Cyanide911
My windows(C:) drive automatically just fills up. I'm just browsing firefox, then suddenly I get this error about low disc space(Less than 200mb free). Then I do a disc cleanup, free some more splace, but still I get this message after a few days. First I thought Google Desktop's Index was the culprit, but I have moved it to some other drive, still this is happening. Please try to help... tsutton
Load up Windows Explorer. Right click the Drive C Select Search Click on "When was it modified" Select "Specify dates" Make sure that "Modified Date" is set with the date set as today for "From" and "To" Click Search button It will tell you what is being created - check the filesize, take action. +DKAngel Subscriber² Posted July 5, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted July 5, 2008 20 gig work a windows partition isnt very big at all, yourpagefile could be expanding or temp files being kept, go and resize the partition :/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647298-c-drive-automatically-fills-up/#findComment-589533489 Share on other sites

Just try changing the pagefile to the other partition. That will free up a good bit of space to start. +allan MVC Posted July 5, 2008 MVC Share Posted July 5, 2008 You can also limit the size of system restore, which is very likely the problem. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647298-c-drive-automatically-fills-up/#findComment-589533729 Share on other sites
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted July 5, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted July 5, 2008 you only saved 20GB for windows and program files? that is very little for XP Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647298-c-drive-automatically-fills-up/#findComment-589533734 Share on other sites
Mouldy Punk
Correct me if I'm wrong (rarely, I am :p) but he said his 20GB C drive was for windows. He didn't say anything about program files. I have windows, my documents and program files on 3 separate partitions. My windows partition is now 20GB, and it's only using 10GB of that. If the OP doesn't have his program files on the same partition, 20GB should be more than enough. I found a pretty funky free program that'll scan you drive and display in nice pretty coloured blocks how much space each file on the drive is taking up. It's called WinDirStat - it might be worth you scanning your C drive and see what is taking up all the space. jesseinsf
Please tell us how much RAM you have and if you have System Restore on and your Page File set to have Windows Manage it? And let us know if you have Hibernation active in the power settings. :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647298-c-drive-automatically-fills-up/#findComment-589533808 Share on other sites
General Disarray
check that hibernate isn't turned on, this can use quite a bit of space Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647298-c-drive-automatically-fills-up/#findComment-589533826 Share on other sites

Hibernation is turned on, though I don't use it at all. Turn off Hibernation in power management. I would also move the Virtual memory file to another partition or HDD and make the size for largest and smallest the same recomended number (It will tell you what the recomended number is). Also, does anyone else use your computer? If so, they may have turned off System restore. If they didn't then I hope you have not been infected or hacked and would scan for Viruses as-well-as check your firewall settings (making sure it's on). Good luck. spacesurfer
my xp partition is 12 gb and i found that sufficient for windows and programs with much space left over. only recently i have the need to make it bigger to about 20 gb because of video editing now. i don't see how you can need a 20 gb+ partition unless you install a whole lot of unnecessary programs. i tend to keep my windows partition lean as i can.
