[Rumor] New PS3 model coming next month

Recommended Posts

It looks like it's time to the PS3 SKU dance again. An alleged Wal-Mart spreadsheet sent to Joystiq states the 40GB PS3 "will be replaced with [a] new model in early August." What this new model will entail is unclear: it could be a new 40GB bundle, or it could be something different altogether. Perhaps we'll find out more at E3?

This isn't the first time hints of a new system were revealed through retail channels. The 40GB model is currently the cheapest model of the PS3, retailing for $399. It is the only model of the PS3 that does not feature any backwards compatibility support for PS2 titles.

Hmmm.. wonder what it will be? :D

I don't think we will get full backwards compatibility model yet. Sony has strayed away from that if you ask me.

If we see backwards compatibility, I think it will be software and will work on all PS3 models including the 40GB. The day that comes, who knows?

I woner if we'll get this new SKU down here at a reasonable price. Although the Australian dollar is slightly weaker than the American, the difference in price is astronomical. Here to 40Gb Model is $680 in most places. In fact for mine with a game and an extra controller, it cost me $800

Bet you it's just a movie/game pack at a lower price or something.

Doubt Sony can drop as low as $299 in one hit, so they'll probably drop to $399 and offer a game or two inside.

Or yeah, just a DS3 bundled console.

^ That really wouldn't be that bad of an idea, a 299 price point would be fantastic for Sony. Not as much in terms of a gaming console but in terms of a Blu Ray player. Still the PS3 is the cheapest player around and if they could hit that 299 price they would sell a hell of a lot more and further spread the adoption of Blu Ray. Gaming aside I can see that being a very smart move for Sony. Afterall they introduced the PS3 more as a Blu Ray player than a gaming console.

Bring back the 20GB! (Y)

Probably too small for games that require installing, but without the wireless and etc. I'm sure Sony could afford to drop it at $299 or $230.

I would rather just see the 40GB hit $299.

Removing wireless is a bad idea. Fudging features that this generation of games needs is annoying for consumers, especially those that need wireless, who then need to go and spend $$$ on a wireless addon (1st party addons = terribly expensive).

Removing BC was an annoyance for some, but PS3 games don't need BC. PS3 games do however need an internet connection if you want to play online, and the PS3 needs internet for PSN.

The PS3 already has multiple models with various BC compatibility, let's not start introducing/reintroducing models that have less/no features over the others (N)

    • I'd say the first one failed to be as popular as Apple anticipated, but the easy adjustment here is to make fewer of them next time around. It would only be a "flop" if it isn't possible for Apple to recover the design and factory tooling costs given the number of units sold, which I doubt would be the case. It isn't like no one bought them; it just failed to become the new hot phone of the year.
    • You're right that it does not follow the plain meaning of the word, but in this context, it is a legal term defined in 49 U.S.C. Kind of how "wire fraud" laws apply even if a physical wire was not used. Given that it is codified in law, and it isn't just automotive journalists that don't understand evolving technology, I highly doubt congress would change a well understood term just because technology makes the term slightly less actuate.
    • This is exactly why I keep saying we are not ready for human free self-driving. These little "bugs" are may seem like random one-offs. There was also the Waymo that drove between police with drawn weapons and the suspect they were pointing them at. From a software perspective it is easy to understand how those extremely rare situations may not have been programed for, but that is the point. If AI needs to be told to watch out for every possible contingency, then it can never be successful. There will always be the possibility of a first encounter that the AI needs to understand to avoid.
