Hi everyone,

Ok, just got back from travels, and ive noticed my internet is VERY slow.

My house has a WR54G router downstairs, which I think doesnt work very well, im quite unhappy, and almost next to it is a Wireless Signal booster, also from linksys. Upstairs is yet another signal booster, and then in my room, which is almost next to the booster, is my laptop. I get 4 bars in Vista (on the wifi icon) yet the internet is INCREDIBLY slow, and from time to time, firefox cannot even load the page....

What do you think the problem is?

Ive tried resetting my modem, to no avail...it goes on and off from local to limited or no connectivity, to saying its connected...

its really getting on my nerves aswell, so advice desperately needed...

Thanks,

Medking

works both times, as an ethernet of course...

is there any chance packets are being lost when broadcasted?

because when i close my door, the signal stays the same, just the speed and response of the internet is slower and more limited...

I think the problem is all the signal boosters you have.

I?m guessing signal booster 2 is connected to signal booster 1 which is then connected to the Wifi router, If I remember right when using a signal booster your only actually getting half of the speed your connected at so if you were connected at 54mbps you would be only getting 27mbps, then adding in the next signal booster that makes it 13.5mbps presuming there is an excellent signal between all the signal booster?s.

Why do you need a signal booster right next to the router? That seams kind of pointless to me.

You could have the best signal possible in your bedroom but if the connection between signal booster 1 and 2 is rubbish so will your connection.

If your connection is fine when wired up to the router I would start by getting rid of the signal booster next to the router and try placing just one signal booster in the middle of your house and see if that helps.

hm, ok, ill try that, how can i check to see what the booster is connected to?

im gonna do a whole reset of my network today, and reconfigure it all, because its just not working for me, or anyone in the house for that matter....

does concrete have a huge effect on the signal? because the whole house is concrete, like the walls, floors, everything...

It depends on the signal booster/router, I use to have a Linksys WRE54G range extender and this told you the Mac address of the router it was connected to when you looked on its configuration webpage.

When I used to have a wireless network the router was at one side of the house then we had a range expander in the middle, the range expander got a good connection to the router and expanded the range to the other side of the house where the router barley reached. When placing the range expander I had my laptop and looked what sort of signal I got where I was going to place the range expander. Once I found a spot that got a decent signal I tried the range expander there, I found it worked well for me on top a the worktop in the kitchen.

We have since got rid of wireless and wired the house up with wall points in each room connected to a gigabit switch, if possible I would recommend a hard wired network any day over wireless.

    • Kind of glad I upgraded to S26 Ultra 1TB this year, with trade-in and discounts it cost me €1199, that's only €119 more than the S23 Ultra (256 GB) cost me. Last time I bought it via my phone provider outright, now via Samsung.com I reckon the S27 series will be more expensive too.

    • I cannot believe this is a news post from Neowin. This should be embarassing, coming from a "senior editor". Is it your first day using Windows?! Maybe it's time to find a new Windows news site.
