Budious
If anyone at Microsoft had one bit of sense, DirectSound would be reimplemented to complement XACT, not deprecated, and DX11 backported to XP. PC gaming for DX10 and beyond is dead until this impasse is dealt with. HawkMan
Comparing OpenGL to DirectX is like comparing a Car to a Car Engine. OpenGL stands for "Open Graphics Library", the X in DirectX isn't just to sound good, it's because DirectX has a LOT of parts to it - DirectAudio, DirectInput, Direct3D, etc. Well, yeah it was. That's why DX11 was supposed to be named WGL or WGF(don't remember) to indicate it's an entirely new graphics library and not DX(thoguh it support DX9 through a inbuilt sandbox/emulation), but it was dropped so that people would recognize what it was and they planed to just name DX11 WGL/WGF2 instead guss they're just sticking with DX now. but since DX10 DirectX is no just Direct3D actually, the sound and input parts are no longer there. input is split into it's separate system wich was added allready with the xbox controller and GFW for XP. and DirectAudio is replaced with OpenAL since Vista, and theat new game audio thing they're working on. As for openGL gaes, yeah id is pretty much the only ones that really stuck to it, but I seem to remember even id saying their next engine will at the very least be both DX and OGL or just DX. Though I may be wrong was a long time since I bothered paying any attention to id. I just wish I still had DirectSound hardware acceleration. That's my biggest complaint about Vista. Sometimes to redesign a new and much better audio system, you just have to throw some old **** away, DirectSound was one of them. and I'd rather have the new audio syste than DirectSound and the Creative EAX monopoly. leesmithg
It doesn't look like its reporting the correct version, run dxdiag, that tells you the real version. Yes it shows DirectX 10 under that. Denis W. Veteran Posted July 23, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 23, 2008 I do have Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP1 installed andmy system reports DirectX 9 only, thats why I asked. Thats odd... because my fresh copy of vista off of a retail cd (just installed yesterday actually... had to reformat) also reports DX9. However I only have a card that supports 9 and not 10. Yeah, I think that's why my laptop (w/Vista) reports DX9. For all you three guys: I hope you're aren't checking DirectX versions using the control panel item; that CPL is outdated by at least four years. Example: This is what it reports on a PC with a 8800 GT. On my laptop with a DX9 7400 Go, it also states DirectX 10 in dxdiag. In any case, Vista users should have nothing to worry about. You still get all the updated DirectX 9 runtimes released every couple of months, plus DirectX 10 support if you have a DX10 GPU, and whatever software updates they do to DX10 and now DX11. edit: stated already :argh: Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/650884-dx11-revealed-fully-compatible-with-dx10-hardware/page/3/#findComment-589578183 Share on other sites
sialivi
I'm confused... DX10.1 have features that DX10 doesn't have DX11 runs on both DX10.1 and DX10 hardware DX11 is fully backward compatible with DX10.1 and DX10 ... wouldn't that mean that the DX11, running on DX10 hardware, would include the DX10.1 features DX10 is missing? Richard Hammond
AFAIK DX10.1 runs on DX10 cards. Yes it does, DX10.1 makes features mandatory that DX10 already supports, so all DX10 cards out support DX10.1. HawkMan
That is completely stupid, oh here is 10.1 but you cant have that and that. err, not it's not, would you rather DX10.1 games wouldn't run at all on your 10 hardware rather than just disablign a few new features ? it's the way DX has operated for all time untill DX10 wich was a complete rewrite of the code and tech. Long as you have a DX10 card you can run any DX games though 10.1 and 11 games in the future won't be able to show the features your hardware doesn't support. rather than not playing at all. ViperAFK
I would've been very surprised if it turned out to be a 7 exclusive. Yeah, the only friggin reason dx10 is vista only is because it heavily relies and is built for the new driver model in visata, they would have to do a lot of work and possibly redesign XP's driver model or redesign dx 10 to get it to work. Windows 7 uses the same driver model, it will not be windows 7 exclusive. People need to stop spreading misinformation like that. PC gaming for DX10 and beyond is dead until this impasse is dealt with. DX10 won't and can't be backported to XP without changing major parts of the XP driver system. XP is dead and isn't getting major redesigns at this point in it's life span, people have to understand that and move on. revvo
^ XP is dead? Sure it is, on the year 2014 Why move on? If it works, why fix it? I'll let you move on  It requires Vista? I'll skip, I can live with DX9 for a while. Vista failed because so many people were trashing it. So much so, that to this day people are scared about getting a new computer with vista. Its sad really. No. It failed, because.... hmm no I better not go into that, we have enough of those threads already  But, I have to add to your "it's sad really" comment, because it's not sad. Windows M.E., now that was sad! Microsoft just failed to deliver with Vista. It's that simple. Average joes who buy computers at retailers, they don't care. They get whatever OS that is on their computer and they use it. It's the computer "savvyists" (us) who complain because we know there's no compelling reason to upgrade a perfectly stable XP system to Vista. Unless DX11 takes off because DX10 didn't, I don't see any Vista features that would make a gamer upgrade from XP to Vista. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted July 25, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 25, 2008 I use the terminology "dead", because it's no longer the main product, it's only getting security patches and extended support. And of course, DirectX 9 comes with Vista, so it's not like you're losing that if you upgrade. Brandon Live Veteran Posted July 25, 2008 Veteran Share Posted July 25, 2008 Sorry to be a spoil sport but is anyone else starting to think DX11 is just a rebranding of DX10 to try and make it successful? Did you even read the article? They're talking about some pretty huge GPGPU stuff... which will finally be useful as it won't be vendor-specific. If anyone at Microsoft had one bit of sense, DirectSound would be reimplemented to complement XACT, not deprecated, and DX11 backported to XP. PC gaming for DX10 and beyond is dead until this impasse is dealt with. DX10 (and presumably all later versions) cannot be backported to XP. Not without literally turning XP into Vista. So you're basically saying that Microsoft should give away Vista.
