Xbox 360 Purchase

Hey guys I need some convincing.

I was a sonyfan with the PSX and the PS2, after that I've been a PC gamer. Recently I got a great deal on a nice 37" LCD and my GF likes to play gaems with me...I sorta want a 360 but can't come up with enough reasons to buy one.. Also the PS3 is too expensive. Help?

Well you are about to open the biggest can of worms you can imagine with this topic that's for sure.

Having owned both, I currently only have the PS3 as my 360 got stolen :( I found the 360 to have a much better offering of games and X-Box live is much better than the PS3 network in pretty much every aspect.

The PS3 had the blu-ray player advantage, I wanted a blu-ray player and needed a gaming console so it just made sense to get the PS3 when my X-Box got stolen. But in term of games and online play in my opinion the PS3 is lagging, I hope that like the PS2 did things start to catch up and the PS3 becomes a monster system but that's a waiting game right now.

the fact that it has 123144352142x as many games is an indication that the 360 is better in terms of gaming. It is cheaper, especially the elite and depending where you buy it, you may get a free game with it, for example, here in Canada, if you buy the XBox 360 Elite, you can get GTA IV or COD4 for free. With the XBox Marketplace, you and your gf can download old favourites, like Sonic 1 & 2, and play them. I am unsure if this is available on the PS3. XBox's also come with a 3year automatic warranty.

Bring on the flame war!

If you cant get enough reasons to buy one in your head, then obviously its not right for you, were not sales people here, and were certainly not going to convince you.

You have to look at this yourself, decide is it right for your and your girlfriend, will you get your use out of it, or will it end up on Ebay in a few months time as an unwanted purchase. Either way go look at both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, Probably a Wii is better for you and your girlfriend if your a casual gamer which you sound to be, plus there probably more games on the Wii she will like, and its the cheaper of the current generation consoles, and very good fun to play.

The problem with buying a Wii, is that there are only 2 games worth buying that will interest us both. That of course being Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. I'm not going to buy a system with only two worthy games. So that's a pass.

I'm quite aware that the fine members here at neowin aren't sales personnel, I was just asking a question whether or not a 360 would be a good choice in this gen. Last gen was such an easy pick but this year being much harder. That's why I had asked about getting a 360, I know there's a few fans of the 360 to help persuade me into buying one.

Oh btw, thanks for the tips guys, keep them coming. =D

Exactly what I was about to say even thought it sounds like he has his mind made up which in that case he was reinforcement for his decision.

I'm not trying to be rude, but when you come in with a certain attitude, I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise and tell you things you might not want to hear.

So you aren't buying a Wii because it's not worth it to you, and you aren't buying a PS3 because it costs too much, what do you need convincing of. If you two want to game, then getting a 360 is a no-brainer. It's a great system, with great games, a great online platform, and a lot of other excellent goodies all bundled in a nice white concave package.

So to sum up: Buy an Xbox 360!

How's that for convincing? :p

If you want to know something from my own experience: I've spent over $1500 on Xbox 360/related expenses and in my opinion, it's easily been worth every single penny, and I'm a college student who doesn't particularly have a lot of money to spend in the first place.

-Spenser

That's correct, but the RROD is probably the only thing you'll need a warranty for, and that's not even as true anymore.

-Spenser

So Spenser will personally guarantee it from any other defect for 1 year? I'm just teasing, short of Live costing $ (call me cheap, I don't care) and the uncertainty of RROD and all the hassles with it, MS lost one purchase. I'm not at all turning this into a bash session, simply voicing my opinion.

Look at the reviews of all the top games for the 360 and if they at all interest you, then by all means, get one. (but there's a price drop looming, so, if you can hold out, do it since you'll save enough to maybe get 1 more game)

@OP

you've not really specified what you want out of the console other than games, which is of course the most important feature, but take into account:

DVD playback?

Blu ray movies?

online play?

type of games you want?

you like stuff like achievements, matchmaking etc?

are you happy to pay subscriptions?

want a movie download service?

web browsing?

Media streaming?

I've done a lot of investigating into both consoles as I look to buy one. My only advice isn't to just go on which has the most games, but which one has the most games that you like (or are likely to). I listened too much at first to "the Xbox has more games" only to realise when counting the games for each console, that most of the exclusive games on the Xbox are weird/alien shooters, which I have no interest in at all.

^^^@the last two guys. I think he knows all of that. He seemed to have ruled out getting anything but the Xbox 360 and just wanted convincing on whether or not to get a 360 or get nothing. No need to continue this though - the OP said this thread could be closed, so I think we answered him sufficiently already.

I take it you're lumping Mass Effect in that comment?

Believe me that game is amazing! :)

    • Snap Inc. launches new SPECS augmented reality glasses (for 'just' $2,195) by Aditya Tiwari Image: Snap Inc. Smartglasses powered by augmented reality are the latest fashion because the smartphone market is slowly reaching saturation. Snap Inc. announced its latest AR-powered smartglasses, called SPECS, that aim to strike a middle ground between underpowered AI glasses and heavy headsets you can't wear all the time. Available in two sizes, Snap SPECS are made from high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer and feature removable inserts to support prescription lenses. Its 47mm model weighs about 132g; the bigger 52mm model weighs 136g. Snap Inc has been spreading the word about the new glasses for a while now. Earlier this year, it even spun off its smart glasses team into a subsidiary called Specs Inc. Its proprietary LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display delivers a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. Snap says the device gives the feel of a 24-inch desktop monitor when you're working, and of a 115-inch home cinema screen placed about 10 feet away when watching a movie. A pair of custom stereo speakers and 6x high-SNR MEMS microphones are built into the temples of the smartglasses to deliver open-ear audio while you cast a screen, stream content, open a whiteboard, or collaborate with others. Snap Inc. patted itself on the back, saying the smartglasses don't need tethering or a puck to connect to a computer. Under the hood, SPECS draw its power from two Snapdragon processors: one for computer vision and another for running Lenses. The device supports fast hand tracking, low latency, and responsive interactions that help digital content feel anchored in the real world, according to the company, which claims that SPECS can "deliver 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency." The smartglasses offer up to four hours of battery life on a single charge while providing AI assistance, Bluetooth notifications, Lenses, audio/video playback, and more. The battery life could jump to 20 hours of mixed use when the charging case is included. Image: Snap Inc. You can view and interact with AR Lenses anchored directly to the physical world around you, and an on-board AI assistant uses the camera to see what's around to answer questions or provide real-time help with tasks. Snap Inc. noted that it filed more than 7,000 patents during the development of SPECS. It's trying to build the required digital ecosystem around the smartglasses, and said that developers have already published hundreds of Lenses for SPECS. Moreover, their electrochromic lenses use the same technology available in Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows, enabling them to shift from clear to tinted in just 10 seconds when you walk out of your house. Snap SPECS are now available for pre-order on the official website with a $2,195 price tag ($200 refundable deposit). The smartglasses are expected to ship in the US, UK, and France during the Fall this year.
    • Sound Booster 1.13 Build 575 by Razvan Serea Increase volume on your laptop. Boost the volume of even very quiet speakers. Raise volume above maximum. Letasoft Sound Booster can be used as an extra amplifier when the volume of the program you are listening to is too low for comfortable listening and you feel that your PC’s speakers can produce a louder sound. This can be the case when the audio or video has been recorded at the level below normal. Or, for example, when the other person’s microphone you are talking to on Skype, is not working properly. There can be a plenty of other reasons why the sound is being too quiet and there is not much you can do about it except buy external speakers. Sound of any application that is being played in the system can be amplified up to 500%. Letasoft Sound Booster can raise volume of programs like web browsers, on-line communication software (Teams, Discord, Zoom), any kind of media player or games. Simply put, volume of virtually any program that can play any sound in PC, can be boosted to a comfortable level with Letasoft Sound Booster. You can control current volume with the pop-up slider from the system tray. Alternatively, you can assign system-wide hot keys for increasing and decreasing, and use them when you need to adjust volume Letasoft Sound Booster constantly monitors current gain level and prevents samples from clipping, thus reducing all major sound distortions. • I own these and the normal QuietComfort ones from Bose. The QC are amazing and I want to love these, but for the life of me, I have a terrible time getting them attached to my ears.
