My Mac Experience

Recommended Posts

Hmm I add one but I don't see them on my contacts when using Adium.

To be honest my only gripe with OSX is the LACK OF DECENT MSN iSight support.

How hard is it Apple hmm?

Don't worry. Right now Microsoft is going to change the video protocol in the next version of Messenger in favour of the same one they use in their communication server product - so it makes little sense developing support for a soon to be obsolete protocol.

The Mac team apparently already put the new protocol on the mac client (which is why the corporate mac msn now has video), for once we're waiting on the windows client to catch up as far as I know.

Nice review! I am a windows only user but its nice to see a company having such wonderful support.

So it seems to me the best company with customer support is pizza places (just call them and say something is wrong and they send u a new pizza right away) and apple these days... Kinda sad... that is the only ones with that level of support and understanding.

Logitech sent me a new webcam and told me to keep the one being replaced. Microsoft sent me a new Zune when my previous one would not shut off properly (I didn't have to beg for a replacement either. They were nice and straight to the point.). So it's not just apple.

So you're an advocate for segregation, eh? Maybe Quillz found the post the same way I did... It's on the front page recent post list.

that is exactly how I found this forum. The front page.

It looks like the vertical strips issue is non-existent with the new models. I think I am safe, I will go to the apple store ASAP and get my new MBP. Will keep you guys updated! Thanks for all the answers.

Those are affecting the latest model Penryn's. Some people who are experiencing them have only owned their MBP for less than a week.

Apple will be updating their models soon, and I would definitely wait for them to do it. For the specs-to-price ratio, the MBP is currently not in a favorable position. An equivalent Dell would give you twice the memory, and 120 more GB of space at 7200 RPM. It's roughly $200 less than the MBP.

Apple should be updating them within the next month. Unless you need it ASAP, I would wait.

If it is as soon as next month I will definitely prefer to wait. I already do have machines that I use switching to Mac is purely for pleasure and not having to do with annoyances of windows (this is coming from a .NET developer who loves the platform).

I heard pretty good things about OS X. Also I am considering doing development on the iPhone so a Mac will be helpful. I currently own a Dell laptop, although it's still working after 2 yrs of heavy usage (main machine) it is too bulky, I don't like Vista too much and I am too lazy to format my drive and switch back to XP. I want to experience OS X hence my decision to go w/ a MBP.

After reading this post, I'll give it the benefit of doubt and will wait until end of August to make the purchase. Thanks for your replies.

I know the feeling. I have completely abandoned my desktop in the past year. I have moved to using my laptop as main computer, with an external monitor and keyboard/mouse when I need to work for extended periods and it is just fine. I don't do any gaming. For my programming purposes it is more than enough.

Considering I have a 2-hour commute to work every day, not having a laptop is out of question for me. Although the weight of the MBP will most likely force me to get another lighter laptop like a sony Z sometime in the next year.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.

    • Not sure what country you’re in but in many countries you can absolutely jail the sellers behind businesses… in fact I’d say in most countries you can do that
