just got myself a macbook pro (yay!) and i was wondering about the battery life.

will my battery life decreases if my battery is fully charged and my power adapter still plug in? will the adapter keep charging when my battery is full or it will just run thr adapter and not from the battery?

is it better to unplug my adapter and just use my battery when fully charged?

thx alot

Congrats on your MBP! 

The MBP, and all Apple Notebooks, come equipped with batteries have smart chips which prevent the battery from overcharging and lessening the lifespan of your battery.

You can leave the Notebook plugged in at all times without any major effects, just please remember to perform a battery calibration every month. :)

Just to echo what Cara has advised and from my own personal experience, I leave my MacBook Pro plugged in with the AC adapter 99% of the time (because I usually use it at home on my desk), just remember to fully drain the battery once to keep the life of the battery from deteriorating. I have done this now for 7 months and my battery life is the same as the day I bought my Mac, I usually get ~5 1/2 to 6 hours out of my battery at least.

Enjoy your MacBook Pro! :)

Do you think that will solve the problem I told you about the other day?

Can't hurt to try! :)

Well, sort of worked... :/ Instead of 97% beign the max now its at 99%

I will do the calibration (along with a full system repair) every month still, just to extend my laptop life to the max.

Very similar to what I do for my personal equipment.

What do you define as a "full system repair", just out of curiosity?

1.-Battery Calibration

2.-HD Cleaning (erasing old or unneeded files)

3.-System's Cache cleaning

4.-Defrag

I wrongly used the word "repair", "maintenance" its more appropiate.

Ah, I see. I usually do a battery calibration at the end of each month, along with a quick cleanup and clear caches/old log files, however I haven't defragmented my hard disk, however I just purchased TechTool Pro so I think I may see what it offers for optimization and maintenance (as I just recently converted my MP3 collection to AAC to save some space, which basically involved creating 4000 new files and deleting 4000 old ones...)

I found that when I try to calibrate my battery, even after I got it replaced under AppleCare, my Macbook never goes to sleep successfully. Either it cuts the power before initiating sleep, or it initiates sleep but it doesn't complete the process before the power cuts out.

Either way, it's not good. That's why I've given up on doing a full discharge and I just go down as low as I think I can before plugging the laptop back in again.

Maybe it's the Macbook itself, or maybe I just really suck with batteries.

    • There really isn't anything magical about the low latency profile, other OS's do this as well. All they're doing is using your CPUs boost clock options in a more smarter way.
    • So we shouldn't have the option because of people using their laptops on battery? OK? LOL
    • If you hear that fans for a limited time the CPU spikes to open a app I don't think the problem is with the software. There shouldn't be enough time spent at the higher clocks to produce enough heat to peak the fans. Maybe it's time to crack those dell laptops open and clean them out?
