C:\ Drive automatically fills up

Recommended Posts

My windows(C:) drive automatically just fills up. I'm just browsing firefox, then suddenly I get this error about low disc space(Less than 200mb free). Then I do a disc cleanup, free some more splace, but still I get this message after a few days.

First I thought Google Desktop's Index was the culprit, but I have moved it to some other drive, still this is happening.

Please try to help...

Load up Windows Explorer.

Right click the Drive C

Select Search

Click on "When was it modified"

Select "Specify dates"

Make sure that "Modified Date" is set with the date set as today for "From" and "To"

Click Search button

It will tell you what is being created - check the filesize, take action.

20 gig work a windows partition isnt very big at all, yourpagefile could be expanding or temp files being kept, go and resize the partition :/

Resizing the partitions seems like a lot of work for something so simple. 20gb is more than enough.

Just try changing the pagefile to the other partition. That will free up a good bit of space to start.

Correct me if I'm wrong (rarely, I am :p) but he said his 20GB C drive was for windows. He didn't say anything about program files. I have windows, my documents and program files on 3 separate partitions. My windows partition is now 20GB, and it's only using 10GB of that. If the OP doesn't have his program files on the same partition, 20GB should be more than enough.

I found a pretty funky free program that'll scan you drive and display in nice pretty coloured blocks how much space each file on the drive is taking up. It's called WinDirStat - it might be worth you scanning your C drive and see what is taking up all the space.

Please tell us how much RAM you have and if you have System Restore on and your Page File set to have Windows Manage it? And let us know if you have Hibernation active in the power settings. :)

I have 1GB ram, Sys Restore is off for all drives (I dont know why) and my Windows Virtual Memory for C drive is 768-1536mb(manual). Hibernation is turned on, though I don't use it at all.

Turn off Hibernation in power management. I would also move the Virtual memory file to another partition or HDD and make the size for largest and smallest the same recomended number (It will tell you what the recomended number is). Also, does anyone else use your computer? If so, they may have turned off System restore. If they didn't then I hope you have not been infected or hacked and would scan for Viruses as-well-as check your firewall settings (making sure it's on). Good luck.

my xp partition is 12 gb and i found that sufficient for windows and programs with much space left over.

only recently i have the need to make it bigger to about 20 gb because of video editing now.

i don't see how you can need a 20 gb+ partition unless you install a whole lot of unnecessary programs. i tend to keep my windows partition lean as i can.

    • Remarkably based article from Garter - apparently there IS someone working there that actually understands mainframe systems.
    • Calling it TDS doesn’t answer the question: why did this site skip prior UFC games but review this one, at this exact political moment?
    • Its the timing of its release, mixed with the timing of the review mixed with the timing of the event, when this site never reviewed previous iterations of this game that I could find.
    • Instagram just got "a long-requested feature" by Hamid Ganji Instagram has finally added a new feature that has been "long-requested" and it allows users to write an individual caption for each image or video in a carousel. The feature will start rolling out this week, and it’ll be available to all users. Previously, Instagram only allowed a single caption for all regular posts and carousels. This made it harder for content creators to describe every scene in a carousel and often forced them to write longer captions. However, with this new feature, every slide in a carousel can have its own caption, which can be viewed by swiping left or right. To use the feature, when writing a caption for your post, select “Multiple captions” from the dropdown menu in the caption area. You can then write unique captions for each slide. By swiping through the carousel and selecting individual slides, a dedicated space for writing captions will appear. Instagram says the feature will help audiences get the right context at the right moment. The ability to assign a unique caption to each slide in a carousel could be particularly useful for content creators and brands on the platform. Instagram says the feature will begin rolling out this week. The new feature appears to have been well received by Instagram users, many of whom have been requesting it for a long time. However, users are now asking for additional features, such as the ability to add new slides to a carousel after it has been published. Instagram has been introducing several useful features lately, but users who want access to additional tools and perks can subscribe to the platform’s Instagram Plus offering. Priced at $3.99 per month, Instagram Plus includes exclusive features such as 48-hour Stories, more detailed post analytics, and the ability to tailor posts or Stories to specific audiences. The subscription includes 11 new features in total.
