Newbie Help needed on Overclocking a Q6600

Recommended Posts

Guys, can anyone please help me, becuase I haven't got a clue. I'm trying to overclock my Intel Q6600 - I have a biostar GF7050V-M7 Motherboard with AwardBios v6.00PG.

On my main bios screen I have a number of menu options - I presume the one I need to go into is 'Performance Booster Zone'

Its currently set to the following:-

Current CPU Freq, MHZ Setting 2400.0 Current value 2400.0

FSB - Memory Clock Mod - Auto

FSB - Memory Ratio - Auto

FSB (QDR), MHz - Auto - 1066.7

Mem (DDR), Mhz - Auto - 800.0

Memory Timing Setting - Optimal

CPU Clock Ratio Unlock - Enabled

CPU Clock Ratio - 9 x

CPU Voltage - 100%

DDR Voltage - 1.85V

NB Voltage - 100%

VTT Voltage - 100%

What I want to do, is to increase my CPU Freq to 3mhz

Can someone please give me a step-by-step guide on how to do this, through my bios?

Thanks in advance.

Another guide to try is here: A beginner's guide to overclocking

Covers just the basics. Added plus is for owners of Gigabyte motherboards as the BIOS screens match, at least in my case. My BIOS is also Award BIOS v6.00PG, so that guide should cover you (give or take a few labels named differently).

I also overclocked my Q6600 to 3 GHz. In short, you do the following:

- Increase the FSB to 333 MHz. With a CPU multiplier of 9X (which I believe is locked to no more than 9x for CPUs such as the Q6600), that equates to 2997 MHz.

- Play around with the memory ratio so that the FSB * ratio = speed of your RAM, which in your case is 800 MHz. So the memory ratio should be 2.4.

- Keep the PCI-E frequency locked to 100 MHz, if an option exists.

- Up the CPU's voltage by a small bit, only if Windows BSOD's with an error similar to "A clock interrupt was not received..."

Thanks for the info, but that's just confused me even more now - does anyone have any ideas on what I can set my settings to?

there are no magic numbers to just get the Q6600 to 3GHz

every chip is different. settings that work for someone else's Q6600 won't necessarily work for yours. if you want to overclock your chip, you have to read about how to overclock, then keep trying different settings till you get your system stable.

The thread there is titled: HOWTO: Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals) - A Guide v1.7

I admit the subject matter might be a bit dense for the average user here at Neowin, but if you familiarize yourself with the terminology (Wikipedia helps a lot), that guide is EXCELLENT.

    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
    • Windows 11 KB5094126 BSODing, freezing, forcing BitLocker lockout, breaks OneDrive, and more by Sayan Sen Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 last week as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. While Microsoft has so far not acknowledged any major problems with the release, some users online are running into problems. These range from OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, BitLocker recovery lockouts, to blue screens and BSODs. The most common one seems to be happening with HP systems wherein affected users say they hit 0xc0430001 BSOD (blue screen of death) error code after the KB5094126 update. We wonder if this could be related to the recent bug we covered on HP devices wherein the ongoing Secure Boot certificate updates are leading to similar issues. While we are not certain, users affected by this issue likely need to ensure that the boot.stl file is included on the installation media (such as a USB installer or ISO), if the above-mentioned dynamic updates are deployed. If this file is missing, computers may fail to boot from the installation media and could display the error 0xc0430001. This STL file is used by Secure Boot to verify that the boot files are trusted, so it must match the same Windows version and system architecture. To ensure the file is included, Microsoft recommends using the Update WinPE script, which automatically updates the image and handles the required files. Alternatively, you can manually copy the boot.stl file from the Windows\Boot\EFI folder on a Windows device and place it in the matching folder on your installation media before deploying the updated image. Aside from blue screening some users also note their systems have been freezing following the update. This could be happening to Lenovo PCs specifically. In the case of the OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, a user figured out that there could be a conflict with UAC. He explained: "Okay, so I did some digging, and in our environment KB5094126 breaks OneDrive and Dropbox in Explorer. I went through all our GPOs and found out that the combination of disabling UAC and having my user being a local admin breaks OneDrive in Explorer. ... If I enable UAC again, then it works, even with KB5094126 still installed." Hopefully, Microsoft will look into these issues. • It is when it's a desktop in my house though for a PC that's lightly used and not really important when it is. If it was a laptop, it would be a different story. The real solution is varied and begins starting at post #22 in that thread.
