, ahem) in a way that doesn't break OneNote instead?
