Ive never liked Netgear products, always struck me as cheap. But my cable company offered me a wireless one for ?40. I needed one to network computers but didnt have the cash. They would put it on the next bill so thats why I accepted. Its a Netgear WGR614 V6

Right from the start it was a bit slow. But now its awful.

I have a laptop connected via wireless, my iphone and my pc which is wired.

Most of the time using the internet on my pc the internet will stop. I cant get any websites (yet oddly a torrent will download at full speed).

The laptop also looses connection to the internet. Also my iphone is effected as when I SSH into it using wireless, WinSCP constantly looses connection and the iphone shows no wifi. About a minute later all the above problems are fixed but its an intermitted problem which I cant solve.

Ive tried changing the channels etc and no luck. I can understand wireless reception perhaps failing, but a wired?

The signal to the wireless is so poor, if you go into another room the signal pretty much dies.

So theres 2 questions. Is there a solution to this bitch of a problem? Or can anyone recommend me a really good router?

Ive had a D-Link before, but that just stopped working at random one day, hence getting this one.

Tried checking for firmware updates?

Also it could be your home, with my netgear the wireless will only work in certain rooms and it's annoying as hell.

Because this router is like a special one from my cable company, its got its own firmware. Version 2.something. The one of netgears site only goes up to V1.

Saying you can't access sites but torrents download fine sounds like a DNS issue to me. Have you manually put in the DNS servers of your ISP into your modem/PC?

I have setup a static ip address on my pc. However, surely that shouldnt effect my iphone?

Will sound silly I know but I had the exact same problem on my machine. Turned out to be nod32 version 3, went back to 2.7 and all was well. Nod are aware of this problem but so far they ain't fixed it. I have a netgear router and it's fine. DG 834PN

I will try going back to 2.7 and seeing how that performs.

Right never mind. I'm going to get another router.

I tried moving the router to another location to improve wireless, but that didnt work. Its the same. Walk a couple of rooms away and the signal dies, no matter what channel.

Can anyone recommend me a really good router to buy in the UK?

Ive got my eye on this. What do you all think? Its the wireless signal I need mainly.

If it's a good strong signal you're after, your best options are either a MIMO or a Draft-N router - linksys (esp. that model) are good value but for a little bit more you can get a really really strong signal...

I've just found this one, it's a tenner more (also with free delivery), but is far superior to your initial choice, personally I'd spend that little bit more and go for it - and it uses draft-N and MIMO.

After much problems with it I decided to buy a new Linksys WRT160N ?50

I installed it perfectly, pretty easy and connected my computer, xbox 360 and connected my iphone and laptop via wireless.

Before I connected my upstairs computer via cable, I had the router downstairs connected to the laptop via cable so I could install it quicker. Once done, I popped outside the house and down the end of the garden and tested the iphone. Full strength!:DD

I then connected my upstairs computer and connected the laptop to wireless.

About 20 minutes later I went to the french windows, which is about 2 rooms away from the router and was horrified to discover my iphone had no ****ing signal. Thats a good 6 meters less than I previously tested at the end of the garden. To illiminate my iphone I brought out the laptop to the room as well, signal strength was poor at best and no connection at worst.

Now Im really ****ed off. The exact same signal problems are happening with this brand new router. Im dumbstruck as to what it could be causing this problem. But so far, apart from the new look, I may as well have set light to ?50.

Any ideas?

Anyone??

This problem has be baffled. But a slight update.

I tried unplugging all cables and just plugging in the routers (both of them) in various places around the home. The problems seemed to be the same. Poor signal. But oddly, it seemed that things got worse as soon as I plugged in my upstairs computer via Ethernet cable. I now have 2 routers and none can give me a strong signal, even though I only bought this Linksys router because the box stated it had superior signal strength. So theres either something in this house blocking the signals or I have bought 2 faulty routers. Which I don't believe.

Ive tried resetting the Linksys to factory settings and scanned again. I do get a signal at the end of the garden but its intermittent and when I connect my upstairs pc, thwe signal strength seems to die. Please I hope someone can shed some light, Im pulling what little hair I got left out!

Finally, when I got the router, the firmware was 1.54 or something, dated Dec 2007. On the linksys site I found version 1.02 but that date was 1/8/08 so I assumed it was better and updated. Now the router states the firmware version 1.02 was made Nov 2007! so I've actually downgraded?

Just wondered if you'd had any luck with this...

By any chance, is there anything majorly electrical, or a big body of water (like a water tank) in "line of site" between the router and the devices you're trying to connect to?

By the sounds of it the range of the router is fine - however, something is blocking the signal from getting to that other room. Find that, and problem solved.

According to the open letter, “this action has taken the best models away from [cybersecurity] defenders” who now can’t use the models to find vulnerabilities and make their software and products more secure. “To pull the best capabilities away from defenders without a good reason when our adversaries are rapidly advancing is dangerous,” read the letter. On Friday, the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to limit the export of Fable and Mythos, citing national security concerns, without explaining the specific reasons behind the order, according to Anthropic. In response, the company suspended access to the models to all users worldwide.     https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/15/cybersecurity-vets-protest-dangerous-us-government-ban-on-anthropics-most-powerful-models/
