Why have a VGA port on an HDTV if it causes a hum bar?

Recommended Posts

I just got a Magnavox 32" 1080i,720p HDTV from SamsClub. It has a PC (VGA) port but when I hook up my pc it has a hum bar so what's the point of having a VGA port on the TV then?

I get the same thing via s-video. I was told HDMI to DVI fixes the hum bar issue but have yet to buy a cable. My idea was to hook PC to TV so I can watch DVD's until I can buy a Blu-ray player.

I'm not sure. I have a 1920x1200 monitor, and the picture quality is pretty close to perfect with the VGA cable, but under certain conditions (Certain static images) you can notice some artifacts.

Of course, I have a DVI out, so it's no big deal. I was just curious.

what is a "hum bar"?
wtf is a hum bar?

I'm guessing its a scanline bar

i've seen something like it before (full image is drawn but a much brighter bar of light in a certain spot on the screen) usually when the screen is out of sync with the source (tuning megadrive/nes consoles to a tv and being a bit off :p)
