Echilon
For the last week or so, my server has been acting strangely. Everything's set to start automatically on boot, and I generally only put the display on to check things. I've been noticing that when the display's turned on, there's no signal, yet the machine responded to pings on the network and MySQL and Apache were accessible over the network. However, when I tried to VNC into it, after the password authentication nothing was displayed, and it seems to disconnect from the network from that point and need rebooting, after which everything worked as usual. This happened maybe 2 or 3 times over the week, but today it's refusing to boot. There's no signal from the graphics card from power on and no beep code. The network card shows up as a connected link on my switch, but I'm not sure whether that's just because it's plugged in (the fans come on and the drives spin up, but that would happen even if there was no motherboard. I'm thinking this could be some kind of motherboard failure, but I'm really not sure. Could it be anything else? Specification: ASRock ALive SATA2 GLan 512Mb GeForce 7900 GS 2x1Gb DDR2 (Corsair) 3x500Gb HDs in use Netgear GA311 Gigabit Ethernet (Though the onboard ethernet is used) Seasonic 600W Modular PSU There's also an unused Adaptec 2610SA RAID card in one of the PCIe slots, but that's never caused any problems and has some unpowered backup drives plugged into it. I've cleared the BIOS with a jumper, but still no luck. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647311-no-signs-of-life/ Share on other sites
utdarkviper
Remove all unnecessary components and try booting each time. Also try swapping out RAM. Try to narrow down each individual component as the culprit or not to make things a bit easier to figure out. Echilon
I know that's a standard diagnostic routine, but is there anything else which could cause the system to just not do anything? Echilon
Ok, I'm at a loss. I've unplugged everything, bit by bit, and it doesn't even do anything when just the motherboard and CPU is plugged in. No beep code, nothing. Do I have a dead CPU or a dead mobo? clotz2000
I'm gonna go with a dead Mobo. I believe you might still be able to get to the BIOS although no further if the CPU was dead, not positive on that, kinda depends on the setup. Do you happen to have any extra mobo's to throw in there or borrow from a friend to test? Echilon
As I was swapping the power supply out (last component left) I noticed the clip had broken so the motherboard lead was loose. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647311-no-signs-of-life/#findComment-589536248 Share on other sites
